Upaded my CPU, now EQ won't load past server selection

    Greetings. As the title states, after upgrading my CPU last night (I swapped out a 3900x for a 5900x), I can't seem to get past server selection, as the game crashes. Here is what I've tried so far, in no particular order:
    • Deleting eqclient.ini
    • Uninstalling and reinstalling EverQuest
    • Running eqgame.exe and/or launchpad.exe in compatibility mode with Windows 7, disabling fullscreen optimizations, and running the programs as an administrator
    • Running the game in windowed mode
    • Running the game fullscreen
    • Changing the game's resolution
    All drivers (i.e. GPU, CPU, BIOS, Mobo, etc.) are up to date. The game worked fine before upgrading my CPU, so any insight or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Does game crash immediately upon selecting the server or after it loads the zone files and begins the transition to the character select screen? The first would point toward a network issue while the latter would point toward a graphics issue.

    In either case I'd start with a total shutdown of your entire network including router and modem. Then if the problem persists try the Iobit Driver Booster free package to ensure all your drivers are up to date. (I know you updated most, but this package would also update your network, bluetooth, chipset, wi-fi, etc. drivers.)

    Obviously the game itself shouldn't care about the actual CPU you're running so something else changed as part of the process of changing the CPU. Sometimes you never know the cause as you shotgun all the drivers and suddenly things begin to work again.

    Sadly, this didn't have any impact on my ability to get past the server select screen. If you have any other recommendations, let me know, please.
  5. Staccato New Member

    The latter of the two. I click "PLAY EVERQUEST!", the screen transition from server select to a black window, and then the game crashes (all of this taking place within 1-2 seconds).

    I restarted my network and verified that my drivers are up to date with Driver Booster. Neither option helped, sadly.

    If you have any other recommendations, please let me know.

    I guess the next step for me would be to run Windows updates including feature updates and then reboot and then repeat until there are no Windows updates left.

    If that doesn't help then open a cmd prompt window as administrator and then run chkdsk c: /f and reboot and let it test your disk on the very small chance you've got a corrupted file.

    Some of the following you appear to have already tried, but worth working through anything you have not yet tried to see if any of these work (general help tips).

    Getting into the game:

    Run a file check from the EQ Launcher
    (HOW? - https://help.daybreakgames.com/hc/e...73-How-do-I-validate-game-files-in-EverQuest-)

    Add launchpad.exe & eqgame.exe to the exceptions or white-list for your anti-virus & firewall - especially if you are using Windows Defender as this is known to often block connections to EQ.

    Right Mouse button Click the EQ Icon, select Properties then compatibility then put a check in the box for "disable full screen optimizations" hit apply then run as administrator the first time you log in

    Download & install a fresh copy of Direct X 9c
    (LINK 1 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109)

    Download & install the latest C++ runtimes
    (LINK - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads)

    Check what Graphics hardware you are using & uninstall the old drivers & re-install the latest WHQL drivers for it or a new copy of the current drivers if you already have the latest ones.

    Connection issue after the above have been tried:

    Reset your Internet Options:
    Even if you use Firefox, Google Chrome or another web browser to surf the internet, the LaunchPad runs off of Internet Explorer settings. Follow these steps to reset your Internet Options which may improve LaunchPad performance.

    Go to Start, then your Control Panel.
    Click on Internet Options.
    Click on the Advanced Tab.
    Click on Reset.
    Check the box Delete Personal Settings, and then OK.
    Go back to Internet Options to the Advanced Tab, scroll down to Security and un-check "Check Server Certification Revocation" and "Do Not Save Encrypted Pages to Disk".
    Click OK.

    Clear the LaunchPad Cache
    Navigate to the directory of the game you are trying to play and open the launchpad.libs folder. Delete thelaunchpad.cache folder and relaunch the LaunchPad again.

