21 years and still can't get it right?

Implying that someone should lose their livelihood because your video game launch didn't go right is pretty tacky.

Investment manager is right on the money. Only 5% of of fund managers beat index funds.

That got me curious so I Googled. Not sure what the $700M was on, but he lost $1.8 billion on Hertz.

I was actually referring to Hertz. Article I read had his stake at like $700M as recently as like 6 months ago.
  5. Accipiter Old Timer

He just dumped it today. So 6 months ago it was a mere $700M booboo. ;) They filed bankruptcy, BTW.

Literally nobody is going to care within the next 8 hours or so when the servers are up and fine. QQ more

It's not the same people though and many have lost their jobs.

I worked today. It was our busiest day in 2 years. Everything went perfect. We are perfect. No issues whatsoever.....

    Said no one ever.

Yeah. My brother works in the industry, very uncertain[stressful] time.

I hear that. I work in the gaming industry (manufacturing, not casino operator). About half of Las Vegas is laid off or furloughed. I had to take a pay cut but at least I'm still working. But I digress...

You're implying that because it's a video game that it's not that serious, but the video game IS their livelihood. Whether your job is managing a video game company or being a server or car salesman is irrelevant , poor performance is poor performance. Do you think if you were on an esports team and you performed badly they should keep you just because "it's a video game"?

So your examples for why this is ok, are more examples of failures that are tolerated?....yah. This is not actually making an argument that this kind of pattern and behavior is acceptable, if anything, you are re-enforcing that notion that there are a group of jobs, not just one, where failure is overly tolerated.

You've provided more examples to make my point, thank you.
  15. MaestroM Augur

Yes. There are a lot of very complicated highly specialized jobs/industries where no matter how careful or prudent you can be, sometimes stuff just doesn't work.

    Total fail

You don’t spend extra money on servers for a single day problem. That’s why every MMO has this problem, that’s why they will continue having the problem.

Just wait until Shadowlands launches and Blizzard fans have their meltdown....this happens every year.

I work in continuous improvement. Part of my job is to prioritize which company processes/problems to fix first. Our KPIs targets that help analyze things are built based on customer acceptable results, not perfection. So for example, while in a perfect world there would be no defects in our service, it’s understood and accepted that sometimes things happen.

We base improvement off of where we will see the biggest return and the best business value. Sure, we can spend a million dollars to achieve a sigma level 6 defect rate, but our customers were ok with sigma 3...

I was just talking to a friend about this today. Dark paw obviously knows what to expect from a TLP launch. It isn’t poor planning or bad employees, it more likely just smart business. Why spend the money and time on resolving this issue if you’re not really losing anything... because honestly, how many people leave because of these TLP launch issues? I’m sure they have the data to show that regardless of if they spent the resources to make a launch smooth, they wouldn’t gain enough to create a return.
