Why did the bolt catch go extinct?

    i was being snarky.

that said, the density of lead is on the order of 11g/cm^3, tungsten is 19.2g/cm^3, and Depleted uranium is in the neighborhood of 19.1

terrestial plasmas are often so rarified that the most meaningful unit to measure densities in is particles/cm3. i.e. functionally insignificant for consideration in this discussion.
to use the average density of say, the sun as a reference, you'd be looking at 1.4g/cm^3. (with the core being orders of magnitude MORE massive, and the corona being just about as ephemeral as the terrestrial plasmas)

or roughly an order of magnitude lighter than a lead, tungsten, or DU projectile. (and slightly more dense than purified water, which is 1g/cm^3)
meaning that their recoil should be minuscule compared to the TR or NC

    but they aren't. so...
either it's game balance thing, or the VS engineers decided to ignore the fact that we are using superheated gasses at temperatures that literally vaporize organic protein structures (BAD JUJU) and compress the plasma so that the density approximates that of a traditional lead/tungsten bullet

    newtons third law of motion

NC guns have an ejection port presumably because they still have a bolt and it needs to be able to re-**** in case a round jams, not for ejecting brass, but just to make sure that things work correctly
  3. Metallic123

Only thing I can think of is to clear the chamber for whatever reasons. Weapon jam or to render condition four?

Why did frodo not take an eagle to mount doom?
  4. Ayre

    1) NC gauss rifles have ejection ports for the same reason real caseless firearms do: Jams. What are you supposed to do if it jams and you can't eject it, take it apart on the battlefield?

    2) Gauss weapons are not frictionless and are not exempt from the laws of physics; there would be recoil.

    3) Legitimate question.

Wiki "Coil Gun" and "Rail Gun". If it helped me clear a few things up it certainly can help you, knowing so much about weapons as you claim to. I risk sounding offensive but I assure you, I don't mean to offend. It's an interesting read either way, having gone through it all quite a few things make more sense to me.

One thing to consider, regarding VS weapons having recoil... Soft Point, how do they have it? Why is it called that? Change the name and it would make sense though, as a feature, an option. It could have a fancy name and an explanation about heating, heat dissipation, containment methods, I don't know. So what I'm getting at is... Perhaps it's not "Recoil" though it uses this name just like it's not Soft Point, but rather a measure of how difficult it is to operate the weapon, how it behaves when fired(Perhaps... It vibrates. No pun intended), the behaviour resembling and resulting in, well, the weapon kicking a little bit as it cooks and fires Plasma, right there in your arms. In fact, several VS weapons have a lot of moving parts like heat vents or small pistons(If that's how those are called) and such and by the way they move, those weapons might present a bit of difficulty in keeping them 100% steady. Does this make any sense? I wouldn't find it completely unlikely, a bit far fetched but then so are a lot of things PS2. Besides this is not yet "Vanu" level tech, it's what Humans created with what materials they had available, BASED ON Vanu tech and what they could translate from it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually(Ironically since the Vanu shun puny Human tech and all) a mix of Human/Vanu tech, the Human elements used to bridge the missing information.

Whatevz, might all be BS I came up with but it's at least one theory about that if we definitely don't want to resort to "Nanites" or "Game" or "You have better things to do".

    :)

The VS weapons look like this in an attempt to make them look more intimidating? Or stylish? I mean if the VS worship the old Vanu civilization and found images or symbols or other shapes used by them, they'd definitely try to incorporate them in their designs.
  6. Wobberjockey

because that would have denied Tolkien about 2000 pages to show off all the cool languages he created.
  7. Kurohagane

I think they simply use the coils to accelerate the bullets.

That's not how the universe works.

Join Vanu to find out more!

How do you know they don't look like deadly, handheld plasma-spewing battery fed killing devices? Have you ever seen one for real? Yeah, thought as much. Foolish freedom fighter.
  8. Metallic123

Exactly. Sometimes when things don't make sense they do so for a reason.

    Because; <-source->

While on the subject of bolts; <-source->
In other words, gauss rifles and railguns don't need bolts because they don't use chemical propellants.

