Can anyone confirm that using a charmed pet via Enchanter is dramatically eating into exp?

There is the "feature" with ALL pets - if the pet does 100% of the damage, it will take most of the exp. This is to prevent afk exping. You gotta do 1 damage.
There is a pottery made ring which does a quick casting nuke. That or mem your lvl 1 nuke which casts decently fast. You just gotta do 1 damage to counter this.

Oh my charm pet isn't doing anywhere near the majority of the damage. Just wanted to make sure there was no pentatly to group by using a charm pet as part of the dps.

Depending on the era, using a charmed pet during a grouping situation will help get the target killed faster and thus increase the group's xp. There's certain eras where this works better than others. In the early eras, the mob damage output to hitpoint ratio was very high and a charmed pet could chew through content. As the game progressed, the damage mobs do stymied compared to player characters and charmed pets could still contribute, but aren't the powerhouses they started off as. There's a lot of nuance to this and certain mobs make better charm pets than others. Experiment and see how it feels for you.

There is no penalty to using charm pets. There is danger of course, but thats supposed to be offset by having the most powerful pet (and its always more powerful, even after gates).

I don't know about that. Mangler is on ToV currently and a charm pet is lucky to do half the dps of a mage water pet, even if you gear it out. Been that way for a while. Granted, a lot of that is just because the water pet can benefit from war march and charmed pets can't. Charmed pets are extremely beefy tanks though, so there's that.
