Planetside 2 MLG/e-sports

Does it even still exist or was it dropped?

They use MLG for promotion nothing more.

Any esports will be home grown from within the community. With the exception of lurperza SOE has no appetite for the format, little or no support to be taken seriously (lurperza does her best but SOE just are not putting the support needed in place)

That's really to bad I feel this game really adds a unique twist since it takes a squad / platoon/ outfit to really be a dominating force.

WDS felt like it added more hate between factions than anything else. Wish they would make an outfit tournament or something that would add a competitive side.

The community clash series has a large amount of potential, having watched some matches and participated in my own outfits preseason match and the all star match it is well run and great to watch with the right casters.

But even with all the effort from lurperza and the comm clash guys there is resistance and a lack of support fro the heads in charge of the game. The lack of proper observer cam views like first person, multiple camera angles with interactivity. What would seem like simple things like the players being able to compete with their own names (this is a royal pain in the *** for highly organised outfits, access to practice (i understand they don't want to distract from the main game population but people already try to use the test server and just get trolled).

Ps2 pickup scrim has continued to grow via reddit too.

    Highly recommend this match:
    Part1
    Part2
    Part3

From what I'd heard, and my understanding of it, is that the deal with MLG was renegotiated so that they are no longer obligated to support a ladder system featuring teams of 48 v 48. Not sure what, if anything, is officially taking it's place.

There are of course the grass roots community things though.

MLG at this point is nothing more than promotion. Honestly doubt MLG and PS2 stay together much longer.

Also the e-sports aspect of PS2 isn't here yet either. To me an e-sport is a game that you play to make money at. PS2 is not that and honestly I don't see it becoming that kind of game. It might someday grow to become a game that could make some money but I don't see how it could ever compete vs games like SC/LoL, CS, or even Battlefield for that matter. It is not a game that is built for that type of environment at least not yet.

However there is still a competitive side to Planetside. There are still outfits out there gearing towards a form of competitive play. There are also tournaments like Community Clash and the PAL that, if they go over well, will be the true first stab at building a competitive atmosphere in the game. But they are not MLG and they are no where near e-sport level of competition(in which I mean players being paid or rewarded for the competition).

The biggest problem to competitive play in planetside is that the game does not give a suitable place to practice and participate in these types of competition(although using the Jaeger server was/is/will be extremely helpful to the competition side of things). Hopefully within the next year they might be able to do something more to help with competition but until then the community has to use what they have to practice and compete.

Im not sure how you would include some sort of organized play.
Right now battles are a mockery of "Competitive" gameplay.

I don't think Planetside 2 is any kind of good fight for MLG and professional gaming. By its nature, it's a game that plays best and shows itself most fully when you see platoons fighting. Unfortunately, that means the pots you see in most games wouldn't be worth it for those 48 people to play at an event in LA or Las Vegas, let alone enough money to let them make a living as PS2 players. "A 10,000 dollar pot? We each get...two hundred dollars...? That won't even cover the plane ticket here."

That said, organized events, like the Community Clash, are an awesome form of engagement. I think it helps to energize the community of players and those fights of platoons does reveal this game at its best. That's especially true because it looks like a lot of players, from single individuals like ItzMurda, to outfits, are recording and releasing footage, and they may be the best ambassadors for this game. So I think SOE should throw in more support behind this level of organization, at least. Forget MLG, but help community members who want to show off how squads and platoons fight.

Wish they would make an outfit tournament or something that would add a competitive side.

Planetside had an Outfit War years ago. It was fun...

Yeah, Planetside 2 is not a competitive game at all with the hit detection, netcode, numerous bugs that at some times can be gamebreaking (at least for playstyles). But 48-48 community combat is where it will shine, because unlike 5v5 the netcode/other issues will not be as apparent. Of course, there can't be a prize pool in place like Counterstrike, but like in Planetside 1 I think outfit battles with rivalries etc make the game interesting and fun to play.

Aslong as this game has Reflex Sights(or sights in general) that aren't properly done this game will never be MLG.

in my opinion (and obviously doesn't apply to everyone) I feel they addressed a good chunck of bugs. Granted there are still some. But you are right the prize pool makes no sense at 48 vs 48. I am sure there could be something even a unique in-game item is better then nothing.

I just remember this being brought up in the summer and looked awesome.

I'll have to check out community clash seems like fun.

Those Mercs sure use some fine tactics!

If you like how they play but you are TR on Miller (so you can't join them), then you should look at Malevolents of Xibalba (MoX), we play very similar (tight squads, tactical smoke usage, spec ops style) but slightly smaller scale. With a few recruits, I'm sure we can give them a run for their money.

Wait wait wait. I play this and then I play Battlefield 4. When I see how Terrible the netcode is on Battlefield 4 Planetside 2 seems godly. I just never have issues with planetsides netcode or its jsut VERY hidden unlike BF4

You cannot make an E-sport out of this game. Its impossible and is just how it is due to its design. Look at any other esport game and/or sports in real life. Clear-cut rules, small teams, winning conditions, objectives, balanced teams, etc. This game can't ever be an esport due the sheer ****-storm that happens each day in massive fights. It ceases being a sport and becomes a glorified team death-match.

They need to drop the esport idea and just deal with it. SOE continues to bark up the wrong tree with every update in this game. Sad they aren't able to learn from their mistakes and listen to the community.

Wtb continent locking a year later. Derp.

    It will never happen.

No one is going to watch MAX/ENG/MED spam. Huge changes to the game need to happen for this game to go up in E-sports

The only way Planetside could be interesting to watch would be for the viewer to have a complete view of where every player is, and be able to go to a first-person view of any player on any team. It would help to be tied in to that player's comms as well. But that still wouldn't be enough for <=24v24, since those fights are all infantry zergs anyway.

Watch a tank team flank the enemy on the map, then switch to their perspective as they try to take down a critical enemy Sunderer. See a Liberator arrive on station and switch to the gunner's Thermal view to see him smite his foes. An infiltrator slips past an enemy force and you switch to his view as he mows down the engineers and medics that are supporting that flank.

THAT, in a 48v48 match would have made Planetside watchable.

Further, I believe that the idea of MLG served to promote skill-based balancing which is already missed with the addition of more and more lock-on and spam weapons.

But the problem remains that the game doesn't spectate well, and squad cohesion isn't high enough to actually add spectator value. Even assuming we had better spectator tools (that includes a better observer system, easier to read map/mini map tracking, and sane tournament rules), the game play is too chaotic and the game flow too wild to support a good show.

It makes for a great gameplay experience, but the number of things going on, all of which are hard to identify at a glance, makes things difficult on the audience. They need something to focus on, like a Flag in CTF, but nothing in PS2 game play can accomplish that effect at the moment. So instead, we've had to rely on the shock and awe of the scale, but have no good way of breaking it down to a squad or something we can root for.

I mean, imagine an escort style objective added to the capture mechanics. The troops would be able to rally around it, just like the audience would.
