DAYBREAK GAME COMPANY EXPANDS G.I.R.L. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TO TWO SCHOLARSHIPS
Application Process Now Open for Art & Design and Programming & Engineering Scholarships

The submission process is now open for Daybreak Game Company's 2015 Gamers In Real Life (G.I.R.L.) Game Design Competition. This year, for the very first time, Daybreak’s G.I.R.L. scholarship program will award two winners. One scholarship will be focused on Art & Design, and the other on Programming & Engineering. Each winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship to be applied toward tuition, room and board, and other educational expenses at their college or university. Additionally, the winners will have the opportunity to participate in a summer internship at Daybreak’s headquarters in San Diego for hands-on experience working on some of the company’s award-winning games.

This is the eighth year that the G.I.R.L. scholarship program will help aspiring game developers gain knowledge and skills in the video game design field, and provide valuable assistance for educational expenses. Since 2008, G.I.R.L. winners have gone on to make a valuable impact across the gaming and art industries.

“Previous internship contributions from G.I.R.L. winners have been nothing short of excellent, which played a key part in our decision to evolve the scholarship even further,” said Laura Naviaux, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Daybreak Game Company. “We’re thrilled that we can provide two students the opportunity this summer to learn more about creating online games, while helping to shepherd new talent into the industry.”

Submissions for the 2015 G.I.R.L. Game Design Competition will close on April 9, 2015. To apply, candidates must register with Scholarship America®, Daybreak's scholarship administrator, and submit their application for evaluation. Complete details are available at https://www.scholarsapply.org/gamersinreallife.

This might be a dumb question, but does one have to be a woman to apply?

No, anyone can apply for the program.

Will this still go forward, with everything else being affected? Can a graduate get a job with Daybreak?

What do you mean, will this still go forward? This is for the 2015 program - yes, this is active and will take place this year.

Students who have already graduated are not eligible to apply for this program. You must be a US resident currently enrolled in a college or university and be majoring in a field related to video games.

For the concept artwork, must it be drawn? Or could I use creations in say Landmark to be my "3D Concept Art"? Drawing is not my specialty and I am just getting into the programming side of things this semester so that side of it won't work for me currently.

I am confused about the Programming category.

So, say - I want to implement a feature for Planetside 2... but Planetside 2 code is not available publicly. For a feature to work it will also require an example map in that game... but the editor is not available either.
The only thing available - to my knowledge - is an API to pull statistics from Planetside 2, but that won't be helpful.

Thus I don't really see a way to do what you ask, because there is no way to integrate my code into your game.
I could write in pseudocode but that would be utterly useless for you.

Since it's not available publicly, you can use the code base of your choice. We checked with some of the Developers internally, and they said using something like Unity would be fine. Focus on the caption elements when you do submit your code:

We don't need to be able to integrate it directly. We're looking at the design aspect -- what is your idea, and how would you implement it into the game.

For art, you can use any visual means available to you to get your idea across. While traditionally concept art is drawn or painted digitally, you're welcome to explore other mediums. What's important is that the ideas are good, and that they're demonstrated clearly.

From one of our artists: "If you plan to be a concept artist, then good color palettes and interesting shapes are pretty important. If your forte is in modeling, then make the best, most interesting model you can. If you enjoy building with Voxels, then go for it!"

    Hope that helps.