And while gauss rifles won't have any chemical propellants taking up space in the magazine, you need electricity to power the gun which would need to be contained in the magazine. (unless you want your gun to stop functioning after a certain # of magazines)
  10. Booface

Heheh all valid except this. Conservation of momentum says if it has force one way, it exerts force in the other, regardless of anything else. Real world railguns also have recoil, by the way. Tons of it. Check out the ones they're mounting on US Navy ships in the coming years. Solid tungsten slugs that travel so fast their exterior turns molten on the way to the target, and can turn a tank or compound into dust with nothing but the liberal application of kinetic energy. They have a kick that would tear lesser boats to pieces after one or two firings. I read that dealing with that kick was one of the biggest design challenges (next to giving the thing enough juice).

Because this game was made by computer programmers, not gunsmiths.
  12. Badname707

Because this game is essentially WWII in space? Think about it, the most similar war to this game in about every way imaginable is WWII. When we think 'massive war', we think WWII. It's what we want, even if we want our space guns. Sure, they have guns that can hit targets a mile away, but who wants to fight in space Iraq?

the ejectionport, is due to the NC using conventional ammunition (yes yes no ejecting brass is just a graphical thing) as there are some points where the ammunition is viewable inside the magazine in all its cased glory

the flavour states that the NC use conventional weapons, that they experimentally added acceleration coils to give slightly more umpff
this can be seen on many of the NC weapons as the coils and mag-effects are only produced around the barrel and muzzle and not at the breach (ref: jackhammer, gauss compact S)

they recoil cause force forwards = force backwards

and vanu, theres a bunch of hippy physics somewhere in the forums stating how plasma on exposure to air causes rapid expansion in the barrel etc etc causing recoil, but i like to pretend that the vanu just fire really fast particles, and due to the special theory of relativity as they approach the speed of light they exponentially gain mass, hence the large recoil(see: newton 3rd), and i suppose time dilation at said speed explains the pathetic vanu velocity? :p

    Conservation of momentum.
  15. Shatara

    1. Because animators think racking a charging handle looks cooler than slapping a boltcatch. Also, boltcatches aren't universal.
    2. Clearing malfuctions? Semi-cased ammo?
    3. You fail physics forever. The recoilless railgun myth needs to die already.
    4. Because Lord Xenu demands it?

I thought it being magnetically propelled forward would make a frictionless object making it move forward much like a maglev but I cant argue with the sources you guys cited.

As for the ejection port being a jam deterrent that just doesn't make sense, lets go over a few common jamming issues that a ejection port would solve and see why they will not be a problem in a ceaseless Gauss rifle.

    Stove piping
it wont happen cause no case

    failure to cycle
the Gauss rifle does not depend on gasses from the spent propellant so its safe the assume the rounds are cycled electronically with the power from the rifle. If there is not enough power to cycle the chamber then there is not enough power to fire the rifle a second time meaning the entire battery needs to be replaced.

    failure to feed
A failure to feed is caused by the mag and is fixed by clearing the mag well and rocking the charging handle letting the unspent ammo fall out of the mag well.

So there is still no reason to have a ejection port and the missing bolt catch is still a mystery.
  18. zombieslore

Why do the battle cup wearing spandex experience reoil, because many of you are not soldiers that can handle a regular gun properly, hence, the research. Clear stated in the lore, Vanu are mainly scientist, TR are the military, and NC are insurgents.

Remember, the devs are from SoCal, guns are probably not something they have contact with on a regular basis.
  20. MrMurdok

Why don't 150mm high explosive tank shells take down buildings?

How do short reloads (remaining ammo in the magazine goes to the total ammo pool) work for VS? TR and NC would make sense because you could remove rounds from your half empty magazines and refill other mags, but what in Vanu's name does the VS do?

F***ing NS-7, how does it work?!

In their description, Hunter Stealth and Nano-Armor, and Stalker Cloak say they 'bend light around the Infiltrator', how does that prevent me from being detected by thermal scopes on vehicles?

Why would anyone bring a crossbow to a gun fight?

Your energy shields are able to withstand the impact force of multiple gunshots and plasma bursts, yet they're depleted when you're hit by a crossbow bolt. Wat?
