Actually, the odds weren't overwhelming at all for the Germans until the US and Russia joined the war. Something like 90% of WWII came down to population, industrial capacity, and logistics. Which is to say, boots, bullets, and the ability to get more of those to the front than your enemy. An occasional clever tactic or brilliant maneuver would turn some individual battles, but the war as a whole was basically a zergfest combined with an arms race.

The easiest and most visible factor in this is population numbers (since, conveniently, population is also a factor in industrial capacity). At the beginning of WWII Germany had the highest population in Europe, second most if you include Russia. This is actually still true today (for a variety of geopolitical reasons, arable land has a lot to do with it).

German population at the beginning of WWII: 69,850,000

    First German conquest: Austria
    Population: 6,650,000 (less than 10% of Germany's)
Result: Capitulated to demands, annexed without a fight. Effective German population now 76,500,000.

    Second German conquest: Czechoslovakia
    Population: 10,400,000 (~1/7 of Germany+Austria)
Result: Czechoslovakia eventually capitulates under pressure from France and Britain (thanks, Chamberlain). Czech tanks pressed into German service because they are superior to current German designs.

    Third German conquest: Poland
Population: 34,849,000 (~50% of German population at this time)
Result: first time Germans actually fight, Poland backstabbed by Russia and overrun on two fronts after about 2 months of fighting. Phony War (aka Sitzkrieg) begins after France botched the Saar offensive.

    Fourth German conquest: Denmark
    Population: 3,795,000
Result: Surrendered in less than a month

    Fifth German conquest: Norway
Population: 2,945,000, supported by England and France
Result: Surrendered after 2 months, when the invasion of France caused England and France to withdraw their support.

Sixth German conquest: Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France (as part of the same offensive)
Combined population: 59,111,000 (first time they were almost even, and then only because they attacked multiple countries at once)
Result: Luxembourg (population 295,000) surrenders almost immediately, Belgium (population 8,387,000) demolishes its bridges in an attempt to stall the Germans, then surrenders after a few days of fighting, the Netherlands (population 8,729,000) surrendered after a week of fighting, France (population 41,700,000) surrendered after a little over a month of fighting.

At no point during Germany's expansion did they fight any nation larger than themselves. The Germans didn't really face "impossible odds" until the US joined the war, and that's when they started losing.

This of course is in the "big picture" view ignoring individual battles "against the odds" that resulted in unlikely victories, which everyone involved in the war had their fair share of.

this had nothing to do with it looking "too german" read the whole post please.

this was supposed to be a "cold weather" helmet. The original concept does not look like its a cold weather helmet.

"too similar" was in reference to the 2 post prior

i've asked everyone participating in playerstudio to come up with unique ideas. Of course we will have some things that remind you of something you've seen before but I'm asking for creativity from PS creators.

I don't think Lore was an issue. Wasn't the main reason for the change was that it was too close to existing art?

I think if somebody can do it right (ie - not be a rip off and matches the aesthetic of PS2) then a WW2 based helmet would be accepted.
  4. VaIhall

Those countries should atleast been able to fought back for a longer time especially France.. And the turning point of the war was Stalingrad.

We got over that 6 pages ago.
This is now a discussion about World War II.
    You're Off-topic. ;)

Not entirely true. The ball bearing bombing campaign for example forced the use of sleeve bearings in place of much more reliable ball bearings. This affected some engines rather significantly, such as the 605 series which powered the bf109k fighters. While technically they were still producing large numbers of engines and fighters, the quality decline due to bombing was significant.

Another more direct example would be the Junkers 222 engine which was supposed to power German heavy bombers as part of the 'bomber b' project. Many aircraft were designed around the availability of this engine, some with the range to reach America. The Junker motor headquarters was bombed, which made further development/production of the engine extremely difficult. It was never really finished before the war ended, forcing the same fate on the many aircraft based on its existence.

It is also possible that the constant bombing of factories and the destruction of the machine tools inside them also contributed to the choice in using a much weaker final drive in the panther tank that used less machining than the much more reliable planetary drives used by other heavy tanks. This weaker final drives breaking down resulted in the losses of many Panther tanks, especially when retreating from the red and allied armies.

You really have no idea what you're talking about.

France used Panthers when the war ended while they got to work rebuilding their military, and had around two divisions worth of them. They hated them. They were mechanical nightmares, had a godawful final drive that broke when it went a total of 150km, had godawful breaks, godawful suspension, godawful turret, and the list just goes on and on. No one liked their jets either btw, the British engine was more efficient.

They destroyed the towers because there was no reason for them to exist. The world didn't exactly intend for the Cold War to happen.

