So, I'm really the wrong guy to do this, but nobody else did. Hopefully, someone who knows level 85 better than me will post. I blew through level 85 during HoT and don't really know/remember what it's like. These are my thoughts interpolated to level 85 from a level 100.

You've selected probably the hardest, most diverse class in EQ.

I almost feel like I'm hurting you pushing my ideas and play style upon you rather than tell you to play with everything and figure it out yourself and your own style as it's entirely possible you could find something(s) that are better for you than my suggestions here. That said, you need to group and you probably need something to get you started so here is (not even) the tip of the tip of the iceberg of knowledge you want.

    Level 85 example spell lineup:

Bark of Tashan - cast this first
    Dominate - Charm
Fragmented Consciousness or Desolate Deeds if you don't have a Shaman and don't have Dreary Deeds AA
    Ensorcelling Wave - AE mez
    Color Conflux - AE stun
Chaotic Befuddling - empowers the next two nukes to twincast
The Downward Spiral - single stun
    Biggest nuke
Dermal Brimstone - my personal quirk YMMV (small, free rune)
    Greater Fetter - Root
    2nd biggest nuke
    Polychaotic Rune

    Level 85 Enchanter buffs:

    Voice of Prescience
    Hastening of Erradien
    Shield of the Void
Ward of Befuddlement - unless there are other pets
    Twincast Aura
    Mana Reiterate or Befuddler's Aura
Learner's Aura sucks and does almost nothing. Use it only when you have lots of melees.

Other spells you should familiarize yourself with:

Compliant Lurch - You would do well to study this spell. It has LOTS of uses. For instance, a Wizard can burn the mob and nobody gets hit.
    Wind of Tashani
    Recant Magic
Illusion: Scaled Wolf - run speed
Boon of the Garou - Attack & Dex buff
Tiny Companion - shrinks your pet
Illusion: High Elf - at least you can look like a proper Enchanter
    Bind Sight
    Gate
    Bind Affinity
Wuggan's spells for Heroic adventure and LDoN traps/chests

Familiarize yourself with all activatable AAs EXCEPT:

Suspend minion - our pet sux, don't waste your time generally
Dire Charm - works on mobs up to level 46

    Thoughts on mercs:

The best way of spending SC is to buy ALL the merc slots.
I suggest grouping, so whatever merc your group wants is what you should have. They're not expensive to swap out even if you don't have the slots so if you don't have extra slots, get your group from PoK and grab whatever merc the group needs.

If you have the slots, I prefer to run the tank merc in my groups if one is needed as you then have the ability to shift it to passive to keep it from breaking mezzes.

If you're soloing, you probably shouldn't have a merc out, so get a healer for buffs and rezzes.

You will need to carry LOTS of Peridots, Tiny Daggers and the thingy for Wuggan's which all stack to 100.

Gear wise, the best stuff is Glowing Reis, but that's true of everyone. There's a clicky thread In this forum. I'll bump it after I post this. The enhanced minion focus does nothing for Enchanters!

Thanks for this! My wife chose to make her Heroic an Enchanter and this is much needed for us.
  4. Haegar Augur

I have a feeling that "heroic" will replace the question if someone E-Bayed his character.
  5. Qest T. Silverclaw Augur

Whether you like it or not, this is the new reality. I think it's better to try to help them play better than to try to shun them so they quit.

If we can help them to the point where they become decent players, they'll be able to group with us and we'll have more fun.

Anyway, there are plenty of other threads with this very discussion. Let's not derail here.

Thanks for compiling a list Qest. A lot of good threads here. If I do say so myself.