    Flush DNS (reset internet connection)

    Navigate to the desktop. (From Home, tap or click the Desktop tile).
    Right-click the Start button (the Windows logo in the lower-left).
    Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
    When asked whether to allow Command Prompt to make changes to your computer, select Yes.

    Note: If you are asked for an administrative login, you will need to contact your system administrator.
    Type "ipconfig /flushdns" and press Enter.
    Type "ipconfig /registerdns" and press Enter.
    Type "ipconfig /release" and press Enter.
    Type "ipconfig /renew" and press Enter.
    Type "netsh winsock reset" and press Enter.
    Restart the computer.

    Windows 10 is completely up to date on my machine (and normally is). Also, no corrupted files were found. Thank you for your recommendations, please let me know if you think of anything else.

    No issues were found.

    Did not resolve the issue.

    I had already tried this to no avail.

    Did not resolve the issue.

    Let me just say thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to type and/or copy and paste all of these troubleshooting tips. I wish I could report that something worked, but sadly, the issue still persists. I launch Launchpad from Steam, I click the PLAY button on Launchpad, an EQ window loads where a list of available servers are displayed, I click on my server and then click the PLAY EVERQUEST! button, and then EQ and Launchpad both crash.

    If you can think of absolutely anything else, please let me know.

    Also, for what it's worth, any/every other game or program on my PC is functioning perfectly normal. EverQuest is the only program that I cannot get to work.

    In the latest windows update, did it update one of your drivers? If it did, may want to backdate the driver and see if that lets you in.
  11. CatsPaws No response to your post cause your on ignore

    Yeah that is usually why Direct x 9C works because its the only thing eq needs that is different than other games. Some folks have to install it manually to make sure the latest Direct X doesn't override it.

    I know you mentioned you changed the resolution but did you adjust the resolution located in the launcher to 1280X768?

    There was a suggestion which I have never tried but it may work for you and should be easy for you to check since you seem to be computer competent - this is cut and copy - not my post

    The bug is caused by one single entry in the eqclient.ini file which EQ itself makes. The culprit is "WindowedMode=True". This line actually has THREE settings:

    WindowedMode=TRUE
    WindowedMode=FALSE
    WindowedMode=1

    All three of these settings have a different effect on the game. WindowedMode=False is fullscreen mode. That seems to work ok for me and didn't have the bug (although I didn't test it for long). The problem with that mode is that it is hard to alt tab away from, there is a few second delay which is no good at all. WindowedMode=True is the game's best attempt at a real windowed mode, it works well, can be alt tabbed away from instantly. But this is the mode that causes this bug.

    Lastly is the solution, WindowedMode=1 which I would have thought was the same as True, but it isn't. WindowedMode=1 is some sort of hybrid between full screen and windowed

    No, I don't believe this to be the issue. The last Feature Update was installed on June 8th, the last Quality Update was installed on July 21st, the last Driver Update was on July 7th, and so on and so forth. Any updates that I've installed occurred before I upgraded my CPU, and the game functioned perfectly normally with each one.

    I have, yes.

    No luck, I'm afraid, but thank you for posting what you found. If you can think of anything else, please let me know.

    In eqclient.ini, check the value of these GPU related settings:

    HardwareTnL=TRUE
    VertexShaders=1
    1xPixelShaders=0
    14PixelShaders=0
    20PixelShaders=1

    These values are what I recommend to avoid driver crashes. Exit the client, save these settings, and relaunch client.

    The following lines were not present in my eqclient.ini:

    HardwareTnL=TRUE
    1xPixelShaders=0
    14PixelShaders=0

    After inputting those three missing lines and changing the other two lines to mirror what you recommended, nothing changed and the game continued to crash. Please let me know if you think of anything else, thank you.

    You have a crash dump in C:\Crash folder that will have details of the problem
  19. Wulfhere Augur

    I think it's weird that you have 3 GPU devices enumerating and they are all the same one.

    I think you should do a clean install of your NV driver. During installation choose "custom(advanced)" and then checkbox the "perform a clean installation".
