So I basically have to delete my character holding the name and simultaneously rename my PC player while the getting is good.

Your characters should not have been deleted. If they were deleted then contact customer service. Mepps said before that they have never and would never delete characters.

On a side note, do the characters actually show up if you click restore? If not then make sure you're signing in with the exact same PSN ID as you did on the PS3 version. How long were you inactive for?

Correct. You are essentially freeing up the name for anyone (including yourself on the PC) to take when you delete/rename the PS character.
