Game crashes repeatedly

I get this exact same error, and man is it FRUSTRATING. I'm to the point of quiting EQ2 for a few weeks until they fix this crap. The game was working perfectly fine up until the Oct. 12th patch that hosed everything.
I get the crash about every 15-20 minutes, and lucky me it always seems to happen during something important (i.e. during a battle or during a Rush Order crafting writ).
I'll give the "set graphics to Extreme Performance" solution a try and see if it works, but I gotta tell you - it's not looking too promising right now.

Same error, when adding char to zone the game crashes. I can´t go to the select char screen. This is happenning since today patch, this morning I was playing without problems..
    Here is the log.

So I decided to spend the time and contact SOE Technical Support directly by phone... man what a dissappointment that was. The first agent I talked to was sure that it was a connection issue, and had me check to make sure my ports were forwarded correctly. All that was fine, but the error was still there.
The second agent I talked to (when I called back) told me it must be my ISP messing up, and he told me to give them a call. Yeah, right. Issues I have with the whole "it must be your connection":

    1. If my connection through my ISP was really the problem, then please explain to me why EQ2 worked perfectly fine up until the most recent patch (I believe it was on Oct. 12th). If my ISP connection has not changed, then how can it all of the sudden be causing this issue? I don't think it is a coincidence that the issue started happening on the same day as the most recent patch.

    2. If this was an issue with my connection "dead-ending" and not being able to connect - then why is it that I can connect to and play the game in the first place? I can play the game just fine, but it just randomly crashes. It would be one thing if it crashed while zoning or while doing a specific action, but this error is popping up for almost anything. I could be sitting in a city zone and crafting for 15 minutes, and then the game just randomly crashes. I could be fighting in a totally different zone, and mid-combat the game will sometimes randomly crash. Doesn't sound like my connection is the problem there.

    3. If this is a connection issue, then why does the error code "Unhandled exception EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" show up on the eq2 crash log? That is a coding issue, not a connection issue.

    4. Other people besides me are having this exact same issue. Given that I'm sure not every EQ2 player is going through my ISP from my area, I highly doubt that the exact same problem occurring with multiple users is all due to my ISP.

    5. On some posts here on the EQ2 forums, there has been a mention from devs/admins that there might soon be a hotfix to correct this issue. Really, so how is your hotfix going to fix my supposed ISP problem? That leads me to believe that this problem is indeed a coding issue, not a connection issue.

Sounds more like that the agent didn't know how to fix this bug within your game, so he is "passing the buck" on to my ISP as if they could do anything about it. I asked to speak to a supervisor and the agent just told me that the supervisor wasn't available.
    Woot.

The tech support guys don't have any insight or capability into game-code problems like this. I'm sure he was just trying everything he could think of within his ability to help.
This crash is definitely a code problem so unfortunately calling tech support won't help. We are looking into the logs and trying to sort it out. Hopefully we'll have it fixed and patched soon.

Well my dealings with the email tech support isnt going much better.
I am now being told that this is a laptop issue on my end.. where i ran it fine till.. oh.. guess when.. october 12th.
I guess our ISP's, laptops, XP SP3 all just decided to not work with EQ2 on the same day?
  6. ARCHIVED-Slingsun Guest

Thanks for the reply Rothgar, I to tried most of the "Fixes" and decided to go hands off after seeing that several people are showing the same exception error in thier logs.
Back in the "day" when this board would receive 2k posts a day the number of people posting this issue would have been huge. With the recent posting levels on this board currently being only 2-3 new threads a day with under 50 total posts a day, this issue may seem isolated to only one or two people.
However i would argue from my discussions in guild chat that almost no one even bothers going to the boards anymore. One of my guildies stated that he had the same issue but that he would play extended since it ran until a patch happened to fix it.
Extended does run fine for me also, but i can’t bring myself to waste my time there.
  7. ARCHIVED-Asgrell Guest

    Agreed, thanks Rothgar.
Its good to get atleast a bit of feedback on the issue, even if there isnt a fix as of yet. As it truely sucks not being able to play for almost a week and a half.
I hate to be bossy sounding, but is there any guess as to an ETA on the issue?
  8. ARCHIVED-Oh Cant I Guest

From other posts here, perhaps the problem is a combination of using XP and ATI video cards? My daughter is also running XP but with an Nvidia card and is not having the same issues.
As for not being able to play a character after EQ2 crashes while doing so, I am able to play them on the XP machine again if I use the laptop, running Windows 7, and move them to another locale.
  9. ARCHIVED-Piegasso Guest

Still with the problem, only happens in Windows XP. I renamed every .ini file to .ini.back, I am using standard UI. I change the volume to 0.
When I reach the "adding character to zone" window the game crashes.
I don't know what else to do to get this game working. What did you do in the 21st update?, I was playing without problems that morning.
Here is the last crash log report.

