First of all, go Q up for any content besides solo and you are asked to "Choose your role" not "Choose your role, or damage"

@damage troll guy, Those 3 dps were garbage. Not impressed.

@ play both your roles guy, I have a geared toon for each of the "4" roles. Why the H-E-double hockey sticks would i respec my dps to Controller when i've got a perfectly good controller toon ready and willing who also needs the marks. That would be cutting my own throat.

Look, no matter what anyone says, dps is a role or "Specialty" class. None of you damage focused support players will ever come close to a true dps. Simalarly, my mental troller while putting out very good damage will never come close to the damage of a real dps.

I thought as a community we had matured past all the sepratism. Guess i was wrong.

Teamwork and sepratism do not mix well.

I didn't say a Controller does more Damage than a DPS - I was showing overall Team Contribution...

My personal take is that a DPS at the very least should have Twice the damage of a Controller from the same power-in. But a good DPS should have at least 5-6times my Damage out when I'm in Controller stance and should beat me when I DPS by about twice my Damage as a DPS .........But that is not the case.

The Damage Role is a role (or the community standard of DPS for short) but just based on how feats were provided it does not seem like it is a "Real" Role - (You have hit level 30 as a Damage Role here is your feat/trophy) It was more of glossed over as every player has the opportunity to play that role with out changing powers.

As for Teamwork - usually teamwork is when "Separate Jobs/groups" come together to accomplish one set goal. Separatism like church separated from State affairs would be the equivalent of Damage Dealers not having Support type moves/trinkets and Support roles not contributing to Damage or assisting with other Support types. (Like Separation of Powers or Checks and Balances with no one Powerset overstepping the boundaries to do someone-else's job.) Separatists groups in DCUO would be Leagues as they are separating themselves out....like Congregationalists. But I understand what you mean by the rift in the community in regards to role.

(Also, I have yet to see a Decent reliable DPS on USPS ......)

Things likes them s make me wish they would take out the score card or make it pop up just after each boss fight most people are worried about the dps damage on the card so they won't do pickups or other things to help the group so that stuff get put off on other roles that have enough to do .

The way you need to be looking at this is Power type & Function. Damage isn't considered a 'role' itself, but more of a 'function'. This is because every single power type supports the damage function, as well as a specialized function. It's the specialized function that makes the power type itself more unique, as these functions can only be emulated by a few other power types with the same specialization.

This in mind, it was always SOEs intention that players understand and play both functions of their power type, but as we know, this isn't the norm for DCUO. People prefer to play damage only, or their specialized function, and too few play both. The devs aim to resolve this issue by introducing armories into the game so people can change their power function while in an instance so the group itself can maintain the balanced composition that's (mostly) required for instance play, and that includes both the PVE aspect and PVP aspect.

This addition was a long time coming and it hopefully encourages people to understand how the game was intended to be played, which of course will settle the loot debacle as people can understand the worth of their functions as a whole, and not continue to see their characters in such limited terms.

    Look forward to it.

If I'm in a league run or the group I'm in specifically says to only roll on the role you are filling, I won't roll on DPS stuff. If I'm pugging and there is no conversation about it I roll need on anything I need, style or otherwise.

I've actually qeued as healer for an alert pug and when I got into it there was another healer. No big deal, not a tough alert so it wasn't an issue. I had way higher resto but if the person wanted to run healer as well I didn't care. This person told me that I was NOT to roll on healer gear. Period. End of story. That gear was his! I rolled on it and got a piece I needed and he went ballistic. It's ridiculous how childish people are. Look, do I get frustrated when I see a piece I need go to someone else? Sure. But it's a game. I'm not going to verbally abuse other players for rolling on things they want/need. It is how the loot system is and you have to accept that other people are going to roll on things you want/need or you will be miserable playing.

Hopefully the upcoming changes stop a lot of the whining. More likely is that people will just whine about the new system. Ah, MMO players, you never disappoint.

DPS is a ROLE. I don't even think I should need to TRY to find an argument to justify that statement. but here goes...

How many times have you seen this? "GLF DPS or TANK for Trigon Prison then GTG." quick interpretation... We already have one damage dealer (DPS), a Controller and a Healer .. we'd like a tack to hold agro but will be perfectly happy with a second DPS to up the damage output and speed through.

