What do I need to do to run PS2 smoothly?

Don't laugh I worked hard to save up to build this. It's not bad, it's just it could be better. I'm thinking processor though. Sorry for all the unneeded info

Have self-control, to keep yourself from bashing through the monitor in fury over performance issues.

Your system is very close to mine. Even have the same odd amount of ram lol

Recently after playing through far cry 3 at max settings I thought to myself, wow I'm probably going to get a couple more years out of this old girl.

And then I played Planetside 2... It's nothing but poor cpu optimization with this game, but if you've got $500+ for new cpu+mobo+ram to stop big fights from being choppy, then go for it :p

Newest I5/I7 oc'ed to around 4,5 GHz, some medium to high range graphics card

    Luck. Plain, dumb, luck.

I am going to quote what multiple people have tried to tell me "Omg, your a ****wit you need a better PC, DUH!"

But on the serious side, if you need to be upgrading/changing anything it should be the GFX card, even if you got the Nvidia equivelant the GTX 280 (I don't know why the text went funny), but this depends on whether you are CPU or GPU limited, for $100 you could get a C2Q, I myself, own an even worse PC then you... (E4700, GT610,2gb ram) and before I get anything else it will be a processor (ALWAYS CPU limited), $100 may seem like quite a bit, but the improvement will be huge!
EDIT: Before you do anything, try overclocking.

I hate people like you, thinking people like us just have money to throw around on crap like that, if we had that kind of money, we would not be here asking how to make it better.

OK, seeing as you are hostile to sugestions of buying a gaming rig to replace your homework PC, i think there are 2 things you can do to aid your framerate, reduce the detail to "low" and reduce the resolution as low as is practical.

I'm sorry there is not much else you can do. This game is right on the bleeding edge of what MMOFPS games can do (you only have to see the Forgelight engine on Ultra setting to see what i mean), and as such is a massive drain on even decent hardware. I would ignore people who try and convince you that your woes all reside with the graphics card, as this game punishes weak CPUs (anything below 3GHz quadcore starts to show the strain) much more than it does weak graphics cards. Don't waste £150 on a new graphics card only to find your CPU is still a huge bottleneck and the weak link in your system.

I heard this game doesn't use multithreading and only makes use of a single core somewhere... that true? Looking to build a rig to rock this game later this year. However if it won't help to get a 6 core processor then why even bother.

    Ignore this guy completely.

OC a computer that low specs will do one of two things, 1) Not make a damn bit of difference or 2) Burn the crap out of your system if you do it too much.

You also can't just throw in a new GPU.

If you buy a new GPU, you're either going to have to go low end, again, not making too much of a difference (just slight) and again, do 1 of 2 things. 1) Have it bottlenecked by the CPU and 2) Blow your PSU.

If you want a new GPU you're most likely going to need a new PSU too (Honestly, I'm ill, I can't even remember if you stated what it was despite reading it two seconds ago) and then you'll want a new CPU, especially with PS2's optimization. IIRC you had 6gig RAM, strange number, but you could bump it up to 8. Not sure how cheap RAM is atm.

Honestly, I'm sorry to say this, but upgrading that computer won't be enough, it will probably end up costing you more than it's worth. You'll either be bottlenecking, burning out your PSU, or constantly adding to it for what, another year before needing to do it again?

Your best bet is to save up and buy a whole new computer. You won't need a mouse/keyboard/monitor (or, maybe you do need a monitor, again, I forgot what you had :p) but depending on how you go about it, you can get a whole new one for not much more than upgrading that one. You don't even need a super duper one, you can get a budget one fairly cheap, especially if you ignore places like PC world or wholesale dealers that you see advertised on TV. There's a few good specialist sites out there that can get you a computer 6-7x better for the same price than buying one at a big chain.

PS2 while good, isn't worth spending all that cash just to upgrade for it, because then you'd probably be spending cash on this "F2P" game anyway. Just go ahead and save as best you can until you can get a whole new one. Cheaper in the long run.

For records, the most expensive bit of kit in your computer should not be the GPU, or the CPU, the HDD, or the sound card. It should not be the Mobo or the RAM nor should it be a crazy amounts of cooling fans. It should always be a PSU and while most don't like the idea of spending a lot of cash on something that doesn't technically increase your performance, it's the heart of the computer if you will. The bigger the heart, the more blood you can pump through it and the less likely it's going to drop dead from a heart attack and crumbling the rest of the organs before being replaced.

Because you won't be playing PS2 for the rest of your life, and because their always working on optimisation, and it will help you multi-task anyway.

I, on the other hand, am sick of people that can't see difference between their own thoughts and interpretations and that, what someone really wrote.

I didn't suggest that You have money, nor that You should have money and throw them on new rig to play PS2.
Shrimp Mane asked for answer and he got the answer - That I consider only valid, realistic answer for his question. As for now, I doubt PS2 could run smoothly on anything slower than i5 OC'ed by at least 1GHz. Some people report good results with OC'ed Bulldozers, while other Bulldozer users still have FPS issues, so I won't recommend them. It was not my intention to insult or harm anyone - I just stated the fact. As for now, with his configuration it is just not possible to run this game smoothly.
There are many good topics here on how to improve performance, they are worth to read. After turning shadow off and making some other tweaks, PS2 will be faster, maybe even playable on his config. But never smooth.
Second thing You can do is to wait for SOE actually do something surprising about optimization of this game - what, considering effect of the last patch, will or will not happen, we can't be sure.

There it is again, some people simply do NOT have the budget to get a new PC, whether you save up or not, but yes, getting a new PC would be the best way to go. But not a lot of low end users want to get a new PC, which is why people with low end PC's hardly ever do. I agree with what you are saying about the PSU, my PSU is probably 3 generations ahead of the rest of my computer, but throwing in a new card is that simple if you don't have something like a 300W psu, which I am assuming the OP doesn't, also if you read all of my post you would have read the part that said, only if you are GPU limited, or you can get a quad fora bout $100

To the person who posted an OC'd I7.. I7-3770K here OC'd to 4.8ghz on water. HD7970 OC'd to 1375gpu/1615/mem on water... And after GU2.. Performance is worse than when I was using my old laptop with an nvidia 9800gt with GU1.

So the short answer to the OP is this.. Don't go spending a ton of money at the moment. Let SOE (hopefully) fix the issues they introduced with GU2, THEN evaluate if you want to spend money on rebuilding your system.

My decision to water cool was mostly for temp and sound issues.I live in the mountains and most houses up here don't have AC. During the summer when it hits 80, the computer GPU can get REALLLLY noisy. Even now during the winter indoors, I could barely hear the gun fire over the roar of a 6970 or a 7970.

Now.. I stick my radiator outside the window in the winter and omfg cpu temps in the 20c range and gpu in the 25c range :).
