There is for sure a lot of interest in this game if you watch the statistic after the new patch was released. PS2 just does not settle at a certain amount of people like some thought.

Players are actually looking for an improvement in the gameplay of Planetside 2.

The statistic shows that the player activity did raise a lot since the new patch release:

There is a huge interest in Planetside 2 but I dont think the latest patch will hold them since it does not change enough the fundamental gameplay what people are looking for. But it is for sure a good start.

Is this only tracking steam clients?
  3. TheScapegoat

This is very skewed information, the Steam-launcher can become bugged which would prevent statistical gathering. There is also a significant population that launch from the provider launcher.
  4. Moxin

Yes but for showing a trend the amount of players is enough, its just statistics.

I don't disbelieve for a second population went up, because it was VERY noticeable in game.

I rage any time I hear someone say "not everyone uses the Steam launcher."

Of course they don't. But it's still a sample size, which is a fundamental element of statistical analysis.

It's not enough to show a trend if the data that the trend comes from is flawed.
  8. HerpTheDerp

That might be just people launching the game to get the patch. We'll see how many of them stays.
  9. Autarkis

Just quoting you for the truth of it. We're looking at directional data here.
  10. Rhapsody

Yes it only tracks players useing STEAM to launch Planetside.

Its a nice graph to show... but it hardly constitutes a 'large population sample'.... so in the end.. it doesn't amount to much. Most people likely just launch Planetside from its own launchpad because they downloaded it from SOE's website, not threw steam.

    *note*

Im NOT saying the steam-graph is 100% pointless.. just that its such a small sample-size, that it doesn't 'always' = what truly is happening.

The only way to get a more 'accurate' view would be if SOE gave us something similar to what EVE Online does. Give us the actual # of users currently online.

Of course everyone and their grandmother logged in to check out the new Game Update. Immediately thereafter we realized it was broken, and closed the game.

That brief moment will be shown as a spike in your statistics, doesn't indicate anything though.

It shows that players show an interest. Probably for an improved PS2 gameplay, no ? I think so.

It's a "sample" of players that use the Steam launcher. "Players that use Steam to play PlanetSide 2" is not the same as "Players that play PlanetSide 2".
Imagine this: Playing the game stand alone starts to cause issues after a patch which forces people to play through Steam. You'll see the Steam numbers rise like how they are now but that doesn't mean more players are playing PlanetSide 2.Yes that's not the case here but you get the idea.
There's many factors which affect steamers and players, but they don't affect both groups equally. The moment someone uses a steam graph to describe the population of PlanetSide 2 as a whole they are wrong. (Remember before PS2 was available on Steam? Then Steam said there was 0 people playing it. That "sample" is obviously wrong if it's used to see how many people play PS2 all together.) It's almost like polling people to see if there's sexism in the workplace but you only ask males - that one group can really skew things.
  14. Stordito

Probably because all us European people waiting to play for hours? :D

How much do you actually know about statistics? A sample size of 1000 is usually large enough to make a prediction with a precision better than 5%.

    Nobody said that it is.

Yeah, I get the idea how you made up an argument that is completely inapplicable to what we're talking about.

Do you have a point or do you just like pointing out the obvious?

Yes, yes. Phone surveys skew towards people with home phones and street surveys under-report agoraphobics.

But as of right now, there is little issue in performance with Steam launcher vs. game launcher. By and large it's personal preference, and that preference is unlikely to have a marked shift over a short period of time.

The populaton did go up, but keep in mind that while people were downloading the patch, they'd be listed as playing the game in steam because the launcher was open. So if a guy took 3 hours to DL the patch, and then played for an hour, it would appear as if he played 4 hours, which he he didn't.

You know they get TV rating figures from very small samples of people with special tvs/remotes that track their viewing habits. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for this thread.

Also unless you were blind you would have seen there were way more people playing yesterday.
