What TV buying was like when I was growing up in the 1970's...



The Washington Post: "During the 1974 recession, the lowest-priced 19-inch TV...was about $250."

In today's money that would be $1,500. What type of television can you get for $1,500 today?

This was considered a status symbol long before the iPhone...

I picked up the Blu ray box set of the TOS Star Trek. In quite a few scenes, you can actually see the set walls shake when the doors swoosh open and shut. In episodes that were near the end of seasons, you can actually see the seams of uniforms coming apart.

I have to remind myself, that most people watched this, (a) in black and white and (b) on a TV smaller than most computer monitors. At the time I doubted anyone on set figured we would be watching these shows on HD 72" screens

This is what's so sad about Babylon 5. They filmed the live action scenes in HD widescreen and then cut them to size until widescreen became mainstream. Unfortunately, the CGI was based on the old screen standard. So updating the whole show to Blu Ray standard was impossible.

Fortunately, it was announced they are redoing the whole series with new actors. They're using the same storyline but using CGI they wish they had when it was originally released.

Babylon 5 was great, years ahead of it's time.
