Using /pet inventory check, it appears that the left ear, wrist, and finger cannot be overwritten with more desirable equipment. If destroyed using the relevant /pet inventory destroy command for the slot, the pet would rather have these slots remain empty than accept another item to fill them. I've only tested this on a Mage, but imagine it's the same for other classes.
