When will SOE live up and make water battles

They promise things all the time and I think the next continent needs to include this.

In Planetside 1 we were driving across water and fighting all the time to avoid a bridge choke point.

THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE as one of the many priorities or this game will die fast

Water seems to be like doors, inventories and worldwide minimum downtime; glories of the past no longer achievable in the present day. :(

It's like the fall of Rome all over again. :D
  3. Ribero

I never really understood the hype behind water and naval warfare.

Can't happen with current render distance system.

It'll just be a wall of complaints.
  5. gigastar

Probably some time after they fix everything that they broke trying to fix everything that they broke trying to fix something.
  6. vsae

    Never
    Or in Planetside 3

Anyway, back to being peasant in swtor.
  7. KenDelta

Maybe in 2 years , when the game is stable and ground battles aren't broken.

D_carey said water would be too difficult to make. Second, there would have to be whole new continents made for it, which takes about 2 years each and lots of vehicles made which takes about 6 months each.
  9. FateJH

So, what would be the purpose of naval warfare in Planetside 2?

I still think D_carey is overestimating the technical complexities a bit; however, map design would be a significant issue, yes. Excepting Ceryshen and Ascension, most PS1 bases (and ground) were near sea level. Most PS2 continents are irregular in elevation.
  10. Pikachu

Sail around the continents where other people have restricted area. To check out the corners of the map.
  11. Nurath

Water provides a fun obstacle/strategic element.

Remember in Planetside 1 when you'd be defending a bridge and then a column of Magriders would try and flank your position?

    Exciting!

TBF they don't need to make new maps, maybe add lakes into the current noes or extend out the restricted areas so you can do waterborne flanks.
  12. Saber15

I don't think they ever promised water battles, more like "This is something we'd like to do given enough time and money"
Same for the airborne aircraft carriers.

There is no proper water model in the game. They would have to completely redo that part to make naval warfare a thing. That's a rather large chunk of code to write. The only water in the game right now is just a texture and nothing more.
  14. IrishPride

Water is non-essential when nanites could bring you back to life anyways :p

Want to know why? Spend some time thinking of the shooter with the best naval combat you can think of. You'll realize almost nobody is doing this, and when they do it's average at best. While on the flip side (and the reason almost nobody is doing naval combat) it's actually quite costly to implement all the associated systems in a way that's fun and feels right.

I don't actually think it's an impossible idea, but it's tremendously expensive to take a risky shot at hopefully being average (and quite likely being below average.)
  16. OpolE

Well it worked with Planetside 1 well so looks like Planetside 2 is **** then haha
  17. Bixli

...oh dear , yes ..reminds me of the good ol' bf42 times , drivin' n 'gunnin' with destroyers & aircraft carriers ..ton of fun it was. (no ..i don't like bf2 & i hate bf3 , 4 , 5 ..10 btw). so ..there were naval, aerial & ground combat with easily doing & handling ..simple but excellent gameplay. maybe it's just me , but every further new year of computer gaming history where arrive us brings games out worse and worse.

    i want a submarine
  19. FateJH

Pshaw. All you need is a flat geometric surface (or a cube, if you need volume), a texture, and the ability to tell which side of it you are on or how much of you is on which side (we have hitboxes for that). After that, it's all bits of code here and there for drowning or being slowed down or checking whether we have a hitbox for floating. I'm not asking for advanced surface tension or volumetric flow modelling or a swimming animation because none of that matters.

It's just the planning and modelling that's going to take forever. And, naval warfare still needs a purpose in the grand scheme of things that's not just tacked on as hasty justification.

Right now the game feels like it is one big mishmash of things that have been tacked on :(
