Hello, everybody. After years of inactivity in the MMO sector, I decided to give EQ2 a new chance and see what has changed since back then. I installed the game via Steam (since the install via the Installer available from SOE didn't work for some reason). After installing, patching, buying Age of Discovery and Chains of Eternity and signing up for Gold membership, I tried starting the game, only to be greeted with the message mentioned in the thread title. "Everquest 2 requires DirectX 9.0c" Now, thing is.... I know that it is installed. 1.) Steam installed it when first running EQ2 via it 2.) Vanguard (which works, btw.) also did install DX9 when installing and playing via Steam 3.) I manually downloaded the DirectX 9.0c Redistributable (June 2010) form Microsoft, installed it in Admin mode, then rebootet 4.) Other games relying on DX9 seem to work without a hitch, it is only EQ2 that throws a tantrum I am on Windows 7 Ultimate x64, btw. Here are the (likely) relevant parts of the DXDiag (x86 version, as EQ2 is a x86 game) : Code: ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 1/27/2013, 20:17:31 Machine name: FROZENDREAM Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333) Language: German (Regional Setting: German) System Manufacturer: System manufacturer System Model: System Product Name BIOS: BIOS Date: 09/21/10 09:55:06 Ver: 08.00.15 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.7GHz Memory: 12288MB RAM Available OS Memory: 12278MB RAM Page File: 1632MB used, 35220MB available Windows Dir: C:\Windows DirectX Version: DirectX 11 DX Setup Parameters: Not found User DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled DxDiag Version: 6.01.7601.17514 32bit Unicode ------------ DxDiag Notes ------------ Display Tab 1: No problems found. Please make sure you have the most updated launchpad. Was the account originally created through steam or through soe? If it was through soe, download the latest launchpad here: http://launch.soe.com/eq2
The account was originally creatd for Star Wars Galaxies in 2004 via the SOE website. I started playing EQ2 with this account in 2005 if memory serves correctly. The Launchpad you linked to doesn't work for me, sadly. That's why I, as a last resort, went through Steam to install the game. The problem with that Launchpad for me is that it simply doesn't do anything when I start it. No splash screen, no loading, nothing. The only evidence I have that I started it is that the process Launchpad.exe*32 is shown in the Task Manager, occupying ~5.120kb of memory. That amount of memory does not change whatsoever, the process simply hangs there until I manually kill it. The Launchpad from the Steam install works, though, at least up to the point where I try to actually start the game itself. ^_^"
Sorry to reply to myself, but I couldn't find a way to edit my previous post. I have completely wiped EQ2 (Steam install) from my drive, downloaded the installer you linked to (@TSR-AlexS) and tried once again installing via that one. Initially, it did not work, but after deleting the included Launchpad.ini and restarting the LP twice, it suddenly worked. This is the info it displays in the "About Launchpad" part of the advanced settings: Code: Copyright 2009-2012 Sony Online Entertainment. All rights reserved. LaunchPad: 4.0.0.719 (18) Shell: 5.1.5.4 Installer: 1.0.3.183 So I went ahead and downloaded the entire game again via the Launchpad. After this, I defragmented my MMO harddrive (have a separate physical drive just for online games, as they tend to get patched frequently), rebootet the machine and then tried starting it once more. Same result, though. "Everquest 2 reuires DirectX 9.0c" I then activated the hidden elevated admin account Win7 Ultimate comes with, logged into that and used it to both re-install the Catalyst driver Version 13.1 and DirectX 9.0c (source: the June 2010 Redistributable from Microsofts site). After rebooting and disabling the admin account again, I tried starting EQ2 once more. Same error as always. "Everquest 2 reuires DirectX 9.0c" I also tried lowering my desktp resolution from 1920x1200 to 1024x768 and disabling my 2nd monitor. Reboot, try again to start... same error once again. I am honestly at my wits end here. I wonder what it will take to make EQ2 recognize that DX9.0c is actually installed..... Speaking of that, how exactly *does* EQ2 determine if you have the correct DX version?
A guess on my part but if you have more than one output of vga/dsub on the vid card then switch and see if that makes a difference. Other things would be to uninstall the video and sound drivers and just use drivers available from windows update. As far as problems with the SOE launchpad these things are usually caused by windows security or firewalls and antivirus. If you haven't already done so then move your entire EQ2 folder to something like c:\games\EQ2 to see if that helps. You can also trying starting the game by running the file everquest2.exe All just speculation on my part but would only take 10 minutes to try.
