have played some WOW for c2yrs and some rift.....have been playing around at very low levels (trying to figure out the crafting system but that is a WHOLE different topic!)

Looks like Berserker is a class I could go with - is this ok to level with from scratch, and what trade skills do I go with? It's also a tank as well I believe...

Also, is it worth creating the free 100 - would prob be a mage (either Wiz/Necro/Lock) if I did - is this worth it for a total newb or just play the 2 free ones first?

    thanks

If you are a total Newb in my personal opinion I would not create the free level 100 character, to me at least playing through teaches you how your character is, what spells he has and how to use them. If you jump right into a level 100 you'll have missed a big portion of the game. That is just mho

I always hate when people ask about classes that is so decided by what you like and not what others like. I have a Zerker and I like her just fine, but I've always like my Pally better. If you like the fighter classes try some of them and see which class YOU like better.

Tradeskill imo is dying off, everything is given to you now especially at higher levels. Provisioners are still pretty usefull, and there is always carpenters if you like to decorate. I ended up with all 9 tradeskills because I couldn't decided what to pick. If you go with a fighter class and want to make your own spells go with Alchemist, they are pretty decent because of all the potions and stuff they make too.

Anyhow hope I didn't scare you off any, just please don't pick what someone else tells you to pick because you may not like it at all.

Personally, I would pick a server, and play around with a variety of characters that you may be interested in playing. Play each for a few levels, see which you prefer, then delete that one and re-create it using the 100 boost, I think you only have until June 7 to do so. Also, make sure to try out the server you select during your normally available play time to make sure you like the community and it has what you need available during your times. Look for an active, helpful, friendly guild, casual.

As for leveling a character from "scratch", every single class is viable for this. And, yes, a berserker is a tank. If you have not purchased a subscription, you will be limited to 2 characters, if you have not purchased the current expansion, you will not have the mercenary feature available, you can buy the mercenary feature separately for I think around 1000 Daybreak Cash which is $5 I think, it may be $10. A mercenary acts like another player, it can fight with you, heal you, cure you, etc. You do get a mercenary with the free level 100, but you will not be able to use it without the mercenary feature, I am not sure whether you can use it during the free PoP trial period or not.

The tradeskills are a whole different thing. If you want a tradeskill that can consistently make you money although not in heapingly large amounts, a carpenter is a good choice. I don't make a ton of plat, but its enough consistently that I can purchase what I need and want that I cannot get myself. Decorators are always looking for house items. If you are looking to make potions to heal yourself and you don't have a healing merc , alchemist is a good choice. If you want good food/drink and don't want to buy it, then your option is the provisioner. If you want to make your own armor, then an armorer is for you. From my perspective, a tradeskill to complement your character depends on your playstyle and overall goals.

The biggest thing is, remember this is a game, have fun, develop your character the way you like to play. Do not let someone else tell you what way you have to play. There is a significant amount of content to explore, stop and smell the roses, and enjoy the journey.

Good luck and welcome to Norrath. If you find yourself on Antonia Bayle, give me a shout and I will try and help you out.

Yes, Cyrrena can help you out, as can others, myself included. On AB server, though its not that busy and some of the roleplayers are rear ends, there are still lots of nice people there! But find a server that you like and then find a friendly guild to help you as you help them! Good luck and I hope you stay and play with us all!

There are a lot of people that are willing to help. Then again there are those that feel the need to be rude, so yea for sure check out your server first. I am on Maj Dul so you can give me a tell too and I will try to help with any questions. Right now I am working on Kaysandra and Shalemar so you can try either one of those. A lot will depend on your play style. Will you be soloing a lot will you be grouping? Grouping is a bit more difficult with a tank you really need to learn how to play your character ie turning mobs, taunting ect. A tank is also excellent for solo. Do you like to get into the fight or do you like to stand back and just do damage? Do you feel the need to heal and cure people? There is a lot to picking a character. I agree with Cyrrena play several different ones learn how to play them and then use the level boost if you want. You do miss a lot of content though just jumping to level 100.

There is one of the best imo games I've played, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it too. Rift was fun for a bit but I could never get into WOW for some reason.

