Why Does the Harrasser Need a Gunner?

Sort of confused about this point. In a game that has MBT pilots controlling the cannons, why does a buggy with no meaningful transport capabilities require a gunner to operate the weapons?

The Sunderer has defined gunner roles by virtue of its purpose being (in theory) an infantry transport first, a mobile spawn point second, and a weapons platform third. It is supposed to be escorted and guarded by vehicles with heavier hitting weapons; the in built weapons are there to act as deterrents against lone attackers. MBT and Lightning pilots both control their vehicles' primary weapons while driving, with MBTs having a secondary weapon to diversify or suppliment their role on the field. Flash drivers also get to operate their own guns, even though the vehicle is purely transport and scouting.

Every combat-oriented vehicle has driver controlled weapons; it's inconsistent for a vehicle that could not conceivably fill any other role to not follow suit. I appreciate that this lends itself well to teamplay, and I'm of the opinion that tanks should have gunners, but the Harrasser in its current form requires one more person than a Main Battle Tank to operate effectively in combat.

The real title of this thread should be:
When will MBTs finally get multi-crewed ?

But hey, one man can dream.

cos not ALL vehicles needed to be designed to solo players.

Whats that mister Liberator? You want a word with this person? But you have a nose gun! Clearly that's what you're for right?

Not all vehicles are the same and people have been wanting a driver/gunner vehicle since beta. If I can drive around like a lunatic while my friend focuses on killing, we'll both do a lot better at our jobs. Besides, it's for fun! If you want a fast soloable vehicle use the lightning. If you want something with punch, use the MBT, if you want to be carefree and have fun, use the buggy!

SOE should just suck up their pride and admit they were wrong with the one-man MBT's and give them dedicated gunners already. "It will be more fun" Smedley said. Yeah. Great.

Nowadays MBT's are more fun for sure. It's completely unfun getting blown up a long cooldown tank 1000 times a row because random gunners just won't work. They will reveal your position by failing 1000 shots against dalton libs among other things instead of remaining stealth, never read or answer on chat etc. They just work with a dedicated gunner that you know well and is as skilled as you are, while using skype/ventrilo/teamspeak because ingame voip has just too much delay for such a low TTK fps game.. Also will just work when that person is online AND wants to gun for you, meaning just 15 people per server will make real use out of it.

I watched recently the Twitch stream of the person with most kills on vehicles in the world. He was alone 90% of the time. He even went with liberators as 1/3. That is how most people play this game and how the person who kills with vehicles the most also plays. Even this majesty can't have a dedicated gunner that lives and breathes just to follow him. That's my point.

Never. This game ground vehicles physics and driving poses no challenge to make it fun. If at least you got the main barrel like you do now at least is more fun. If you find driving and shooting at the same time difficult you might as well never play WoW or any game that requires 50 keybinds.
Also the big error about all this crew nonsnse is that certain PS1 vets put the "teamwork" lie as an excuse.
Teamwork should be about player coordination, not about excluding 90% of the population from enjoying a vehicle because it requires dedicated nerd slaves to follow you every time you want to play. On any game I have played, if I'm skilled with X weapon and I face a more "teamworking" enemy group, I want to make sure that If at least I spot an isolated enemy of those, my individual skills will be able to take him down even if I get killed afterwards by their friends. This gets broke when they have access to use weapons/equipment that I can't use because I have no friends like they do.

Same weapons for everyone. Let players/squads/platoons coordination be the only source of teamwork that makes the difference. It's already very noticeable. Let driving skills for an NFS game.

    Lightning = solo tank
    MBT = Crew tank
    It's not hard.

I mean hell, some of these weapon options are crazy. Halberd, Fury, and Walker will all be common use, AA MAXes on the back...

these things are screaming death machines

They'd be stupid OP if they were solo capable

Not really. I imagine they'll be pretty easy to blow up.

"When will MBTs finally get multi-crewed ?"

    Now.
If you don't notice it, MBT's can already take two guys, with some very powerful and useful weapons for the secondary gunner.
In fact, what you want is not multi-crewed MBT's (they are already in the game), what you want is to remove the gun aiming from the tank drivers.

That's a game design I don't like: MBT shouldn't be solo-vehicles. They should be 3 crew vehicles: 1 driver, 2 gunners, like Prowler in PS1.

Tip of the day: Engineer on rumble seat can repair the vehicle without dismounting ;)
At least, ths is working for Flash, it will probably work on Harasser.

"...because random gunners just won't work..."

Random gunners I take are either:

1: a guy who just wants a taxi and who will leave his post empty when I would need him to defend my tank.
2: or a guy who get bored and who waists my ammo against trees or anything I see.
3: or a guy who will shot at ESF's when I'm trying to go stealth.
4: or a guy who can't aim well, what it's especially annoying because, alone, I've nevertheless a little chance of surviving when I use myself the Walker.
5: a guy who will steal my tank, when I'm out for repairing it.

And I cant perfectly imagine the pain of a guy using my main turret, when I drive, because of the coordination problems and by nature slowness of giving orders and executing them.

Concept of "fun" for the multi-crewed tank "elite":

Then get someone reliable to play with or drive the lightning tank, which is meant for solo players.
  16. CHDT65

"Then get someone reliable to play ..."

1: I've a life outside the game, I cannot plan two weeks ahead an appointment with a caddie turret boy for playing.
    2: I've no caddie boy.
    3: I don't want to be a caddie boy.

And 99% of the players are like me.
That's why SOE made it this way.
For the majority, not for the 1% of old couples and masta/serva duos.

The problem is if you give it a diver gun then you run into one of two problems. Either it is a heavy flash if you make it 2 man or it threatens to have more firepower than a tank if you make it 3 man, all with guns. The current 3 man model seems to avoid those problems. Since it looks to have armor made of glass and TNT driving is also going to be a far more involved job than tank driving. Rather than reverse back over the crest of the hill you sitting on when you need to rep, you'll be driving like a crazy person avoid everything you can.
  18. Harbinger

If solo play is your thing, then you should play with the solo tank: the Lightning.
Jesus Christ, it's not hard to understand, is it?

Btw, twin-tanks are already very powerful, a two-men Magrider, with two AP guns, is for instance some kind of unbeatable beast.
So, I really don't understand the "booooohhh, gimme me multi-crew tanks" whiners as:

1: multi-crewed tanks are already in the game.
2: they can be very powerful, in fact much more powerful than solo tanks (in my Vanguard, I avoid the twin-Magriders as the pest as I know they are über-lethal).

If duo play is your thing, just use your MBT with a friend.
Big news, it's not a coming feature, it's already in the game.
