What do new players have as AA options?

As noted, Basilisks work well against most planes although they have trouble hitting things at long range, especially ESFs.

Really, if you want to deal with planes, get a Walker. They're also pretty good at killing everything else that isn't right next to you, although Sundies have a higher profile so do worse in that regard (enemies need to be further away).
