My Shadow Knight - Glaurung - Iksar.... was level 14 when a server merge happened. I received NO email from Verant or Sony or Daybreak, whomever it was that I was going to lose my name or that names would be destroyed during the server merge. Some guy who was X levels higher than my Iksar was named Glaurung on Povar. He got preference. My Iksar got renamed to Glaurungxx THAT FOOL HAS NOT BEEN ON EVERQUEST FOR OVER 10 YEARS! Apparently there's a name bot that has had undisrupted attendance on the servers to see who has been on and off in that time... so this jerk has my name and doesn't even play any more. I want to play my Iksar with my name. So yes, gimme my name back! LET ME RECLAIM IT IN A BATTLE TO THE DEATH! XD In all seriousness, this naming stuff is bs. Daybreak needs to fix it. Nao.
Well ... the rule for names usually was: - logged in within the last 60 days - if that doesn't solve it -> most time played gets the name With your character having 2 x's there have been two other characters taking precedence over yours. No idea if CS will be able to assist you with this - but if you got auto-renamed you usually have /changename available to set a new name. This is from the latest server mergers:
Nah, it was just last May 2020. But there was 3 months notice. But since he is referring to Sony - well they sold out in '15 and Verant was original so 1999. But merges were in 2005, 2010 and 2017 Entitlement.
To be fair, back in Kunark even level 14 could take a while. Not everyone was power-levelling back then... sometimes just exploring was all you needed to have fun... What would happen if you made 8 chars on each server with the names: xxx xxxx xxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx
The time he spent writing this thread is the equivalent amount of time to reserve the name on all other servers.
Ah, I didn't pay attention to the OP name. (that's how important names are ) but yeah, he just returned to the game a few weeks ago so ............
While the original post is somewhat silly, it does highlight a relatively minor yet somewhat annoying situation. Yes, one could argue that there is an infinite amount of names you can choose. And yes, there are "risks" when one transfers to another server as far as names go. But as someone who has felt the necessity to switch servers in the past for a variety of reasons, I have experienced the situation where the name that my character has had since February 2000 is not available. And while I will never say a word to a current or more recently retired player since that individual could always return... a server that has Cicely taken by a level 34 dwarf that has not logged in since April 2006 and is tied to an account that no longer pays for the service as well as the account as a whole has not logged in since April 2006... Well, i think it is safe to say after 15 years that account (and that character) is not coming back. In which case, the name Cicely should become available to the account that has paid for 20 plus years and whose character has over 700 days played. Or available to anyone in general on a FCFS basis.
I am also curious how you obtained all that info on someone else's character? The part about then the dwarf last logged in etc