Just a quick note. I started a Enchanter YouTube page

Very nice! One quick comment re: "Fragmented Consciousness or Desolate Deeds if you don't have a Shaman and don't have Dreary Deeds AA". Dreary Deeds becomes available at level 86, so a brand new Heroic character won't have it.

my Eq wife was a Chantie !
she knew this crap way better then me
  10. Qest T. Silverclaw Augur

Chanter - one who chants, a.k.a. a shaman
Chantie - I'm not sure, but it might be a brand of diaper for wealthy troll Shamen
Enc - an acceptable way of abbreviating Enchanter
Enchanter - the most powerful and important member of any group.
  11. Conscript Journeyman

The real problem I am seeing for people like me who are returning (and don't know nothing about anything) is:

    1) None of the Heroic quest mobs can be charmed
    2) Our charm doesn't work on anything that is level 85

So just doing your basic Heroic character quest solo which gives you access to the best mercenaries (which everyone should be able to do) is pretty much impossible for an Enchanter.

Enchanter's feel like an out-dated class for a game that longer exists.
  12. Dandin Augur

I am sorry you feel this way, but I found the complete opposite of what you stated to be true.
I soloed the new J5 mercenary line on my Heroic Chanter with a mercenary and the basic AAs and gear that SOE provided.

The truth is, as a 85 heroic chanter, you are at the helm of a character I would have loved to have at that level. Your overgeared for the content that your in. And you have all the AA abilities for the expansion that your in.

All it breaks down to is practice, and accepting when you do make a mistake.
Death happens. For every class. Even more so when you are just soloing, or by yourself with a mercenary.

    Try this.
Tash and root a mob with greater fetter. Charm it.
Pull monsters on top of it and /pet attack it.
    Root them in place
When your pet is at 10% health invis yourself and break charm
    Kill your former charm pet.

    Rinse and repeat.

I understand your frustrations, as ENC are not an easy solo class

But it can be done. With extreme effeciency
  13. Qest T. Silverclaw Augur

I don't understand why someone would proclaim themselves to be among the top two Enchanters anywhere*, who claims the knowledge of the "7 Secret Arts of playing an Enchanter," daughter of the 5th house**, and holder of the sacred chalice of Rixx***, and then suggest someone is wrong for not being able to do what they can do with a heroic level 85 Enchanter.

    * I don't know anyone who actually agrees on this point, least of all me.
** They didn't actually claim this part
*** They didn't actually claim this part, either

Can you list the steps you take to kill the Heroic Mobs that are unable to be charmed and mezzed?
  15. silku Augur

I don't have a heroic slot to test it, but what I'd consider doing is :

    A) rune up
    B) summon shiny bob and give him some pet gear (every little dps helps) or run around the zone till you find a blue you CAN charm and bring him where you are.
    C) pull out a wizard merc and put him on burn
    D) rune that wizard merc
    E) pull one of those weak conning mobs, stun it, tash it, slow it, stun it, and have your pet /wiz merc beating on it and reruning as needed.

You'd still probably have to med a few times before finishing and getting your j5 merc, but you'd do it easily
  16. Conscript Journeyman

So as an Enchanter if I "must" use a mercenary you're suggesting the wizard merc and not a cleric?

And our pet can take a beating?
  17. silku Augur

No, I'm saying in THAT situation, with weak con mobs.. I'd use a wizard merc.
  18. Random_Enchanter Augur

One bit that i would like to add that seems to be commonly left out is the enchater's ability to Stun lock any (level approate) single mob that is stunable. Between our spin stun (Lasts about 7 seconds) and the AOE stun (targeted or PB, lasts 6 seconds) with recast timer there is about a 1/2 second window to alternate the two. When done correctly (less reists) Stun lock ensues with the ability to cast a "jab" line DD in between. When done incorrectly, stuns a mob for about 12 seconds strait then lets mob have one round before another 12 second stun duration lasts.

Edit: I define Jab line as any spell with under a 1.5 sec cast time

One thing about an enchanter is there is no "always do this in all situations" answer to how to play. You must learn all your spells, and all your AAs and all your mercs, and how to use them in any given situation. That will allow you to be very powerful.
  20. Qest T. Silverclaw Augur

Another way would be to set your Journeyman Caster Merc to Main Tank and Burn, then grab a mob with Compliant Lurch to keep it away from the merc.

Or, you could reapply root as needed while you damage it from afar.

There are other methods as well.

The best option is to join a group.
