while a few MMORPG do feature in that list no expansions for MMORPG do, vast majority are simply sequels to single player games.
Epic 3.0 should only be attempted if, for whatever reason, DPG is able to commit enough resources to do them justice. Instead, a continuation of the evolving items in ToV / TBL are much better options. These should also include requiring completion of previous content to keep us try-hards busy. Good options: Breakdown in Communication: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=2868 Hero's Journey: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=5553
Think tbm had one (plane of life, which then copied itself within the same expac) Health = windsong (and there was like, nothing to do in that zone) Crypt of sul = temple of bertox from sod
I'm That is very fair. So you don't think a player could write the quest? Honest question. I'd love to write the Ranger quest. And I'd do it for something as simple as a reward to being made an NPC in said quest.
Plenty of the EverQuest players work in fields that are very relevant to game development, writers, coders, software engineers, IT Specialists. There have been more than a few EQ Devs who started out as players and for whom EQ was their ticket into game development after all. I absolutely do think there are dozens of EQ players who could write quality quests for the game, but it's more complicated than just "doing the work", anyone doing that work for a game that is run as a profit making business should be compensated for their time or they are the owner of said work, put another way if the company didn't pay for you to do the work the work is yours so they don't own it or control it in quite the same way that they do for regular employees, to make it work on a volunteer basis you would have to get them to sign up to a bunch of legal disclaimers & already you are in can of worms territory about gig economies & contracts & exploitation of labour, it's a rabbit hole that companies who make money have to protect themselves from jumping down that non-profit projects don't have quite the same set of strictures to adhere to. There are limited in scope ways around that of course, City of Heroes & other titles have had systems that allow players to create content but that hasn't ever been "core" content or content that formed the backbone of major expansions, more additional "stuff you can do for experience". The closest EQ's players got to that was maybe designing a Quest at one of the Fanfaire events, and from an art side the player-studio that has since been terminated.
For those who were not around "back then" there was a "how to write a quest" workshop many years ago and players made 2 quests - Kicking Tail in Dragonscale Hills and Gyrospire Relocation Device in FM. I think that was around 2008. This is a little snippet from when they came out with it: EverQuest players will even see two new quests created by players who attended the 2008 Fan Faire! I know there are some others as I have noticed the information on the write ups that they were player made - just don't remember them all right now.
We'll never get true 3.0s, since it'd take them a year (of not making an expansion) to create a proper quest for each one. The nice compromise were the possessed dreadstone weapons in Rain of Fear. Class specific, and each weapon had a little bonus that was appropriate to the classes strengths.
I would chuckle if they introduce epic 3.0 but only less than one percent of the server could obtain it. Make it so outlandish that you need hero journey done, max slayer, 350 in all TS, etc Hey you asked for it!
My plan would be: 1a short starting city quest, 1b) short per-race quest, 1c) short per-deity quest complete all three and you get unlock short length archtype/theme quests 2a) Tank (war/shd/pal)/Healer(clr/dru/shm)/Melee DPS(mnk/rog/ber)/Spell caster(wiz/mag/nec/enc)/hybrid(rng/bst/brd) 2b) blasting (wiz/mag) holy (clr/pal) CC (enc/brd) animals (shm/bst) trees (dru/rng) death (nec/shd)in-your-face (war/ber) sneaky (mnk/rog) complete both of those, for a final class specific quest that awards a container. Container takes a group/raid drop from the current, and next few expansions to make a lore grouped class/current expansion appropriate best-in-slot weapon aug with unique effects; like an proccing a aggro-free group rune spell proc for enc/wiz, a swarm pet spawn for pet casters, damage+deaggro for DPS, self heal+aggro for tanks, a healer proc that heal more for lower health... whatever is class appropriate. Maybe even make multiple forms that the container can switch the augs between.
Interesting ideas, I recall the "heritage" quests from EQ 2 that were actually very fun & well designed (the few I did for Troll Ogre Iksar). Not sure these would qualify as "epic" quests, which have traditionally featured a class specific storyline with a cast of characters that fit your class but as a tangent from the thrust of the thread these are decent idea starting points.
Most players would not. Because only a fraction of the playerbase would be able to obtain those items in the near future.
