Ingame economy

I thought of something. What if the game had some trading, buying and selling mechanics... but not like in most games using just a bland store tab. But interaction with other players. The concept in itself seems very interesting but hard to build.
First question: How to make it viable option over just buying?

There is no clear way of making it that way, but what if all weapons became partially exclusive?
What I mean by that is allowing certain guns to be bought at certain times (such as the patriot flare). While players can purchase equipment from each other at any time.

That brings up a new question: How to make buying more viable than getting it from other players?

That one is simple, putting a tax on player bought weapons. If a gun costs 1000 certs in the marketplace, it will cost some 1250 certs to get from a player.
That tax is paid by the SELLER, to not be abused. But that tax can be avoided by using SC to pay for the tax.
Also weapons can be bought any time wish SC for SOE to make profit of it.

I am not suggesting this, I am speculating into the possibility.

Would you think this would, in theory, work?

I'd just be happy with the option to gift other players certs and boosts.

I think this game does need a bigger metagame, although I don't want to sound like the ones harping one about base capture mechanics and what not (although I kinda agree with them). There needs to be more to player interactions I think, proper in-warpgate leaderboards and the like.

I think some sort of player trading would be really good. I was hoping for the idea to happen to implants along with the crafting, but now implants are permanent it is unlikely to happen.

Right now trading is not applicable as because nothing is either consumable or unique, two essentials required for trading.

What if there would be a monthly stock pile of guns resetting each month with lets say 100 copies of each gun? Once no guns are left people can just buy them from each other utile new guns arrive.
  5. TheFamilyGhost

Metagame is the wrong word. Metagame is created by players, not designers.

Interesting concept, but why buy from players when you can buy from the game?
  6. LibertyRevolution

I don't understand this at all... why would a player buy off another player instead of the store?
This just seems like a way to sell certs to me..

I am against any form of player gifting or selling items or certs, the game will end up filled with Chinese gold farmers..
It happens to every MMO that allows trading/gifting...
  7. Codex561

Did you not read the post? I clearly answered the question.

I would be ok with gifting certs/boosts to other players but not trading guns and stuff to them. Economies are also hard to maintain especially of real money or items bought with real money get involved.

Don't even try to introduce an economy.

    All it does is:

    A. Encourage cheaters.

At the moment, Planetside 2 isn't that affected by cheaters because the game is rather pointless. It's a never ending 100% pointless struggle for continent domination. Not saying that I don't like the game but you do have to admit, it is pointless. However if you introduced an economy into the game then cheaters see a market for them to make easy money on.

    B. Encourage spam bots.

No economy, no spam bots. Spam bots appear when there is money to be gained by scamming people one way or another. Other games are infested with them like world of warcraft. Farm bots also start appearing.

    C. Encourage Economists.

You know the type. They see 10 listings of 'mega shoes' listed for '10 credits'. They buy them for the 10 credits and resell for 15 credits. This spirals on and on... In the end, there is no economy, there is just a 'money farm' for highly devoted individuals who corner specific item markets in the economy. This kills the value of the economy for everyone else making it a soulless experience.

    ---

All 3 of these things destroy communities within games. I know Planetside 2 isn't renowned for its community (mostly because the chat system sucks) but it has the potential to expand further. Economy would ruin all attempts at any sort of cohesive community and instead turn people into money hungry bas...ds.

    Bad idea.

So in other words, it would work but it's still bad.
  11. DQCraze

No, this does not appeal to me in the least. It brings more headaches for everyone and that's about all it does.
  12. GeneralPeragorn

I see your point, however I would like something to make interacting with other players more useful than just to arrange operations.

Quite the contrary actually. In my experience, PS2's community is far nicer than any MMO, FPS, or MOBA (not entirely relevant I know) that I've played. Even forumside isn't that bad at all, with the worst insult being L2P.

Shut up, of course TR is always against our brilliant ideas for business ********

I don't like the idea. Trading is stupid, IMO. I would like the idea though to give other people your certs though.
  15. BillBoBaggins

Trading could be done in the actual game.Like having to transport parts for the tech plant in return for good xp.This would open up a lot more roles like having to have escorts to fend away the enemy.
  16. NCDaniel

    No.

Why would we ever want/need this? Seems like an unnecessary complication.
  18. MasonSTL

hmm interesting my iteration of an in game economy would be based on nanites.

some players can harvest nanites and "craft" resources. The harvester would pick which resource to craft and get a profit from them when players use them. Price should be automated in this as to discourage 4th faction trolling, don't exactly know how... or i guess why but this is all just off the top of my head.

I stopped reading after the first sentence. If you can't properly use a PSA tag, chances are whatever you thought of isn't worth reading.

Nobody uses PSA tag for PSA, welcome to forumside 2
