Everyone knows the game will never be changed enough for having a choice of ranged or melee unless you don't mind losing out on mass DPS and stuff. Lets all just hope that EQ Next will have the option to choose if you want to be ranged or melee...
You do have a choice... it's just bound up in the class you choose to play, not in what is the optimal way to play a particular class.
Like Mermut says - you do have a choice now. You can be a casting Warden if you want to, and have a blast (no pun intended)...the only time it really would be an issue is if you were in a group or raid where they needed you to min/max your character. In that case, a non-melee Warden would not be optimal.
