Every Crisis storyline in DC has featured a Flash. In most of them, a Flash brought about the turning point.

COIE: Barry saves the Multiverse by destroying the Anti-Monitors doom thingy.
Identity Crisis: Barry is the tie-breaking vote that wipes Doctor Light's mind. Wally is left to pick up the pieces.
Infinite Crisis: Wally and Bart take out Superboy-Prime (albeit temporarily) by running him into the Speed Force. Barry and Max Mercury help.
Final Crisis: Barry and Wally outrun death and redirect the Black Racer into Darkseid to bring his tyranny to an end.

And then there's the giant timeline-altering Flashpoint story which is self explanatory.

Frankly the Flash family appear to be the tool to purge history instead of creating it. Crises always erased history. Flashpoint undid most of everything we grew up to know about DC...Nightwing is the last remnant of legacy that has been wiped out of DC post new-52.

Nightwing is one of the few characters to see true sustaining evolution. Wally went from Kid Flash to the Flash to non-existence to 'diverse' Kid Flash Wally. Kyle Rayner has seen evolution recently but only time will tell how long that will sustain. Wally's New 52 treat has pretty much solidified that no great character is truly safe.

Hopefully the possible Titans tv show could change all that and give Dick Grayson the recognition he deserves.
