There was a hotfix from Microsoft prior to Vista SP1 release for certain games that had issues with vista. It is not an available hotfix from Microsoft Updates you have to search for it on the website. This hotfix also works with SP1.

try this, an email response to me from tech support

We apologize for any difficulty running our games in Vista - Microsoft changed a few settings to Vista that can cause a few issues running some of our games. Please refer the following link for more information.

Answer Title: [TECH] Video Walkthrough: Download Cancelled Error or Play Button will not appear (Vista)
    Answer Link: http://help.station.sony.com/cgi-bi...ated=1180134906

Continuing our efforts to keep pace with current technology, most of our games will be upgrading to DirectX9.0c (August 2007 version) to allow us to take advantage of many of the new features and fixes since our last upgrade in the middle of 2003.

    1. Get the DirectX 9.0c (August 2007) redistributable version (Caution: Download is about 52 MB) at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en

    2. Run directx_aug2007_redist.exe. Extract the files to an easily identifiable directory. (We suggest using C:\DIRECTX as the directory path.)

    3. Go to the directory the files were extracted to in step 2. Run "DXSETUP.EXE" from that directory. Alternatively, if you used the example we provided in step 2, then you can just go to the Start menu and click on Run, then enter in c:\directx\dxsetup and then click OK.

    4. Accept the license agreement. Allow the installer to update the DirectX components.

    FIXED!!!!

all I had to do was delete NVIDIA Network forceware manager, in the programs and features list.

Upgraded to August 2007 directx? Well... that's a good year old as it is. That's totally keeping up pace.
I've been playing Eq2 on vista now for a few months. Short of the game's engine issues (lack of dual core support, coded poorly to run off CPU and not GPU, etc) the game seems to be fine in Vista. However I also am a PC tech so I know what I can clean up in vista, turn off, etc. Had the Application out of memory issue until I upgraded to 4gb of ram, again not a vista issue but a Eq2 issue.

Recently returned to EQ2 on a new rig, which is running Vista 64-bit.
I did homework before purchasing to ensure that all my hardware choices were known to perform well with Vista. I also learned that enthusiastis are much happier with the 64-bit version, so I went that route.
I have had zero problems with any application or game (except that there is no working JAVA plugin for 64-bit Internet Explorer yet).
I have zero new issues with EQ2, although I note that some of the major bugs that have plagued EQ2 since launch (ie, shadows randomly stop rendering) are still alive and well. But as far as Vista-related issues: none.
Just be sure to run as administrator, as you should get in the habit of doing with all games, and I think you will be fine. But, again, I did have the opportunity to select hardware by hand that I knew would get along well with Vista. So that might be part of why I have had such a pleasant time with it (I love it actually).

i have vista home permium 64 and cant get my updater to finish the download once it starts. it finishes the first orange bar then says "update complete", then i hit download again and it downloads the same file again, and does the same thing over and over. the file that keeps downloading is Char_ECB.vpk. are there any fixes or has anyone else had this?
  8. ARCHIVED-Araxes Guest

Download the new Beta Station Launcher

Right click > Properties > Shortcut tab > Advanced > Check the box for Run As Administrator

That will stop all of your issues with the downloading, etc.

    That is for Vista 64.

Out of memory issue - Vista. Nice try "PC tech", but if you set the app up right, it runs perfectly, even on dual core systems. Have been running EQ2 with little to no problems since beta 2 and during the launch of Vista was the only game that work straight from install. The :Out of memory" happened with MANY games from the start, and postponed me from playing my favorate games untill SP1 when it fixed the problem that many games had.

Thoes with NVidia boards and the NVidia firewall, you really need to check it, it can do as much as crash the system when you try to start EQ2, which is not the fault of Sony.

Sorry for those who don't like flaming on the forms, I hate it as well, but I hate people who claim there a "PC Tech" and make a bad image for the rest of us real PC Techs who do our homework.

