Why do you play PlanetSide2?

It's about skiing, not jet packs. I've tried it out a year ago, and found unappealing.

I don't agree. But the gunplay is what made me leave and issues with Hirez spyware is what makes me not want to go back. It was worth it to spend over 100 hours there.

Guessing Titanfall is next jetpack game for you?
  4. Iridar51

Maybe. In my experience, it doesn't pay off to overhype an unreleased game.

I am that kind of person that often returns to games, films and books I've enjoyed in the past, and PlanetSide 2 is no exception. I've played it over a year, so even if titanfall will be worth its hype (I'm cautious towards PC + console FPS releases), nostalgia will periodically bring me back to PlanetSide, unless it turns to complete crap. For now devs are doing an admirable job for such an incompetent bunch.

Titan fall will be very "small" in terms of actual Players, but will be filled up with AI opponents, I would say it's similar to how creep in Arena/Dota-style games work, since you will get your "Titan"(stompy stompy mech) through kills. And the developers of said game do this deliberately, because they think this is their vision, they experimented with different sizes/concepts and came to this conclusion.

Now why bring this up? Well PlanetSide 2, from my personal opinion has no vision. The goal of this entire thread is to find out were the community stands. And so far the opinions are very mixed.

Everybody has a different expectation and perception of how the game runs or should run. There are those that want combined arms, there are those that probably want all the Vehicles gone. There are those that find this game unique, while I personally find it actually very generic and just a scale up of BF3 with the option that everybody can spawn his own Vehicle all the time and thus Vehicle Combat and Infantry Combat alike suffer for this very notion.

You could say that I want PlanetSide 2 to realize it's potential. My own personal view/vision of said potential is something between the Battlefield Franchise and the ARMA Franchise, both of which fill a very different end of a very wide spectrum. A more open and easier to enter combined arms experience mixed the fact that this game has a persistent world.

How could this actually very unique and I think to many appealing concept not be explored further? Another thing is actually the ESF flight model, SOE definitely planed for ESFs to be more like Aircraft with VTOL, similar to how those work in games like BF2 and up. But by accident created this very unique and actually awesome fact of to high burst thrust which allows for hover duels on the stand. No other game actually has this and Pilots seem to enjoy this.

So why not expand on this rather unique things further to stand out from the crowd of other games other than the scale? Because frankly, the design of the game encourages Farmfests of spawn rooms instead of actual battles, something that other games tackle a lot better.

But in contrary, if so many people are actually happy with the current approach, why change it at all? Though the current state actually doesn't really line up with what is promised on the official homepage. Because reading into things, the majority seem to want more Biolabs of anything else ... and a safe way to said Biolabs.

Which is why I specified combined arms as a theme so much, yet actually the minority wants that, despite it being advertised on the homepage. I'm starting to think PlanetSide 2 will become less and less the game for me, despite being invested into it since tech test ...

The market will slowly start realizing that there actually is a hole in combined arms. Why else would things like Renegade-X, Project Reality and the likes exist? I think SOE right now is in the best spot to fill that hole before it even get's big ...

Because every other MMO is more irritating than this one.

A game where I can throw hours upon hours without completion, yet also multiplayer, quick pacing and fun concepts. Consider me sold.

300m headshots, big maps and intense large battles that last for hours. Character progression system, customisable weapons, angry tells from victims. The fact that I can come home from work at night, log into us server(im lithuanian), press instant action button and get into fights full of people straight away.

I stopped playing, because of autos.

  11. DevDevBooday

For me, the community, formed some good friendships in my outfit and its great having fun and kicking filthy blues.
  12. Degenatron

I play it because it's amazing and ridiculously fun. Where other games build a scripted sequence, this game has real players doing amazing things.

Look up and see 10+ Galaxies flying over with a huge amount of fighters flying escort.
Run over a hill ans see 50 other players all around moving with you to the next base.
Seeing a line of tank on a ridge shelling an area.
Having a scythe make a strafing run at my tank, but it exploding 20 meters away, debris showers all around, and a reaver cuts through the fireball above.
Watching as three galaxies approach and hover above the biodome, three squad drop out, set up spawn beacons, and begin to scale down the dome to begin their assault on those of us waiting inside.
Tracer fire from a hundred infantry lighting up the undersides of the legs of a tech plant at night.

There simply is no other game that rivals this one.

I love it because I play with a great outfit/group of friends in DPSO. I love it because this game makes every other FPS feel so tiny. I love the combined arms aspect. While it has its flaws I still love it at heart.
  15. Posse

Because I like its gameplay much more than any other FPS I've played, also, it's definitely not newbie friendly which is good, I'm tired of games holding your hand, both single player and multiplayer (a terrible trend that games are following in the last years), I stopped playing Call of Duty when they implemented "deathstreaks" in Modern Warfare 2 that gave you rewards for being bad (like the HP bonus for dying 4times in a row)

I honestly love planetside2 for the player generated content. I got really bored of dungeon raids and PvE because it's just following a pattern over and over again. While in planetside2 battles change every time. Also hover tanks with lasers and now i'm really loving vortex max.
The only other mmo that held my attention was warhammer online: the age of reckoning for the Realm vs. Realm combat. But i eventually left that game because the class and gear balancing went downhill.
  17. bPostal

I really only continue to play because of the friends that I've made in my outfit over the last few years.
That and sometimes I have fun!
  18. Tobax

My main reasons would probably be:

Played PS1 for 6 years so naturally PS2 was an instant draw.
Years of players with my outfit mates and always enjoy my time with them.
The fact it's probably the only MMO FPS and has such a huge scale to other FPS games you'll play.

Metagame... well lets be honest it lacks that but if it ever gets any like PS1 had (intercontinental lattice) then that would become another reason as the war would move around the world and have a purpose instead of just death matches on very large maps.

  19. FormSign

I've always been very goal oriented and I love chasing auraxium medals and improving my skill with every weapon. If I can play a game and have no idea what to do from the beginning, I know it will be good. PS 2 was that way for me. I played planetside 1 also, so I thought I would at least be semi good already. not the case. So please keep that balance between new-player friendly and meaningful skill progression. If you're not up for a challenge then planetside is not for you (which is a good thing!!)

I play because it is a great game.

I continue to play because __________ that ruined the game isn't bad enough to stop playing yet.

I no longer pay to play any of soe's games because of their unwillingness to stop the not so obvious _________ in this game.
