PS3 Support - When to increase the benchmark?

There is a huge difference in the playerbase between DCUO and FFXIV - players in FFXIV do not waste a PS4's worth on ingame gamble boxes so they can actually afford the new hardware :D

No, PS3 is not the only problem, but ignoring that it is a problem is part of the problem, and it is a major part

Even a couple years there were complaints from PS3er's about serious lag and not being able to do Open World missions because the mobs were taking too long to appear (and that even happening in certain instances)

Most people dont keep cars, phones and TVs 11 years but somehow keeping an 11 year console around makes sense? Seems legit  Like someone already said, the ps4 is $150 now. Not gonna get much cheaper then that. And ya arent getting a good pc for that either. Time to upgrade.

Excuse you, but totally unrelated games like SWG with no PS version around were also affected by the hack (excluded from payment/login for a while back then) so I doubt Sony ever told the full truth about the hack. And from a security point of view, they were and are right in doing so.

Or was that a differen hackk one year before? Easy to mix up since Sony got hacked that often it's hard to keep track of. And they shouldn't have that info about axing Garfield and rebooting Spider-Man with a new actor alongside Marvel Studios on the PS3 servers either.... ;)
  6. DarkVisor 15000 Post Club

Never heard of the PC servers being hacked
Yes, it was the Sony system that was hacked, but had only heard of the PS accounts that were compromised

My youngest car is 18 years now and no suitable replacement on the market in sight currently. My oldest car is from 69 and thus a little older than me. And I'm pretty sure lots of people would trash their new car and buy an older one if they had the right money - cars are not a well picked example for your cause :D Main part is that cars used to be a quality product for the majority of the time span they are around.

But, if you insist on the PS3 players upgrading, how about this one: Daybreak will celebrate "hardware update month" with a cyber-villain/-character themed event (Cyborg, Calculator etc. - those guys :D) and will grant every PS3 player who sends in a certified proof of purchase for a PS4 stabilizers of the same value. Maybe they can do that working together with Sony or Amazon or both of them. That would solve the problem, don't you think? If they make TC drop rates extra crappy for that time without telling, it wouldn't even cost them that much of revenue....

Friend of mine is usually storing all his emails, he may have the notification still and he didn't drop PC for console gaming before 2 years ago. Sony hot hacked a lot because they generally don't care that much about security as it seems, which is the point: it's as useless to pinpoint problems that are rooted inside a company structure to a certain piece of hardwar as it is to deny that this certain piece is limited.

Of course the PS3 is limited, a look at the hardware sheet will tell. Is that a problem for the game moving forward? Probably, and for memory-heavy additions certainly. Is that the main problem holding the game back? Hardly. Look at it this way: When servers get more and more populated, rendering in Gotham and Metropolis slows even more down on the PS3 than it is usually. Still, the PS3 already has those large open world portions not working very well around. So can this be the reason to not add a third city of that size? Nope, in fact doing so might give PS3 players more incentive to change. The reason to not add a full sized third city - no matter if new or upgrading Central City - is a decision, not the limitation of the PS3 that would render it as slowly as Gotham and Metropolis.

Why do people expect the course of the game to change after the PS3 is gone? The main problem sits in Daybreak's offices, and that is not about to change anytime soon.

PS3 isn't the only thing holding this game back, but it's a fact that the PS3 is outdated and simply can't cut it any more

Going back to the (flawed) car analogy: the reason why it's flawed, is because all a car needs to run is a chassis, windows, four wheels (that freely rotate), an engine, fuel for the engine and a steering mechanism (okay, yes, there is probably a few more things but that's the basics), and that's why even an original Model T can still work on city streets or backroads, but a PS3 today is like attempting to take the Model T onto the Autobahn: it's just going to screw up everyone elses day

Game Update 3 and the hack were probably the biggest early killers of the game.

Although that was an entire attack on the network, so it was the networks fault really, not the playstation itself.

Devs will never drop the PS3, for two reasons :

They've made it super, startlingly, blisteringly clear that "whatever makes money will remain a priority", and there's still a crapload of people who pay to play the game playing it on a P3.

Also, if they DID drop the PS3, technically speaking? Certain problems would still exist because Unreal 3 is outdated as hell; keeping the PS3 around insures that this argument takes place between the two halves of the player base, instead of becoming the somewhat uglier conversation wherein they reveal that these updates aren't going to occur because they simply don't feel like doing so.

You guys DO remember that this is the same bunch of people who promised balanced powerset performance for the last 3 years straight right?

