Question to the DC community regarding powers (personal problem)

Am I the only one who hates being a lot of the same power/or feel some type of way if I stick with a power when it was weak or decent at best, yet the same people talking bad about it switch to said power? I’m a person where i pick a power solely because I like the mechanics of how it operates. But to see so many people hopping over to my power makes me feel upset. Usually in MMO’s if there is a broken power or character, every one and their grandmother would hop on the train except me and a hand few of people I know.

There are people who stick with a power through the good times and the bad. That’s why I have respect for Electricity players that I know we’re Electricity long before the revamp dropped. Anyway, the power I’m hinting at is Quantum. I wasn’t Quantum when it first launched but I was Quantum about 8 months after it did. This is one of the reasons why I wish they got rid of power respect tokens awhile back but for marketing and profit reasons, I understand why they won’t. It might not be a big deal to a lot of you guys out there but I feel disrespected for all the bashing my power was receiving, only for half of the community to make a Quantum troll and hop on the train now that it’s actually good in PvP and a excellent troll in PvE.

Why is the community like this?

Man I would've thought this was a 2016 thread. This hit so close to home lol. My dilemma I have when it comes to choosing a power or any class for a mmo are based on questions like; is alot of people playing this class, how many roles are there, is this class op or not etc? I like to be a underdog. For dcuo case electricity when first released was a beautiful looking power and one of the most hardest healing powers to be utilized, so it was the perfect fit for me throughout my years. But I think since I knew I was gonna take dcuo seriously pve and pvp wise, I think it was only a problem from a competitive and usefulness standpoint.

As far as people switching powers go, thats been a thing since ancient history or "golden era" of dcuo we like to call it. Even during those times when everything was close to balance, there was always 1 outlier of a power that people would flop too. Thats when FOTM really was a thing around here, so far to the point the controversy the community came up with was to sell tokens.

It really depends on the motive behind why people do that. One I instantly dislike is when people are using it for bashing reasons. However, you will have some folks whos doing it for the category of helping out others or they want to be a specialist. Back in 2013 I knew of 1 guy who was one of THE BEST dpses in the game, that people would offer to pay for his service as a DD. This required him to switch to whatever power that was tested or heard of was killing it. Im telling you, when people saw what power this guy was, they would switch to whatever he was because they knew he knew something that they did not. You would think someone like that sounds like a jerk, but he was a really kind and selfless dude, who just love the art of dpsing during those times. Same as I heard of good tanks, healers, and trolls.

Overall, this is not a dcuo only issue. I see this happen everywhere. Since dcuo is(or was) both Pve and Pvp game, you will have different takes on why.

All the kids have to have the same pair of shoes as the perceived cool kid. Adults are that way too. Why? because most are too lazy or can't figure stuff out on their own. These people are what you call followers.

That is exactly how I feel about those people. It’s a shame most people are mindless drones that can’t make decisions for themselves.

Well to be fair Quantum was never a bad controller, Quantum has been either #1 or #2(a)(b) since like 2014. Quantum has always had the best crowd control abilities in distortion wave and now anomaly being the supercharge generator. It has always had group shields and a teleport pick up power.

Quantum dps is the only variable that has fluctuated. It's gone through time bomb fake damage, to being incredibly power inefficient in terms of power costs, to the most powerful at the time AM (advanced mechanic) to the later days of AM being a slow dps power to after revamp being a respectable midrange-max range dps with a great 100% supercharge. Quantum has no melee abilities and only has 1 decent power interaction where half the abilities work off the wrong pi.

So not entirely sure where you are coming from with all this.....

    I'll throw out a correlation/causation idea.

There are certain powersets that are more popular. Those powersets are the ones that seem to have a lot of guides, hints, builds, and help from the community. The game's actual tutorial system is significantly lacking, so players who want to optimize, often are going to drift towards whatever has the best or clearest guides where they know what to do. Very few players want to be the ones to sit parsing stuff on combat dummies for hours, checking different rotations and different builds; they would rather be told what to do. You can see this because it's not just the powerset that becomes popular, but the exact same builds and rotations.

So what's popular becomes more popular.

It's not like being a Cubs fan through the bad years and then getting swarmed by bandwagon fans when they start doing well. It's more like people following the road directions that come from Google Maps, instead of taking the back roads to try and find their own slightly more efficient shortcut.

Btw, Quantum is quite okay, lol.

It's not the community that's like this.
It's the Egoistical Scorecard Chasers that are like this.
To put it simply, as long as a powerset is doing the most DPS and it's the most easiest thing to do; you can bet your last dollar folks are going to switch; get it nerfed, and then switch to the next powerset. As much as some folks complain about Balance in DCUO, they are victims of their own egos.

