Why are jetpacks silent?

You can hear them but hey are indeed pretty quiet. Definitely more quieter than an infiltrator cloaking noise.

You can hear them form a very short distance, if nothing else is making any sound and you are listening for them.

Other than that they are effectively silent (certainly much more quiet than footsteps, reloading, cloaking and even ambient sounds).

I've never really considered it before, but this must be a bug, Jetpacks could be TWICE as loud as they currently are and they would still be extremely quiet.

I use sound very often as an important input where stuff happens. I really never hear LAs, if there's a sound I don't even know what it is. I can distinguish the ambient clicking, whirring and thumping machines in buildings do from a sneaking enemy but I can't locate LAs by sound.

I disagree with reducing the volume of the infiltrator's cloak down however. Reducing its radius ok, I think that one is too large but the sound isn't too loud when one is only a few meters away. Now most people see those two things (radius and volume) as the same thing I guess but it isn't. Imagine it like a grenade/explosives radius vs. damage value and you should see what I mean.

I can hear his jetpack fine too. Even on my cheap *** 2.1 speakers. When using my headset LA's are easy to track around towers etc.

The difference is, a jetpack makes noise constantly when in use, but a cloak only makes noise when going in an out of cloak. So:
Jetpack = LA is right here, right now, come kill him
Cloak = there was a cloaker over there come and try find the invisible bastard while he waits till he's behind you to shred you with an SMG.

If cloaks were more quiet but made noise constantly while in use I personally would find them less useful.

Cloaks are probably fine as they are.

Jetpacks being quieter than footsteps, cloaking, even reloading your weapon probably isn't fine as it is.

The question should not be "should jetpacks be silent?" but rather "Does LA need a nerf?" and in my opinion he answer to that question is no.

    BAAHAHAHAH!! Good joke.

Agree. LA has already received three indirect nerfs that are dont' affect other classes much.

    1. Windows placed on certain buildings to prevent vehicle spam shelling.
    2. Death fields encompassing spawn buildings.
    3. C4 removal upon respawning.

Jet packs are fine. Learn to look up every once in a while or behind you if you're perched on a "safe" cliff (such as the Crown cliff facing Zurvan). That particular cliff is an excellent place for me to get multiple kills before someone wizens up. I'll agree the inf cloaking volume could be reduced.

The SMGs for NC are almost identical to some of Vanu's carbines as far as damage per bullet, clip size, RoF, etc.

    Jetpcks silent = False.
    Cloaking loud = True.

Well, if jetpacks continue to remain as silent as they are I agree. I think the fact that they're so quiet is something I never considered but a pretty good point. I would actualy like to hear them more, not just so I can't get snuck up upon, but I think it would really add to the experience hearing them.

LA jetpack is the only class ability, which dont have any real downsides, like other classes:

Inf: Loud sound, easy to hear
HA: Slower moving speed and glow, easier to see, especially in dark
CM: Glowing, easier to see, especially in dark
    LA: ????

It definitely needs more noise, its a common sense of balance to be able to hear them if they fly near you.
  15. Marked4Death

Probably your speakers / EQ making the difference there.

    Why are jetpacks silent?

    Nanites!
  17. Goretzu

    Nothing is impossible,

However I can't really think of rational explanation as to why my set up would make PS2 jetpacks quiet and yet produce the correct level of sound for everything else (in PS2 and every other sound the system makes).

Occum's razor suggests it is just that PS2 jetpack are exceedingly quiet, almost silent in fact.
  18. Nocturnal7x

Not working as intended. Time for a change :D
  19. vaxx

I was not aware HA's move slower than everyone else....

Ever used a jetpack? You do glow, especially at night.

    Using C4?
