I've tried every combo imaginable. I had good results with a SK/mage and SK/Monk duo. I actually preferred the SK/Monk duo. Pulling and great damage. This allowed the SK to go two hand. Usually ran with clr merc and dps merc. Sometimes two clr mercs. DPS mercs are nice when they aren't getting themselves killed. Of course, that's my playstyle. I really think it comes down to what makes the game enjoyable for you. A lot of people love having a bard/shm/enc. I'd rather have dps and just grab my buffs in the guild lobby.
