Joel McHale to play Starman in DC Universe’s Stargirl series

Joel McHale (Comunity) has joined DC Universe’s upcoming Stargirl series as Sylvester Pemberton, a.k.a Starman, Variety has confirmed. McHale will star alongside lead Brec Bessinger (School of Rock), Anjelika Washington (Shameless), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul).

A courageous and confident superhero, Starman is a member of the Justice Society of America. He wields a mysterious anti-gravity weapon called the cosmic staff and has a longtime sidekick named Stripesy, who is better known as Courtney Whitmore’s stepfather, Pat Dugan. The role, described as “Golden Age Starman,” will be a recurring one for McHale, who recently starred in the comedy movie The Happytime Murders. His previous TV credits include Community, The X-Files, Milo Murphy’s Law, and Santa Clarita Diet.

Stargirl will follow the story of Courtney Whitmore (Bassinger) who is a smart, athletic and above all else kind girl. This high school teenager’s seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. “Borrowing” the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.

Character creator Geoff Johns will write and produce the series through his Mad Ghost Productions banner alongside Greg Berlanti and Berlanti Productions. This series is not to be confused with Disney’s forthcoming Stargirl, based on the young adult novels from Jerry Spinelli first published in 2000.

Brian Stapf Joins DC Universe’s Stargirl as Wildcat

The cast of DC Universe’s upcoming Stargirl series continues to take shape. Hot on the heels of today’s announcement that Lou Ferrigno Jr. will play Hourman on the show, TV Insider has confirmed that Brian Stapf is joining the series as well. Stapf, a veteran of The Walking Dead and The Purge, will portray the DC Comics superhero Wildcat in what’s described as a recurring role.

Wildcat first appeared in 1942 as the alter-ego of Ted Grant, a professional heavyweight boxer. He was initially given the nickname “WIldcat” due to the impressive agility he displayed in the ring. After an encounter with a young boy who was robbed of his Green Lantern comic, Grant was inspired to put on his own cat-themed costume. He later became a member of the Justice Society of America. As his name suggests, Wildcat has nine lives as the result of a magic spell. This spell also allowed him to age at a slower rate and gave him enhanced vision. His propensity for boxing has also led him to train Batman, Black Canary, and even Superman in hand-to-hand combat.

Ted Grant previously appeared in live-action during the third season of Arrow. Actor J.R. Ramirez’s take on the character ran the Wildcat Gym and trained Laurel Lance for her fight against Nyssa al Ghul. Before the series, he was a vigilante in the Glades until his protégé, Isaac Stanzler, beat a criminal to death. Grant has also shown up in animated form on Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Young Justice.

Haunting of Hill House’s Henry Thomas Joins Stargirl as Dr. Mid-Nite

DC Universe’s Stargirl has added another member of the Justice Society of America. According to Entertainment Weekly, House on Haunted Hill star Henry Thomas will be joining the series as Doctor Mid-nite. Thomas is best known for his role in Steven Spielberg’s ET. His other credits include Better Things, Sons of Liberty, and the adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game.

In DC’s comic book universe, Dr. Mid-Nite was the alter ego of Doctor Charles McNider. He was once a mild mannered physician who was attacked by a mobsters. Their assault left McNider blinded, and his medical career was seemingly over. However, he was inspired when an owl flew into his room, and he realized that he could see in perfect darkness. He went on to develop a special visor that let him see, as well as other crime fighting equipment. McNider even adopted the owl and made it his sidekick.

The Stargirl series has already cast Brian Stapf as golden-age hero Wildcat. He’s joined by Lou Ferrigno Jr. as Hourman and Joe McHale as Starman.

Stargirl is produced by Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter. The series centers around Courtney Whitmore, a teenage girl who relocates to Nebraska where she discovers that her stepfather is a retired superhero.

So some troubling news from the Hollywood Reporter, the planned Swamp Thing series has been reduced to 10 episodes instead of the planned 13 due to a decision of DC Universe parent company WarnerMedia, who is plotting a larger direct-to-consumer streaming platform. This new service, expected to launch in the fourth quarter, will feature scripted originals, as well as content from corporate siblings HBO, Turner's TBS and TNT, among others. The platform will be overseen by former NBC Entertainment president Bob Greenblatt and Turner's Kevin Reilly as WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey makes the streaming effort a top goal for the company.

For the time being, DC Universe will continue as business as usual, which recently expanded its availability to Xbox users
