    Update Dec 24 2023:

Please note that this list only takes the level of priests and mages (AKA "pure casters") into account to determine the spell levels listed here.
The level of the spell caster matters -- the level that hybrid classes (BRD, BST, PAL, RNG, SHD) can buff other players will vary from what is listed here.
    -----

I need help verifying some info regarding player buffs. Specifically, which level ranges spell buffs will and will not land on characters due solely to their level.

    -----
    Buff Level Requirements
Max Spell Level : Character level required to land spell
    50 : 1
    51 : 40
    53 : 41
    55 : 42
    57 : 43
    59 : 44
    61 : 45
    63 : 46
    65 : 47
    93 : 61
    95 : 62
    97 : 63
    99 : 64
    101 : 65
    103 : 66
    105 : 67
    107 : 68
    109 : 69
    111 : 70
    113 : 71
    115 : 72

    119 : 74
    121 : 75
    123 : 76
    125 : 77

I would like to update the list with any needed corrections. Thank you all who have already contributed.

I do not currently have a character on live beyond level 78, so I am not able to verify this info myself.

Bonus: see Fanra's version here, with a clean, easily read format: https://everquest.fanra.info/wiki/Spells,_Songs,_Disciplines,_and_AAs#Buff_level_restrictions

AA buff will land on any level.

As long as that aa is not directly casting an actual spell.

They redid the aa "spells" awhile ago and it caused the aas to lose the "any level" ability. Now they will follow the normal rules for the actual spell, including level restrictions.

The only "interesting" thing is that the aa cast doesn't level check until the aa cast resolves. So you can target an underlevel toon and use the aa unlike the spell (which will immediately tell you the level restriction). It just will not land on the underlevel toon.

So ... your chart is wrong.

It's close. But it's not perfect. I know that a level 61 toon can take up to level 93 buffs. And it kind of moves linearly-ish up from there. But it was not perfectly linear ... at least from my recollection. I also think some of the pre-61 list is off as well, but I don't have toons at every level to double check right now.

I was going to use the upcoming anniversary bonus period to level some toons 1 to 110 and I'll make a list as I level of where the end points are and update you with my findings.

Edit - Yeah, just tested a level 61 toon again. Level 94 Brells would not cast on toon, but level 93 Mana Repercussion would.

Second Edit - Just tested a level 63 toon. 97 single target Certitude would land but 98 Bastion of Vie would not. So two levels up from 61 and you gained 4 levels of spells. So linear-ish, but not straight linear.

This would be greatly appreciated, I look forward to any update you may have, and hope you have fun!

It's not much data but I currently have a level 75 with level 120 buffs on them.

    Edit: Level 119 buffs won't land on a 71.

Found a level 73 toon...level 117 single target Persistence landed, but 118 single target Vie did not. If you extrapolate from the 63 ... it looks like for every level, you gain two levels of spells after 61. Which would make 75 the first level where level 120 buffs would hit ... which is confirmed above.

So maybe you could at least update your 61 through 75+ chart with some level of confidence.

Adding to this... level 113 appears to be the highest for a level 71, which seems to work within your extrapolation. :)

Level 65 toon - highest buff landing is level 101.

Level 60 toon - highest buff landing is level 65.

Updated the OP with what has been posted so far:

    Buff Level Requirements
Spell Level : Target Min. Level
    1-50 : 1
    51 : 40
    52-53 : 41
    54-55 : 42
    56-57 : 43
    58-59 : 44
    60-61 : 45
    62-63 : 46
    64-65 : 47-60
    66-93 : 61
    97 : 63
    101 : 65
    114-115 : 72
    116 -117 : 73
    118-119 : 74
    120 : 75
More research is still needed, but it appears that for every level after 61, you gain two levels of spells. This would make 75 the first level that can receive level 120 buffs.

Assuming the extrapolation is correct, player levels 61+ should be complete as shown below.

The levels from 1-60 has not changed as far as I know, but if you find anything different, do please let me know!

As complete as I can make it so far...
    1-50 : 1
    51 : 40
    52-53 : 41
    54-55 : 42
    56-57 : 43
    58-59 : 44
    60-61 : 45
    62-63 : 46
    64-65 : 47-60
    66-93 : 61
    94-95 : 62
    96-97 : 63
    98-99 : 64
    100-101 : 65
    102-103 : 66
    104-105 : 67
    106-107 : 68
    108-109 : 69
    110-111 : 70
    112-113 : 71
    114-115 : 72
    116 -117 : 73
    118-119 : 74
    120 : 75

Can confirm level 42 characters can take max of level 55 buffs (which is already shown on chart).

    I'm a bit confused.

Using this example, it shows that for a level 41 character, spells have to be either level 52 or lower, or level 53 or lower to land.

So, which is it? Level 52 or 53? Are there some 53 that will land on a level 41 character and some that do not? Or do we just don't know whether it is 52 or 53 and need someone to find out?

Thank you for posting this and I'm trying to get this information into my wiki.
  15. Brickhaus Augur

Believe the OP is just trying to have every level of buffs listed on the left side and the minimum level of character needed to land on the right side. So level 52 buffs require a level 41, and level 53 buffs require a level 41 as well.
  16. Fanra https://everquest.fanra.info

I must not be thinking correctly.

Why not just say for a spell to land on a level 41 character the buff spell level must be 53 or lower? Why mention level 52 at all?
  17. Brickhaus Augur

Depends on how you want to do your list. From the OP's list, I know exactly the minimum level of character for every level of buff without having to do any calculating/filling in the pattern. If you are more concerned about the maximum level of buff a certain level of character can receive, a reconfiguration would probably be in order.

Sorry if the list is not presented clearly.

It has been a work in progress that I have made dozens of updates to since I made the post last night (last night my time).

Brickhaus explained things before I had a chance to reply, but I would like to assure you that I agree with their response and I would have replied in similar fashion.

To understand how I got to the current mess that exists, please see this page and scroll down to the section titled 'Buffing Level Range' and notice the chart?

I've merely been adding to it since I posted it in the OP.

You are correct, we could easily just list it as "spells level 53 and lower will land on level 41 characters.", or something similar to that effect.

It's a work in progress. I'll polish it up when I have some time :)

For my buff bot, I setup spell sets for the various levels:

But still, it's kind of a pain with the inconsistent level requirements. I wish those lower level requirements were streamlined. On a server where the max level is 120, it probably doesn't matter too much if some lowbies get buffed with higher spells. Perhaps they could simplify it so that characters 40 and below could have buffs of max level A, 50 and below could have buffs at max level B, 60 and below could have buffs at level C, and 70 and below could have buffs at level D. Then 70 and above could have any level. Something like that would get rid of the hassle of having to know stuff like level 42 and 43 can have different level buffs.

So this is another way to list the info:

    Buff Level Requirements
Spell Level : Character level required to land spell
    50 : 1
    51 : 40
    52 : 41
    54 : 42
    56 : 43
    58 : 44
    60 : 45
    62 : 46
    64 : 47
    66 : 61
    94 : 62
    96 : 63
    98 : 64
    100 : 65
    102 : 66
    104 : 67
    106 : 68
    108 : 69
    110 : 70
    112 : 71
    114 : 72
    116 : 73
    118 : 74
    120 : 75

This is a lot cleaner way to present the info, but it is not nearly as clear at a glance because there are large level gaps in different places for both character levels and spell levels.

I left the original post to include the ranges for now, because while this alternative way to list the spells is much cleaner, I prefer to include all the info in the original post because there's no guess work required for the viewer. I will try come up with a clearer way for displaying it :D
