I feel though that the heart of the matter is that in a Free to Play game, you can't educate everyone on the 'proper' way to play, and have to allow for the fact there will probably always be low-level 'zerg' following the leader and capping in caravans across the map.

Now, good game design in a multiplayer game will allow for that, and create mechanics designed to encourage people towards certain behaviors that will lead to everyone's enjoyment. Regardless of whether the players actually bother to care, or know what they're doing.
Assuming you will always have people who will just do whatever is popular, you want to find sufficient rewards and motivations and reminders to encourage behaviors you want, and discourage behaviors you don't want, regardless of how /you/ feel the game /ought/ to be played. Good game design is only good if it leads to the appropriate or desired behaviors and outcomes, and if it leads to people being bored or the same predictable actions, it requires changing. You can't have a good system if it doesn't work when put into action.

It's like any good game design, really, the systems should reflect the goal of the game.

In Planetside 2, currently...Exp rewards for Base Capping are currently the largest, and most visibly obvious thing, ergo, people want to be involved in base capping to gain exp. It doesn't matter if there are small exp bonuses for defense, or holding certain territories, because most people simply will either never know that, or don't care.

Ideas, thusly, are warranted.”

This is the best alternative I have heard to a straight XP reward for defense, and I think it could work.

As it is I play all the factions to make sure I'm always winning, I suggest more people do the same.
