Hi! I've tried to do low level enchanter research last week and noticed (on Mangler) and noticed I didn't get any Tasarin page drops. So I started looking for them. I searched lots of merchants of Kelethin, Felwithe, LFay, Butcherblock, Freeport, Commons, SRo, Grobb, Neriak and everything in between. Not a single page showed up. Same for the Velishoul pages. What I did find was Salis writs and lots of Nilitims. So - did anyone see any Tasarin or Velishoul pages or is the enchante research broken? Kind regards MetaByte
I believe everything is switched to the new style research http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/article_page.php?article=g342 Sometimes the old stuff does drop, it is just vendor fodder as the old system no longer works. Something like the first 30 or so levels are vendor bought components and you have to start farming seriously above that. Starting research is all about hides now and the first three types are available on vendors.
Unless you are dead set on being self reliant or just want to be an ultra completionist I would avoid raising Research at this point. It's a huge plat sink with very little chance of giving you even remotely back what you have to put in.
Ok so the progression server have their "old" content broken and the "new" one is spilling over with receipts that are mainly on EQ traders. What's the deal with the hides then? For example: http://www.eqtraders.com/items/show.../show_item.php?item=8577&menustr=080105000000 states that a cleaned hide is needed that needs a raw hide that is obtainable in crescent reach..? The crude hide from the merchant is makable but does not work with the receipt.. Actually I want my AE mez and my 6 second point blank stun -.-
Buying them from EC Tunnel or the auction channel are you best bets. Hides are dropped by caster mobs of similar level to the spell. Anywhere there is caster mobs 16-20ish. It will also take about 80pp 100 saltpeter and 60 crystallized sulfur to skill up enough to where you want to start making spells 1-20 Trainer 21-54 Vial of pure water (save these) Then make Oil of Vitrol on success use these to make Aqua Fortis until 102. Past 102 spell research gets really expensive
hehe, Just made my level 22 water pet spell on Mangler. Commiseration, because anyone with Research Skill has so much pp to recoup, nothing but the most profitable spells are made. What I did was slummed it: I took one of my higher level characters to farm zones that had the drops I needed. Cart/horse thing where the Magician couldn't solo in the zones where the hides I needed for the pet spell could be farmed without that pet. Since everyone crowds into a couple of popular zones now, no way you will get a group where you need it. Normally I just try to power though rough spots like that but didn't feel like it this time around. What I did was go to eq traders to find the componets I needed for the spell http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/article_page.php?article=g83&menustr=080105000000 then went to Allakhazam http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=51512 and typed it into the search which leads to MOBs that drop it. My Druid travels A LOT! So essentially every time I saw a hide on a vendor I right clicked it to check level. They will say something like "Reccomended level 34. Required level 30." Buy everything that is at or above the spell level you need. As was mentioned, some of the stuff you need to advance the skill like Saltpeter is a PIA to buy or farm. It is an infrequent drop off a low level MOB in Lavastorm which is one of my least favorite zones. Another way of obtaining rare drops or spells is to go to http://tlpauctions.com/ and search there. You find what you want and take the name of the seller down, then contact them in game. Kind of a meta game going on with Spell Research. Really breaks immersion, just no other practical way to do it in a timely fashion.
Crude Hide is not the same as Raw Hide (which is what is required to make that spell. That EQTraders does not have a full listing of mobs is not surprising, as literally any caster in that level range should have a chance to drop a Raw Hide. You can look at Alla for ideas: http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=52026 But I'll echo the above advice -- rather than spending the time and effort to raise your own skill at this point in the server's life, go to Commonlands and /auc wtb low level enchanter research spells and you'll probably get a hit, or wtb services of any spell researcher. Skilling it yourself will either take a ton of materials that you can certainly farm yourself or find on city vendors -- or a lot of plat -- or both.
