So I went with thermal and haven't been disappointed yet. The range it works at doesn't bother me. It helps me spot infiltrators on the tops and sides of nearby mountains if I'm defending the edge of a base, and I'm decent at picking them off with the FPC. I'll need to grind certs to get where I'm really comfortable, like reload time and extra ammo, but it'll come in time.
