    - New Content Model to Complement Existing Expansion Strategy -

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online (MMO) gaming, today announced the forthcoming Adventure Packs for EverQuest II, a content release strategy intended to give players access to new content between traditional game expansions. The first Adventure Pack is scheduled for digital release in March 2005 for $4.99.
"Today we're announcing a new content strategy for EverQuest II that presents online games in an entirely new manner, like that of a television series, or serial movies," said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. "Players will be able to unlock ongoing storylines that appeal to them, while enabling us to deliver more content than ever before."

The planned content release strategy involves a mixture of purchasable bi-annual expansion packs along with periodic releases of story-driven Adventure Packs adding new content and gameplay elements to the world of Norrath, in addition to continued updates to the game at no additional charge. The first Adventure Pack will be centered on the Dark Elves of Neriak and an unbridled evil in the tombs below the surface of Norrath. The US version of the Adventure Pack will be available to European players as well at release in English, followed by localized versions.

Adventure Packs will feature new quests, zones, storylines and story arcs that will allow players to further immerse themselves in the shattered lands of Norrath. All players will have access to certain levels of the Adventure Packs; however in order to complete the content, players will need to purchase the Adventure Packs for a small fee. Additional details on the first Adventure Pack will be revealed in the coming weeks.

EverQuest II carries a monthly subscription fee of $14.99 for continuing access to the game world. Players can subscribe using a credit card, or purchase 30-day and 90-day SOE Game Cards, which open the new world of Norrath to those who choose not to use a credit card. Additionally, Adventure Packs will be included as part of the Station Access subscription at no additional charge for those accounts that have been subscribed to Station Access for at least the prior 60 days at the time of release of the Adventure Pack. Station Access includes all SOE-published games for $21.99 per month.

So according to this press release we are gonna have to start paying for stuff that they should be either included in a big update or in an expansion pack. So does this mean there is gonna be a lot more content or the same amount of content that would normally have been there but now everyone has to pay for it again.

This idea is horrible, if I want to play with my guildees wouldn't they then have to buy the same pack, so essentially everyone in the game has to buy the pack if they want to play in a new dungeon. That is a worse idea than expansion packs.

What exactly do our monthly dues go to, fixing the bugs in a game for which we already paid? Shouldn't the game be virtually flawless at purchase time? So then the monthly dues should go to updating the online software and making it have more content and playability. Wouldn't it make more sense that the membership fees provide SOE the capital to continuously evolve the game further, rather than our dues paying the weekly salary of SOE workers to develop software that they are gonna sell to us in about 6 months? Now they are breaking certain content out so that we can pay individually for it while still promising expansion packs that cost the same amount as a new game, but isn't. Its just more levels, a few more zones and hopefully a new class and race. Atleast with SWG, JTL was an almost completely different experience in the game.

I am not against SOE or MMORPGs, I am an addict and I love them, however logically speaking shouldn't they (all producers and servicers of MMORPGs) stop bleeding our pockets for cash flow buy making more products that we have to pay for, when our monies paid has already provided them the capital to produce it. Maybe I am biased and wrong I don't know, it just doesn't add up to me.

i have to agree. what do we pay our $15 a month for? For you guys to fix a buggy game? What is going to start happening it you guys are going to have to devote more time to these new updates (because people are paying you more money now) and the "standard" game is really going to start hurting. This same situation reminds me of what SOE did in swg. "we are pushing back the big combat update/fix so we can put more time and resources in making jtl so we can make more money off you guys." Prove it to us you can keep a game up and running (while adding quality content) before you start making more work for yourselves. after playing a year of swg, i was a little worried this game would turn out like that one. so far thats the direction i see it heading.

Play or don't. Either way, at least they offer something new.

If people had read the numerous other threads about this subject, you would see that they have separate teams workin gon existing content, bugs etc and another on expansions.

Also if you had read the existing threads you would also have seen the fact that further content is planned at no extra cost!

Also the Adventure packs could be viewed as small expansions, ie. delivered in chunks. Put 4 or 5 together and you have the average proce of a full expansion and the zones etc.

The packs are also free to those lucky enough (I am in the UK and thus barred from have a Station Pass) to have a station pass.

Can't see what people's problems with these are.

Oh, and also get to try before you buy with them as well, better than an expansion pack IMO.

Despite what SOE says or what people believe, these so called separate teams will be being paid by their major source of income now, which is monthly dues, then they will sell us a product we already paid for. I for one will buy expansion packs, but I will not buy adventure packs, it just seems silly, unless upon release SOE can prove to me that it is worth buying and not another way to get our monies.

That is why they are letting you try it before you buy it.
