Black Screen when logging in/out

Posting here as well in hopes someone has an answer(already posted in the bug forums)

Greetings, I am trying to return to the game after quite a long absence and keep running in to a problem.

Randomly when I log in or out I end up at a black screen and the only way to get out of it is to reboot my pc. I can make it to the server select screen and when I hit "play everquest" or use the quick button to connect, sometimes it lets me in, other times I end up staring at a window with the EQ logo in the corner and a black screen. The same thing happens randomly when I try and quit from the character select screen.

I've tried completely reinstalling the game, updating all of my drivers, directx updates and nothing. The only temp fix I have found that works is completely deleting the game and installing a new copy. And that only works for the first or first couple logins and then I'm back to the same problem.

I don't have this issue with EQ2 or PS2, just EQ. Which leads me to believe it is specific to EQ1. I've tried the file repair and it tells me the files are all up to date.

The only error I get is if I try and use the uninstall option. It gives me a C++ error.

    Any ideas?

Try switching between full screen and windowed mode by using Alt + Enter.

And/Or make sure you're running the patcher "As Administrator". (You can edit the properties of the shortcut to make it do this always.)

You may have update the directx too far sorta.

Try this one - for some reason some set ups need to have the 9c and the current direct x can override it so EQ doesn't see it.

    General Help tips

Add launchpad.exe & eqgame.exe to the exceptions or white-list for your anti-virus & firewall - especially if you are using Windows Defender as this is known to often block connections to EQ.

Run a file check from the EQ Launcher
    (HOW? - https://help.daybreakgames.com/hc/e...73-How-do-I-validate-game-files-in-EverQuest-)

Right Mouse button Click the EQ Icon, select Properties then compatibility then put a check in the box for "disable full screen optimizations" hit apply then run as administrator the first time you log in

Download & install a fresh copy of Direct X 9c

Download & install the latest C++ runtimes

Check what Graphics hardware you are using & uninstall the old drivers & re-install the latest WHQL drivers for it or a new copy of the current drivers if you already have the latest ones.

Big thanks to everyone. I'm not sure which of the fixes worked since I did them all, but everything has been working great. Thanks!

Excellent tips, but it should be eqgame.exe, not everquest.exe.

    Well-spotted.

I always exclude the entire ..\Everquest folder from real-time AV scans. It helps reduce raid lag because then even your logfile writes aren't getting slowed by AV scans.