Heck I have been on alerts that had 3 DPS and either a healer or a Troll and did absolutely fine. [Allow me to clarify we ARE talker lower level content like T1 and T2 before the bosses become insane and you need specialists to ensure everyone stays alive] But I have even been on 8 man teams built to battle the Siege Bot in Metropolis or the Morrow Bot at Arkham that had as many a 5 DPS and were able to beat down the CR 70+ monsters with little problem.

Sure its the easiest Role to fill on just about anything from a t1 Smallville to a T5 Nexus because no matter what other role you may have everyone is a potential DPSer. But no matter what Customer Service says having a GOOD Dps or two on a team can make life a whole lot simpler.

Now answer a few quick questions..

Does DPS have its own set of armor specifically designed to increase a players ability to perform DPS tasks? YES

Does almost every power list the effects a player can expect to get from using it in Damage mode (ie DPS)? YES

Are there specific trinkets that enhance Might or Precision both of which determine how much damage ANY role will do including DPS? YES

I'm sorry but all that sure makes it sound a lot like a specific role to me. ;) lol And last but not least when was the last time you ever saw anyone HEAL Circe to death? Never? yeah well then guess what DPS is a role just like the other 3.

i think the problem as it pertains to the op doesn't exist anymore since we all now receive individual loot.

the way i see it while dps is a role it is not a class. your class is your power set: controller, tank or healer.

gear was never intended to be distributed by role. it was distributed according to power with everyone being able to get dps gear.

even if you've been a mental dps since beta and have never controlled a day in your life you are still a controller.

Usually when a style only drops in dps role is either because its Iconic or a rare style. SO need on it if you want.

Yes, if that's all the one character does Just my opinion and if you have multiple toons then I should need to explain how beneficial it is to carry your role gear and be able to play it.

Not sure why you took offense if you actually play a role.

Those who just DPS (and dont' have multiple toons, just DPS), in general have little to no understanding of power usage and regen an how a controller is meant to supplement, or that a controller has more mouths to fees then his/hers, typically don't understand the benefits of letting a tank round everything up before unloading, or how going melee on 20 adds affects the healer and how that affects troll with affects the tank.

I don't begrudge anyone wanting to DPS but if that's is all you are you really have no context for how you play affects other roles becuase all your doing and all you have done is run around and push buttons expecting others to keep you powered, your health up, and keep everything off you.

So yes, just a damager, expendable. If rather have a DPS who knows a role chances are he's better at his good and at the very least understanding how he affect the rest of the raid group other than just killing stuff

    This ^^

DPS is generally classed as Off Role except for the good dps who make it a role in its own right, as for the loot there's no such thing as ninja looting, if you can need and you do actually need it then people do in pugs...in group of friends its generally sorted out separately.
  14. DarkThorn Dedicated Player

Funny, because I've heard of healer, controller, tank as being considered the 'off role'- especially since we all start out as DPS. Makes me wonder about those who talk about DPSers as simply button mashers... how experienced are YOU at DPSing? A DPS's job is solely for damage and this makes DPS expendable? Well, if you want to take forever to get through content because of the much less damage output, sure. But unless a DPS has a secondary role as Controller, how would they understand how a controller works? Or if their secondary role is Healer, how would they know how things impact healing, same with tanking.

Some seem to think that because someone runs healer, controller or tank that they are good at it... but many times they're not. Yes, many times the DPS is just spamming power, which is NOT good either. People simply need to learn their role, whatever role that may be, and learn how it interacts with the other roles. They also need to make their toon the best it can be by investing in SPs and mods- how many times have I seen healers or controllers with NO mods in T5!! Then wonder why they're not effective. So let's not jump on the "DPS is the problem child" bus and worry more about improving your own skills.

Of course not all support role players are great at their role, stands to reason as the levelling mainly teaches the DPS off role not the specialist one. I myself have dabbled in DPS before and know about the % powers and clipping etc, enough to get above average on the board but prefer the support roles...even troll again after the change hopefully.

There is a reason that everyone can be a DPS at the push of a button but not everyone can be all support roles and that is unfortunately it is easier to DPS than anything else, to be a great DPS is hard, of course it is, the ones I run with have put in the time learning the clip combos and power cycles etc, but that doesn't detract from the fact that anyone can be an effective DPS with little effort.

Top end high scoring DPS is a role, below that is off role.

lol, this again? In my youth, DAMAGE was a role on RPGs. That's all I know. (RPGs were board games then!)
