The elevator gives you time to search on the internet and smash things in the near vicinity when you realize that no matter how perfectly you did it, you still somehow borked your flagging.
Back in the day you could fall to your death through the elevator floor if you had sub-optimal video card/bandwidth.
ALT Tabbing used to be a sure way to lag out EQ and cause you to drop through the floor of the elevator from where you would proceed to the ground ... and your bindpoint.