2015- Everyone was Quantum when It was TOP, til it wasn't.
2 months after Quantum: Folks switch to celestial, it was TOP, but it was harder to do than Quantum so folks ran away.
Mid 2015-Everyone was Earth when it was TOP, til it wasn't.
Munitions 2015: Biggun Cheese was the only reason people played this powerset, nobody does it anymore.
Late 2015-Early 2016: Everyone switched to Ice, Gadgets, and Mental. You would see other DPS powers maybe, but these were the three most common ones you'd see everyone running with.
Late 2017: Everyone was hoping on Water to be the Next Fotm and be OP, but you know what? Water actually ended up being a pretty good power; and just that... a pretty good powerset. Solid even. So a-lot of people switched, saw the damage, and went looking for Nature and it's beach ball exploit.
Early 2018: People were electric until the developers fixed Telsa Ball and Arc lightning and made them split damage properly.
Early 2018: People were Nature until the developers fixed the Gorilla+Beach Ball Trinket exploit.
Now: Folks are Rage, Earth, or are hybrid with DW into bow.

People will switch powersets all the time, and they may even pick your favorite or talk trash about it: My Advice is to just shrug it off, Veterans who've stuck around with their powerset will know what's good and usually smash power hoppers who got their fresh Youtube loadouts.

It's one thing to acknowledge the vicious cycle of powersets being nerfed and imbalanced, but these people know it and they become apart of the system just to brag to be number 1. But hey, you aren't wasting your money doing that. And you'll be called upon, because people know your track record as either a good DPS or good support role. So I wouldn't worry about what these people are doing.

    Well Kanmaru
Unfortunately, like mmo's I play or have played their communities are like that I'm not sure why myself, but if I had to guess I'd say it's just because people are very judgemental about things they don't understand and that includes the Quantum Powerset. I've made about 3 or 4 Quantum Heroes and I find it's a wonderful powerset it's a well rounded one in my opinion it deals a decent amount of damage for not a lot of energy and it's also great at giving power back to yourself and people your in a group with so don't let what people say about Quantum mess with you.

I think I was ice for a short while when the game launched on PS3. Changed to fire before I stopped playing in 2012. Came back just before revamp and have stuck with fire ever since. I only have one character so I do sometimes think about changing powers because I'd like to play as my role more and fire is probably the worst tank at the moment. But I have so much fun DPSing with fire. I'm always changing rotations and swapping powers in and out of my loadout, I like to think I do alright with fire, of course every now and then I get a rage, earth, elec, or munitions toon that embarrasses me on the scorecard, I just don't take it too seriously and as long as I'm competitive and not holding the group back, I'll probably stay with fire for the foreseeable future.

And to the subject of the thread, I would actually welcome more fire toons. I don't really care too much what others are doing or why unles it directly affects me or my ability to play the game. I don't expect a trophy or pat on the back for sticking with a power either. Just pay my sub and play the game with the friends I've made is the only thing that really matters when it all comes down to it

I don't know if I'd go as far as Jacob did on who it is, but it's definitely players and not the whole community.

Personally I've only done respecs on characters because I liked a new powerset and it better matched the concept for a character I made. That has only happened four times total since I started (Fire to Electricity, Ice to Earth, Gadgets to Munitions, Ice to Water). Chasing the damage FOTM has never been my thing.

But FOTM chasing is pretty much part and parcel of MMOs. Any time a change was made in a combat profession in SWG (before the NGE) you'd have players making changes to their characters to take advantage of any changes with others following.

Quantum has always been the best dueling power because of ko's idk what you are talking about Quantum has always been a decent/good power
  16. Danne0075 Well-Known Player

Let people go whatever power they want. Not trying to be mean but people complaining about others switching powers 24/7 seem to be more mad about others being better at the power than themselves.

If the issue is that people switching to the most op powers make it so that your power gets nerfed then you are wrong. Why would anyone switch to a power only to get it nerfed? Its more that others complaining that, that power is overpowered compared to their own and instead ask for that power to get nerfed.

Play Celestial and you'll never have this problem. Even if it becomes OP, most players will not touch it with a 10 foot pole :D

I have switched powers a lot but has always been because I felt like playing that power for a couple weeks. Sometimes it has been to see what I was able to do with the fotm. My main though has always been healing powers, my 2 main alts have stuck with the other roles for the most part. Someone once said to me though “ If you are a DPS only your role is to produce the highest damage possible. This includes switching powers to better yourself at that role.” Now while I do not completely agree with this nameless Canadian, it is a valid point.
