I've been trying to get better at flying, but for Air targets which one is better now? Rotaries seem to kill Libs and Valkries faster, but other ESFs slower. This is just from VR testing.
my understanding is: rotaries require that you get closer to the target to get full hits, but have faster DPS defaults can be used from afar but have more sustainable DPS. they also let you better gauge drop and leading. most air aces i spot nowadays run the default i may be wrong
My personal preference as TR is that the Rotary is sub-par and the best all around dogfighting gun would have to be the needler. The same goes for the VS. Some people like the rotary, but most stick with the Needler. If you are NC, however, your Vortek Rotary can one clip ESFs with good accuracy and an upgraded clip. Too bad the reaver is bulky and easy to hit Also, I see a disturbing amount of NC running around fighting air targets with their AI weapon :S It's very odd!
It highly depends on whether you can hit enemy ESFs consistently in a dogfight/chase scenario or not. The rotary does more damage per shot in exchange for slower velocity, a small mag and less overall ammo capacity. For me as a novice pilot it does the trick because I'm struggling with consistent aim in ESFs. So I'm trying to get up close and personal and deal a lot of burst damage with the rotary instead. The default nosegun deals a lot less damage per shot, but comes with faster velocity which makes leading a bit easier, a significantly larger magazine and more ammo right out of the box. The thing is that it requires you to score a lot more hits in order to down an enemy ESF which can be tough especially if your opponent is good at dodging your shots. If you're lucky enough to actually have the consistent aim required for the default nosegun there's basically no reason to take the rotary.
