Wizards are specialists. Mages are not. Do developers say that monks tanking raids is never intended?

Mnk never tank raids over tanks, not sure which world you live in.

No one is arguing pets ought to tank raids over warrior / SK / paladin tanks. However, saying that mages : tanking :: wizards : healing is ridiculous. Wizards have never healed. Mages have always pet tanked. The two are not analogous.

Course, mages : tanking :: monks : tanking also isn't correct, but it's a better analogy than what you gave. Ultimately, mages are unique the same way other classes are unique, and the biggest perk of our class is being able to pet tank content. Every time people about pet tanking, they forget that, and think that mages = caster DPS = wizards, and therefore mages have no just cause for being able to pet tank content.

That's not what mages are. From day 1 of EQ, mage pets have been able to tank content - and yes, at times better than player tanks of the same level - go to a progression server and see for yourself. That's what the class is about.

If it's that obvious and the devs do in fact feel that way, why haven't they stopped it? They certainly have the tools to do so. Could it possibly be that the devs do not share your view that this is bad for the game? Now you could perhaps claim that they don't understand or are inept, but you didn't. In fact you credit them with knowledge of the situation and a certain amount of condescension (by saying they wouldn't bother saying something so obvious).

Most people that box have box chars with a pet. I play on FV. My main is a 85 bst w/4300 aa's / 63k hp / 5.8k ac, I box a 90 shaman, 90 bst, 90 mage, 90 cleric, 90 druid. My mains pet is fully player geared; I save ALL elegant defiant drops & weapons, make sets for every slot, and that goes on my wolf. My box chars pets are fully maged geared with the highest she can summons. When I play I usually play solo. Now & then I get guildies that want to tag along. But most of my guild box's. If it was not for my box chars I would never be able to kill raid mobs because I only raid when I have to. I am not setting my life to revolve around raiding / if I don't show up I don't get a chance to loot something I need so I don't have to buy it. My mains wolf can off-tank if I need him to, thus the reason I keep him fully player geared.

Why should 1 class get a merc and have dps+ tank + healer? I have np with classes being able to solo group content, but you're the only class able to do all 3 things.

This thread has taught me one thing:

    Magicians are overrated.
  9. Tuluvian Elder

Clearly, but you (i know) remember way back when , Pets had no business in raids. People feared they would poof loot.... That has changed, clearly they shouldn't take a spot of the designated classes, as they have become the "dps" tools for mages for raids (as it should be). Instead of a main source for completing certain content, in Raids.

In fact, the major pet classes have quite a few pet-specific AA's for both passive and active skills that improve the ability of the pet to tank or survive. And the entire defensive AA package is quite significant, just as it is for player tanks. The best tanks are backed by lots of AA's....that's true for pet tanks too.
  11. Tuluvian Elder

That is where it becomes a problem. Are they a dps class, tank class? both? If both and it carries into the raid content there's an obvious problem... No other class has that capability outside oh crap temporary fixes that lasts longer then 30s, and no content is designed for those few seconds alone.

Not to the same degree as players tanks do. Take agro as a example pets simply don't have the same agro tools that players have. They make up for that by having a higher base agro along with a relentless application of that higher base agro.
  13. Siddar Augur

If earth pets were tanking every raid then I could see there being a issue but sense they are only useful on certain events as tanks, I don't see a problem with it.
  14. Tuluvian Elder

    T1 they sure can.
  15. Siddar Augur

People are using pets to tank T1?

We considered pet tanking shards but decided it was better to huddle the mob and kill barrels instead.

NToV is claimed to be T1 in difficulty but only one of the named loot dropping mobs there is not a belly caster. So pet tanking there isn't really a option.

My sk with a cleric merc, i can single pull, swap to willsapper to slow mob, and tank it while using dot or lifetaps for dps.

Maybe not as fast a killer as a mage but i can handle harder targets than a mage pet can especially since i can slow if i needed to, and with harmtouch and discs i can take out some harder nameds than i think a mage could handle.

I dont know any anyone would complain about what one class can do, its that mentality and the need for more abilities thats drives players to multibox alts.

The game is more about grouping with other real players, mercs and all the other ways eq has been made easier is just a way to place the game on life support until they finish everquest next.

We have already seen them discontinue service for everquest online adventures, there is no reason to expect everquest to last forever.

The game has only gotten easier over time, part of the reason im feeling the urge to return to the mac server now that its starting to get patch support.

I think mage pets should tank just like a war merc does, and if not that then if theres more than 6 aggroed to a target the enemy should disregard the pet and go for the player highest on the aggro list.

That way mages can keep going solo or group stuff with pet, but larger fights would require a player tank.

It is more like they have a lot of other stuff on their to do list and this item is rather recent, but so far history prove that they re against it (See SS2 debacle).
  18. Tegila Augur

i'd have to really dig as it was pre-forum revamp, but it has been said, by a dev, that pet-tanking raid bosses is not intended and that they needto look into changing how mechanics effect pets. think itwas back in a discussion about SS2

They fixed SS2 did they not?
  20. boukk_sebilis Augur

SS2 fix was just a band aid .
