[Suggestion] Why is this game set in the future?

Where are the goddamn bathrooms? Seriously, I can't even keep a track of the clone memories of me trying to find an out of the way corner to take a dump before getting ganked by an infiltrator. Or run over by a Mag-mower(damn electric engines, so quiet) At least I can pee in the stairwells(yeah, it was me) in relative safety. The funniest place to take care of business is at the teleporters or jump pads. Who's problem is this teleporting/jump padding Mr. Hanky? Not mine. Best when the adjacent facility is owned by a different faction.

Guys, I hear what you're saying and I completely agree... but this thread is not actually about realism. Take a look:
It's all good, man. Hope you feel better. :)

It might as well be WW2.

Anyone here subscribe to the Multiverse theory, the DC Universe Lex Luther Family Guy mumble jumbo. What makes you think the Planetside universe is the same as ours, year number is just a number, what really matter is the events that occur in the past to shape our future, maybe they didn't research bio weapons, or smart guidance bullets, if the Chinese didn't bother to invent gun powder then we might still be fighting with sticks and stones in the year 9000 if no one bothered to research more because future =/= technological advancements because tomorrow all of the world's nuclear weapons could go off and set us back into the stone age but we'd still be in the future because future is a relevance of time.

TL, DR : Multiverse theory, Planetside set in another universe. Future is a relevance of time not technological advancement.

The same reason George Lucas chose to model the x-wing battles in Star Wars on WW2 dogfights - because it just looks/works better.

If the game was truly modelled after technology that may be available hundreds of years into the future - infantry and vehicle combat would probably look nothing like it does now. Tank battles are a rare thing these days. So too is dog fighting - most military aircraft engage from a distance (in some cases hundreds of miles). We already have unmanned drones, cruise missiles etc.

The game is set in the future because it gives flexibility around things like flight mechanics, hover tanks, lasers, nanites etc - yet follows old school infantry and tank combat principles - because it's more fun. 40K uses a similar principle - but the lore is more developed around why that is the case (i.e. in the 40K universe - they are using mostly outdated technology, relics than cannot be replicated - there is very little technological advancement).

Current military trends are moving more and more to long range, targeted, surgical engagement and remote engagements - taking the soldier well away from the battle. Pitched infantry and vehicle battles are getting rarer and this trend will only continue into the future. This is the complete antitheses of Planetside 2 gameplay where both infantry and vehicles are infinitely replaceable and therefore infinitely expendable.

How fun would Planetside 2 be if the first time you got killed - it was permanent, the game uninstalled itself and wouldn't let you reinstall........ever. That is the reality of infantry combat in today's world.

Forget the Vanguard. I'd settle for an "ancient" M1 Abrams or any "ancient" equivalent any day. Forget the high tech nanite HE shells. WW1 shells will do just fine for me. Oh man ESFs? xD Give me a MiG 21 with the best "ancient missiles" it could equip and I'll blow you all out of the sky.

The fact that our pre-modern tech can actually outperform anything in this game is like a situation where bows and arrows can take down a F 22.

Ah, but you can't deploy large scale nukes without killing friendlies and getting weapon locked! ;)