Looking for a solution and reading older posts I renamed the "exp03_rgn_loping_plains_sg.vpk" and "exp03_rgn_loping_plains.vpk" (under packs folder, the updated in the 21st patch) to a . back and I let the game to update vie launch pad.
    Now my game is working.
    Hope this helps to someone.

Wow Rothgar, you are my new favorite Admin! I'm very glad to see a rep who understands the issue and can provide useful information. You just saved me a lot of time talking to SOE IT Support. :)
I very much appreciate you guys looking into it. EQ2 is such a great game, I would hate to stop playing simply because of a glitch.

I have the same issues, always patching 4.3 megas before playing eq2

    :(

Exact same problem and exact same thing is happening to me (doing same 4.3mb patch). I am XP user but I have Nvidia card.

I played game on launch and quit before first free month was up. Then just came did free to play decided to make a return. Enjoyed about 3 good days of gaming then they did the patch. Now I am dealing with what everyone else is dealing with.

Oh well when they released Vanguard I paid 50 bucks on release day and took just couple hours to figure out that I had gotten robbed (literally, they had no business releasing that game and should offered refunds). Now just threw down the money for sentinels fate and a month subscription for unplayable game. So I guess they got me for another 55.

This my friends is why they are having another round of server merges.

Edit: btw since its been almost a week since it was officially posted it was problem in the coding not the user you think maybe we could get an update on when/if it will be fixed?

this is still going on, getting beyond frustrated with it. i can either not log on at all (freezes at the 44% loading zone), or if i do get on, can play between 10-20min before crashing again. and it freezes, my hard drive starts grinding, and i have to totally restart the computer. cant even ALT-F4, or CONT-ALT-DEL, have to reset the computer completely and go thru the whole "windows was shut down unexpectently" deal.
i have WIN XP PRO svpack 3, and ever since last major patch this has been going on. It's been what 3 weeks now? i have been valiently trying to play, and continue my liking of this game, but EQ is making it *SO* difficult...
i have deleted all custom uis, i have reinstalled game, i have reinstalled drivers, i have even sacrificed one of my cats to innoruck... (dont tell the wife, told her the cat was just hiding) nothing is working.
PLEASE figure out what is going on and fix it
  15. ARCHIVED-Elric Guest

Yeah I'm hoping they fix this soon... I'm wasting money paying for a game I can't even play.
  16. ARCHIVED-Elric Guest

    <chirping crickets>
Has anyone come up with any solutions, or heard anything new about this issue lately? I haven't heard anything, and every "solution" I've tried has been a waste of time. The crashing issues seem to be getting worse rather than better.

    Anyone?

Nothing new to report on our end. We don't have an in-house repro for this problem and it doesn't appear to be affecting that many people. My guess is that its something system, driver or software related because it doesn't happen to most players. Obviously there's a problem and we're looking into it, but I don't have an ETA.
If any of you experiencing this problem has another PC that they can try with your account, let me know if the problem persists on both machines. Also, if you're willing to reinstall, please try another version of the patcher, just to eliminate one variable. If you're using the streaming client now, try installing the blue Station Launcher to see if that resolves the issue. If you're using the default patcher, try making a new installation using the streaming client.
Also, make sure you're running the patcher as an administrator and be sure that your video drivers are updated.
If you'd like to post the first page of a DxDiag, that might be helpful too.

really? this is it? this is the only answer in 2 weeks of multiple people posting the same issues?
    ...
this is the same reason i left vanguard... and eq1.... sony runs too many games and thus is spread too thin to fully support them...

all you people that diss WOW all day over and over... well one thing WOW has over EQ2 (or any sony game) is SUPPORT. something that i have not seen in any sony games since VI sold eq1. so frustrating.

As a side note, I have tried different drivers.
I have tried deleting the asset cache folder and making it repatch.
I have tried reinstalling the game.
I can't use the Sony Patcher as I am playing currently on the Freeport server, which is EQ2 Extended (gold member). Yes, I know EQ2X has its own forums, but I gotta be honest - it definitely seems like there is even less admin/dev attention there than on these forums. For that matter, this problem occurs for people both on normal EQ2 and EQ2 Extended.
