keep your eyes to the floor at first. If it glows, pick it up. These thingies more often than not are collectibles. Also known as shinies. First you'll get an option to ad it to your collections, do so. The next time you get the same exact shiny is for selling as you already have one in your collection it automatically goes into your inventory. You might have two collections to ad it to, if so, ad it. When it only fills your bags, it's time to sell them if you get more of that same exact shiny. Finishing a collection has it's rewards as well, so make sure you fill your own collections before selling them off.
How to sell without a broker token, ask a friend (or anyone willing " level 9, a little help here??" in chat) to make a salesman's crate for you, at first they'll be too expensive to buy from broker even if you have broker access.
You will need a salesman's crate to sell stuff. When you go to your home city, you get a quest to find and rent your first house. Accept that quest. Then search around the city until you find a merchant (general goods usually) selling bulletin boards. Buy a bulletin board. Now, go back to your house, right click on the bulletin board to place it on a wall. Once placed, clicking on it will open another menu and 6 empty slots. Place an empty salesman's crate (ask a friend to make one for you) into one of the slots (just slide it over from your inventory). You need at least one item inside it, so slide one of those things you wish to sell into the empty salesman's crate and set the price. Once you have the price set, you can now place the salesman's crate onto the floor. First item should be like way out of any sane person's range (1000plat for a falcon feather for instance). Once you have the price set... Now just slide all the other stuff you wish to sell into the salesman's crate and reduce the price of that falcon feather to a copper or two below the next highest offer using search. Once all of the stuff you wish to sell are priced, click on your door. Set public house access to visitor. Now you are selling. Only problem, if you are free to play, people have to physically come to your house to buy directly from your salesman's crate. Normally people shop via the broker, so patience is the key here.
For new players there are tons of old players willing to help you out with free advice and even items if you are polite and friendly. Especially with getting set up. There is no such thing as a dumb question, only dumb wisecrack answers. Never be afraid to join in with any chat channel. Sooner or later you'll pick up the lingo and there are plenty of us oldsters willing to help you out.

P.S. You may also trade person to person for immediate compensation, even if you are still on tutorial island. Person to person transactions do not require broker access. Just slide your item over the person you wish to trade with or give to. They may refuse or accept the offer. Don't hit accept until you are satisfied even if you are the one offering the deal.