Thank you for your suggestions. My video card has 2 DVI outputs and 1 HDMI output (which is disabled). Both DVI outputs are in active use normally (dual monitor setup). As mentioned above, disabling one running single monitor doesn't do anything to help. There are no WU drivers for the Asus Xonar Phoebus as far as I am aware, just the generic Microsoft sound drivers that come with Windows. And the ATI/AMD driver on WU is not up-to-date (which would likely cause trouble for other games on my rig, so I am hesistant to try, to be honest). Windows Security is disabled, I use Kaspersky and a hardware router (ports required by LP/EQ2 according to the Knowledgebase entry are forwarded). Though disabling Kaspersky doesn't help, either. The install directory for EQ2 is O:\EverQuest2 on my machine. It is my habit to never install games or 3rd-party applications into protected directories like the Program Files, Program Files (x86) etc. folders. Trying to run EQ2 via the Everquest2.exe yields the exact same result as if I went through the LaunchPad, I am afraid. "Everquest 2 requires DirectX 9.0c"
When I downloaded the game on this new build 3 weeks ago, it directed itself to: C:\Users\Public\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\EverQuest II\ Make sure you're using the latest launcher https://launch.soe.com/eq2/ and I highly suggest the full version! despite all 3 version of DX coming with win 7, I also suggest you try downloading it again http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34429
No, I can confirm that it is indeed installed to the "O:\EverQuest2" directory. The "C:\Users\Public\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\EverQuest II\" folder you mentioned doesn't even exist on my PC. Already use that. I have re-installed DirectX 9 multiple times from multiple sources (Steam, both webinstaller and redistributable from Microsofts site) over the course of trying to figure out a way to get EQ2 to run. (As I have mentioned multiple times in my prior posts. ) Thank you for your input, though.
Again, sorry for replying to myself here. ^_^" Anyways, after a lot of back and forth with CS, the problem is still not fixed. I'll post what is know so far here, maybe somebody else has an idea. *crosses fingers* install location does not seem to matter. i tried various places, including the default path, but still got the error. using a clean boot environment does not affect the error popping up installing older drivers for my graphics cards didn't help my hardware has not changed since last playing EQ2 successfully some years ago, only drivers are obviously newer now when using the streaming client, i can successfully log into the game, but only as long as the client has not yet finished pre-loading the assets. Once all assets have been downloaded, it throws te same error as the full install version. I have 2 monitors hooked up, both at 1920x1200. Lowering the resolution and disabling one of the monitors does not help I tried various ways of installing EQ2: SOE installers from http://launch.soe.com/eq2 , my original EQ2 Collectors Edition discs and Steam, but the error crops up with all of them DirectX 9.0c was installed multiple times, both with "normal" admin account and with the hidden elevated admin account of Win7 Personally, I find it strange that the streaming client would be able to successfully start the game as long as the preloading has not finished yet. This, in my opinion, shows that DX itself is unlikely to be the culprit, since it should throw the error regardless of streaing or full client as the base game is the same, just how much is stored on the PC itself and how much is streamed differs. Anyways, if anybody got some idea, I am all ears. Cheers!
I haven't seen this posted so it's worth a try. Right click on your EQ2 shortcut, select preferences. Select your Shortcut tab. Go to your target line and at the end of your directory should look like this (\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\EverQuest II\LaunchPad.exe"). Hit space and type patchme. Should look like this (\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\EverQuest II\LaunchPad.exe" patchme). I have had this same problem on win 7 64bit and this fix works for me. The thing is sometimes I will get that error later with the patchme in the path. This usually after EQ2 has a update I then need to erase the patchme and it will work for awhile or just once. Then I will have to add the patchme again. No clue why this works nor what causes the error. Just stating what has fixed this problem for me.
Hmm, I'll try the patchme thing. I've been crashing the past week or so when I try to zone into (or launch in) my GH or Prestige home (both of which have had item count expanded), and I can't get back in the game with that toon. I have to load it from my laptop and zone before I can use it again on my desktop. Windows 7 64-bit, 4GB, ATI Radeon 2100.
