I was doing the task on my 84 SK. All went fine until the haunting spectre who was able to land a Fear spell on my SK while my pet, DS and DoT were finishing it. After the spectre died and the Fear had faded, I got a Globe of Fear loot but didn't get the Broken Key Bitting of Sand on my cursor and was therefore unable to complete the task.
Thats unfortunately normal for fear/charm, it makes your character LD which is technically no longer in world, thus not getting credit for the kill. The key shards are dropped as loot not on cursor.
Ah you're right, they're loot. Well I got the Globe of Fear (it was on Always Greed) but somehow no key part.