You do realize WW2 proved that armor doesn't mean anything and that you just shot yourself in the foot, right? The Centurion and Leopard only had 100mm thick glacis, the M48 only had 110mm, and the T-54 (And Russian tank) had 120mm, also yes they used RHA just like what WW2-era tanks did. They didn't use "bigger guns", they used what they felt was needed, which ended up just being the L7 105mm, and it stayed like that until the 1980s even though higher velocity guns existed.

You ever notice that they don't, and that they look much more like the American T20 with larger turrets?

    Hahaha.

Actually, Germany was getting rolled in Africa well before Stalingrad. Stalingrad was only the turning point for the Eastern Front. Naturally it would have really sucked for the Western Front if Germany had actually managed to seize Russia's oil, but Germany was already unraveling at that point.
  10. VaIhall

Well after WWII alot of people hates everything thats German even Germans hate Germany (atleast the politicans) Freedom of speech doesn't exist there unless you agree with the politically correct views. And their politics doesn't have the germans best intrests at heart.

This witch hunt for anything thats German is ridiculous. That's probably why people assumed he wouldn't let the helmet get into the game because it looked ''german''..

It's a great looking helmet by the way.
  11. VaIhall

''getting rolled'' in Africa I wouldn't say that, Africa was probably their most succesful theatre of war until the turning point at the battle of el-Alamein.
  12. Lamat

It's not surprising at all that a thread about helmets on Forumside becomes a debate about WW2 technology.
  13. WTSherman

Which is kind of a silly assumption because as I pointed out, it was a US helmet anyway. Overall it looks like my guess was right about the real reason being it was too smooth, and didn't match PS2's "bevels and greebles" art style. (seriously, even VS who are supposed to be "smooth and sleek" have overlapping plates and little carved lines everywhere)

Though if you really want to test it, just wait until right before Veterans' day and submit an identical model as "US M1 commemorative helmet" for the NC, and see if we get it because we're Space 'Murica. :p
  14. Shinrah

Wow, can we just agree that it wasn´t the smartest thing to do to piss the whole world off and have a megalomaniac with a godcomplex as a leader?
Allies and axis forces had decent aswell as bad commanders. Technology advantages shifted back and forth and later in the war the axis forces obviously were at a huge disadvantage since the war was fought on their territory and alot of factories and research facilities were destroyed.
Last but not least I believe most people are pretty darn happy that the Axis forces lost, personally I enjoy my freedom and the reason we can discuss all this here without being persecuted.
  15. Vinakis

Now if only it actually looked better -after- T-Ray had him change the helmet shape, I might get it. As is, it's not visually appealing to me. :p
  16. Canaan

That wasn't the objective for the bombings, which is why the original bomber sorties didn't have escorts.

As long as the aircraft being powered by the lower quality engines could still fight, then the bombings didn't do what they were meant to do. The 222's engine is another thing under the "nothing of value" list. Germany wasn't going to get anything using it up in the air anytime soon, and it wouldn't have made any difference anyway.

The Panther's weak final drive was not due to the bombings (Keep in mind when the Panther was designed), it was due to the Panther's design originally being 30 tons, which was the weight where straight tooth drives worked.
  17. Boildown

Its almost time to, you know, actually play the game of Planetside, but I'll leave with this closing thought, and thanks/congrats for a respectful and interesting thread on a topic that had the potential to get out of hand.

Adolf Hitler (not sure which of those are going to get removed by the forum software) was the worst thing that happened to the German chances to win in WW2. He made terribad decision after terribad decision when it came to his military leadership. For example, his insistence that the newly developed jet engine be placed into fighters instead of the bombers they were initially designed for. Just imagine if Germany had jet bombers in 1943.... would the Allies have even been able to land on Normandy? Another example, going for Stalingrad instead of the oil fields. Another example, not allowing his generals to perform and strategic retreat on the Eastern front, resulting in them being decimated to nearly the last man instead of being a force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the war, perhaps to resume the attack on Stalingrad after the winter.

Eventually the Allies stopped trying to assassinate Adolf because they realized anyone who replaced him would almost certainly make better decisions. He is justly an object of derision in addition to hatred. Good thing for all us non-German-speaking people who weren't in the unfortunate position to have our ancestors in one of the places he initially occupied, that he was in charge and not someone else.
  18. Lamat

Werent the German jets extremely short ranged, like minutes worth of flight time? That's not great for bombing...
  19. JustARandomNobody

The original MAN panther design had planetary gears. The move away from that was based on the lack of gear cutting machine tools which would hamper the high production rates the Panther was intended to achieve.
  20. VaIhall

The allies tried to assasinate Hitler?
and his decisions we're all good up until stalingrad.

edit: ''military decisions'' too avoid angry politically correct people
