Why no islands?

Just wondering why we don't have a continent with some island bases/outposts.

Would make gal drops more fun when they are the only way in; no way to get AMSes.

If we had islands in game, how would you want them to be designed? One base, several outposts? Multiple bases? 2 or 3?

    Discuss.

Like Battlefield 1942s wake island. That was a damn fine map. But it will need to be on a more epic scale.

Now they have mentioned that they will be adding more continents in the game later on, so a water based map with water vehicles may not be to far away.
  3. Morpholine

Well, as each "continent" is generally 8 km by 8 km, they could all be considered more akin to islands, really.
  4. Diamond Sword

They will (or want to) eventually make the continents seamless, with traversable oceans between them as well as new air and water craft.

Maybe there will be islands then.
  5. Rivenshield

    We don't have water yet.

    /shrug

Because the cries about Magriders would increase by a factor of 10 if you introduced a map where water is a large factor.

Because Magriders can hover over it.
  7. Morpholine

There's water, just no large expanses of it (that are within the in-bounds play area).

Also: search these forums for "Ghost Island". It has some small bearing on this conversation.
  8. Diamond Sword

They hover 3 feet off the ground, yet still can't glide over a foot high wall. What makes you think they would glide over water without sinking?

I miss the massive bridge fights from Planetside 1. Hopefully if they do bring in more water / islands we will get more intense bridge battles like the first Planetside. I love fighting at the traverse on esamir but there needs to be another spawn at the other end of the bridge!

3 more continents are coming out eventually so wait.

Because that's quite literately one of the hallmarks of the magrider? If maggies DIDN'T float then the outcry from every single VS player would be HUGE.
  12. Diamond Sword

Maybe the unenlightened initiates. Those of us who've been around the Vanu tech long enough, know that they work like a maglift, which requires solid ground for them to thrust against in order to get lift. They would still sink over water, though it would sink slower than a wheeled vehicle.

    SCIENCE!

    Diamond wins.
  14. Chrysalis

Because they can and did do such a thing in the first Planetside when they were a worse vehicle overall at actually being a tank, and Smedley seems really attached to keeping faction-specfific 'fun stuff' in the game.

Except PS1 says you're wrong. Bridge fights were hilarious with all the tanks trying to cross em and just watching a swarm of Mags float by over the water and end everything. Now it would only bring rage.
  17. Diamond Sword

If you guys haven't noticed, not only is the game different, the backstory has also been altered a bit for PS2.

Magriders can't float over water now. There IS water on Amerish and, while it's not deep enough to submerge a vehicle, you can sink a bit, and the mag sinks in it, hovering the same level above the ground in the liquid.

That doesn't mean they won't still be able to traverse the ocean. They are airtight because they're made for space. We'll just be rolling up from the bottom of the sea when there is one :D

    HA! MORE SCIENCE!

I'm sure that when they add naval combat and seamless travel between continents, they'll add islands, maybe even continent sized island chains.