I've made this point time and time again but people refuse to listen because games like Arkham Knight where made on Unreal 3. Literally a whole different kind of game yet they believe the if can do that then it can do anything. Dumbest argument ever.
  13. Wade Spalding Loyal Player

But the PS3 even works without windows :p

You're still missing the point. To stay in your analogy: What is the use of removing all cars not fit for Autobahn from the circulation/access to streets when the decisionmakers already decided against having Autobahn in general? That is the situation DCUO faces. Customization options are not refinancing the effort to create them unless they fit in a TC. Large scale open world content is obviously not working well either so the next huge parts of content will be events, events and more events. Y'all behave as if the Jackster and his posse would change the game direction completely the minute support for the PS3 falls - they will not, simply because the luck for a minute and fast food content pieces method hauls money in while neither monthly content nor the larger sized DLCs did that in a matter to keep the game running.

Do you think Sony sells a daughter company because it produces outstanding numbers? Do you think gaming companies drop their conceptions every year a new because that is fun or to piss off its customers?

The point was: the PS3 is still great for what it can do, but what it can do is being left on the sideroads

Think of it like the movie "Cars": the PS3 is Radiator Springs, once upon a time, it was booming and had lots of visitors, but eventual the world moved on and built a super highway, the problem is, PS3 wants to force the traffic on the highway back to Radiator Springs but, unlike at the end of the movie, it has nothing new to offer, so unless there is a way to revitalize and upgrade the PS3, you are simply punishing everyone else

Again, the PS3 is great at what it can do, but what it can no longer do is cater to the modern MMO (or whatever the new 'buzzword' for what DCUO is) crowd

Ps3 still generates a healthy amount of income for the game. Sadly it's probably still more than PC generates

Yeah, and it would generate the same if upgraded to the PS4 (sure am glad this didn't start when the PS2 was still active)

Also never compare Dcuo to ffxiv. Ffxiv has over 150000 paying subscribers. Dcuo doesn't even have half that many paying members on all 4 of its platforms.

Dcuo depends on replay badges and tc sales. While dcuo is growing. It does not have the same active Playerbase it had in 2014.
  18. Wade Spalding Loyal Player

Nope, you're still not getting it. The traffic never left the PS3. Radiator springs, when it comes to DCUO, is the PC landscape/population. But since you try to ignore the fact that the merge was done to save the game for PC - or bring up totally unrelated things to get away from that topic - you will never get it ;)

    Besides:

    http://www.pcgamer.com/pc-gaming-market-worth-36-billion-in-2016/

PC is making up 36 million of 91 miliion market in total. That is not the majority ;) Not to bad either, but the focus is moving more and more away from PC gaming. We can meet back here and compare 2017 numbers next year.

It is undoubtly that a high end specialized gaming PC will always be able to run more complex, higher quality games etc. than a console - every bit of hardware can be updated etc. to allow for keeping the tech standard as high as possible. Speaking in the original car analogy, the PC is still a quality product (or better: can still be, if the customer stays away from the cheap parts). The problem is that this quality will not get food from the gaming industry. Look at Star Citizen: when announced, lots of people were "Oh!" about the hardware requirements, now the game is stil not released and way more people have met those requirements with their PCs - but the result is either a game not pushing the limits at release or a game that will never be released because the company is constantly trying to max out the games performance. Currently it looks a lot like the latter ;)

Too few people actually demand those qualities, quality itself becomes less and less a deciding factor. "Trapping" customers is the way to go, and that works by psychology, not complex challenging game worlds. If Daybreak dropped the PS3 tomorrow, just two things would change: the devs lose an easy excuse for not doing certain things a tiny minority demands and even less people would actually pay for, and Daybreak would lose all the money the PS3 is still creating. You and the likes of you are asking to evacuate a village near a river to create room for a dam they dream of, but that dam will not only never be build, but also isn't even planned by the guys in charge and also is not wanted to exist by those guys.

But I'd seriously increasingly like to see the PS3 getting dropped by Daybreak before Sony drops it. See the responses of players when the subscription fees go up to cover the losses. See the reactions of players on these boards when the devs have to say "Sorry, we don't think the manpower invested to updated the graphical engine of a 7 year old game will not pay off" and "that type of content usually does not pay off so we will not create any more of that" etc. I'd take a day off to quote everyone of those players to answer with some "told ya so :p" :D

If we're defining growth as expansion to other platforms, you're correct.

If we're defining growth as a direct expansion of the active daily playerbase, that's not the case now and hasn't been for a while.