I'm seeing a bunch of people able to play eq2 on vista 64bit, and have recently heard it now supports dual core! (cheer)

I just got a new Dell XPS 420
Intel Quad Core 2.4ghz, ATI HD 2400PRO, 3GB RAM, Vista 32-bit Home Premium.
    1. At first patcher would not even load (error message about the image can't load). This was without SP1, only with critical updates.
    2. Download SP1, updated catalyst drivers latest ones from ATI/AMD, set compatabilty on EQ2.exe to WinXP SP2, and check box to run as administrator. Also right click icon to run as administrator. Everything came up fine and patcher loaded and started patching. However patching took extremely long because it would stop and I would need to restart it many times. Took me about a week because I was only doing it when I was home from work and not watching it all the time.
Everything is working great in game and is a huge performance increase from my last machine and running at higher levels for video quality love it looks like a new game. Vista rocks by the way....
    Old setup was a P4 2.4ghz, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 1GB Ram

I have many OS options in front of me (except Linux) to use for EverQuest II and would like community advice on which OS to use.
My current set up is as follows:
Hardware = MAC Pro 2.7Ghz Dual Quad Core, 6Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
OS multi-boot, OSX (of course), XP Pro, XP64, Vista Business (Vista not installed yet)

My issue is that I currently have a smooth running version of XP Pro, in fact it's the best install I've had to date and I find it amusing that it's running on my MAC better than any of my former high end gaming PCs. The problem is that I want to use XP64 to get use out of the 6Gb of RAM I have. Mac's Boot Camp doesn't support XP64 but I have installed it anyway to test it since some people out there have gotten it to work but of course I can't get the Boot Camp drivers to work due to the prvious mentioned lack of support for XP64 in Boot Camp. However, Boot Camp will work with Vista (oddly) and I am debating using Vista to run my games, specifically EverQuest II instead of XP64 since apparently I'd have to jump through many hoops to get it work properly on my Mac Pro.
    So my Question is:
Do I stay with my smooth running version of XP Pro and sacrifice the use of all the hardware that that it doesn't see (which I don't really want to do), jump through hoops to use XP64 so I can get use of my 6Gbs of RAM, or do I use Vista to run EQII since BootCamp supports Vista?
The OS I'm trying to build up here is a game only system. I want it as trouble free as possible and use as much of my hardware as possible. I don't really want to stay with XP Pro since it doesn't use or see 4 of my 6 gigs of RAM but it's hard to give up the stability for the unknown.
    -------------------------------------------------
If you don't know what Boot Camp is...
Boot Camp is a utility included with Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard" operating system that assists users in installing Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista on Intel-based Macintosh computers. Boot Camp guides users through non-destructive re-partitioning (including resizing of an existing HFS+ partition, if necessary) of their hard disk drive and using the Mac OS X Leopard disc to install Windows drivers. In addition to device drivers for the hardware, the disc includes an applet for the Windows control panel for selecting the boot operating system.

I have a new issue. When the crashes first started I was able to fix it by just turning off multicore support. Since the patch to fix vista, I have been crashing with a C++ Virtual Runtime Error "pure virtual function call". I am reenabling multicore support and will see if that solves the issue. Anyone else experiencing this new crash? I don't usualy post of this forum but this seems to be a wide-spread issue.

I am using Vista 32bit Ultimate Edition 4gb ram, 2.66 dual core Intel processors, Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT.
I am going to also try running in full screen mode to see if that helps too.

After changing to fullscreen and turning multicore back on I am noticing a huge increase in performance and so far after 30 minutes of game play no crash "crosses fingers".

Ive been playing EQ2 for a week now with mounting frustration. After receiving repeated "EQ Client has stopped responding" message, I reduced all display/sound options to Min. Performance was fine for a couple of days. Now I cant get past the Zone Load Screen...EQ Client has stopped responding.
    Windows Vista Basic 32 Bit
    1.5gb RAM
    Intel Pent 4 3.00Ghz
    ATI Radeon 1100
*edit* Just upgraded to ATI HD2400 Pro and still cant get beyond Zone load screen. Exits to desktop and I get EQ Client Application has stopped working. Earlier today I got to Character select screen and couldnt go beyond. Same result.