Thanks for the info guys - at the moment I'm not buying anything as I test the game out and see what I think; if I get far enough I would guess solo/dungeons would be my thing; raiding and my schedule don't mix.

Re the Lvl 100; that was my thought too so might try and make a mage idc and level as necro with the pet!!

Play what class you think you will have fun with and play the way YOU want to play! Just know that if you play in too weird of a way that some may not want to group with you, but you will always find those who will encourage you to play your way and work with you! I know I have! Both in and out of guild!

Ok - last newb question I hope. I've set up my Berserker macro (Rift player you see!!); however I don't know how to set the auto-attack up for melee as I open with my bow most of the time...using the ~ key has no effect
  9. Meneltel Well-Known Member

Under character tab, options (or something like that,) at the bottom is setting for ranged, melee or combination attack. So you set to combination and you can pull at range, but if close enough to smack them, you will rather than keep using ranged. That might solve your problem.

You can mostly ignore the buttons, range pull with your bow, then as the mob moves in use your melee combat arts such as rupture, raging blow, body check etc. The game will auto switch between range and melee depending on what combat art you're using and distance to mob.

Also note that the free level 100 is limited time offer, expires 7th June, so you could make the level 100 and park it until you feel more confident with the game.

Cool thanks for this - still no idea what to make for second toon; can't get hang of ranger as expected something like WOW hunter spec and yet it's melee?
  12. Meneltel Well-Known Member

It is melee until about your 20's or 30's. Its a hold over from the beginning. You start off as a Scout category of class and then narrow to Predator, I believe and end up Ranger. So you get your bow skills later but for a LONG time you are a melee. And unless you have a tank, your bow skills will be fairly useless soloing, your best attacks are from the side or behind and you cant do that if its just you! (Yes, I have a 100 ranger that is collecting dust as I prefer my SK).
  13. Arjwen New Member

oh so will I be able to switch my newbie Wizard to a warlock if I choose later....same sublclass I believe...
  14. Meneltel Well-Known Member

I don't think so, but some classes have an alignment opposite that you can switch, like from Shadowknight to Paladin. But I think once you are a full wizard, you are stuck as one, but someone who knows more may speak up, I hope.
  15. Rosyposy Well-Known Member

Yes, you can. It's called Betrayal. There are Betrayal questlines or you can buy a Betrayal Token for 50 Loyalty Tokens.
  16. Rhodris EQ2Wire Ninja

No, warlock can be either good or evil - I don't think betrayal will let you change from wizard to warlock. They are two different classes - wizard is high single-target DPS, warlocks are DoTs, AOEs and encounter (multi-target).
  17. flameweaver Well-Known Member

Yeah you can change, they are the same subclass, both being Sorcerers, and both are neutrally aligned. At the end of Betrayal process you'll get the choice to choose your new class, and will be given the option to change to a new subclass or retain your existing one.

Just started up friday evening myself, after a long break (11 years or so), played a couple MMOs and the generic advice I can give you, as others have here, is to just roll a few classes and try them out for a few levels, there is no other way to really know what their playstyle is like and how they feel and interact.

Back in the day I tried Wizard, Warlock, Necromancer, Berserker, Paladin, Brigand, Inquisitor, Swashbuckler and Shadow Knight before finally settling in with the Wizard and Brigand which ended up being my mains, the inquisitor being good fun for solo and group content too.

Since I like melee, sneaking around, debuffing and spiking DPS as much as possible I think Brigand is my all-time favourite.

PS. After a while you will have a good number of skills so it makes sense to put the most common combos on Macros, they really make some things more convenient, not just for combat but also switching equipment.

I played Everquest on Stromm from 2005 to 2012, stopped just as the expansion that followed House of Thule came out. I played a D/Elf SK as my main (loved her), an Ogress Shaman and a H/Elf Enchanter. Decided to give EQ2 a shot and so far really enjoying it. So far messing around with an Ogre Bruiser and a Half-Elf Inquisitor cleric.

As far as which character to play, try them out for a bit. Granted, if you play any class to say just level 10 you're not getting the full experience of the class, but you can kind of get a quick feel for it. The big thing is, play what you enjoy. It's your character, so play it how you like.

Enjoy! I'm sure you'll like the game.
