Anyone else want to shed some light on the mentor idea? :)

While it would be nice to have a reward system, but it's not needed.
The helper system itself would be amazing to have though. I offer my assistance all the time to people who come to the forums complaining of their new player experince. Even those who have been playing, but are generally not having a good time.

These sort of attitudes are what the community needs. All these "nerf this" and "ban that" threads just showcase the lowbrow attitude that could have a negitive impact on someone for wanting to -try- the game.

    All in all:
Don't give me rewards, but do give me the option to be a beacon for new players to help them get into and enjoy the game from the moment they first drop in! (and boy do I feel guilty when I see a drop pod, and kill within 2 seconds that poor level 1...)

I think the problem (with the video) is that.. for the first 1.5minutes, you basically talk about the fact that you helped your friends better because you knew the game.

So as far as a video for *helping new people*, or that *new people should watch*, it failed there (in the sense of, lost interest.. MAYBE it got better after 1.5min in)

Now, if you're using the video to promote mentorship ideas/programs, then the video was right on the money for why mentorships work.

    Which did you intend?

I really liked this idea... although the "guide" receiving a percentage of SC spent would be a little strange I think... we might get "guides" who start pushing new players to spend SC, a result that I don't think would be a good experience. Instead, if the "guide" earns a portion of the certs that the new player gets, that might work (though obviously not as good a deal for those BR100s)

Another variation of this idea I've seen is to automatically throw new players into newbie platoons, where the platoons and squad leads are experienced players who provide guidance in exchange for many of the benefits in the video. It's less personal, but gives a more realistic squad/platoon experience rather than a one-on-one thing.

You could also have "courses", where new players can pick whether they want to experience combat, infantry support, air, or armor. Then they'd be paired up with someone who has expressed interest in teaching that "subject".

If SOE had a program like this I'd definitely volunteer!

It was mentorship programmes. Rather than them what new people should watch, as the majority of players probably don't watch youtube tutorials.

Do what EVE Online does. Allow outfits to display if they are new player friendy. My outfit does the one on one mentor thing with everybody we recruit, but there's no easy way to advertise we do that.

Outfits that are new player friendly will likely have:

    - A third party voice communication program that allows for private channels.
    - High BR players willing to be the mentor and let you learn to use and operate their certed out vehicles or to shadow to learn the infantry classes.
    - Their own internal written guides on their tactics and SOP's.

Currently I'm training another high BR player who mostly plays medic or heavy on how to be a good light assault by letting him shadow me as I play light assault.

I'm also writing an all encompassing guide on the way my outfit does everything from infantry class tactics and loadouts to vehicles and leadership. The guide follows the example and format of the Arma 3 Tactics Techniques and Procedures guide. It will also include tactics for assaulting and defending every base.

It's not an "only way to do things" guide. It's more of a how my outfit does things and this is what works for us. I'm hoping it will benefit the community once released since it's these tactics that keep every member of our outfit from creating whine threads to nerf this or buff that.

It's a collection of everything my outfit has learned about the game, from playing Planetside since release. I also hope that Sony will endorse it and help turn it into an official product once I'm finished.
