VERY IMPORTANT!!! If you own any SoE game on steam READ THIS.

And again you go off rambling - This is not a discussion about "a lot of bugs" - this is specifically about the amount of bandwidth that SOE pushes onto players. There are many ways to apply patches and some are heavier (than they need to) on the client.

And bringing in natural selection only helps further the claim that you are "in the bin" to be frank. I am not "rambling" about certain countries not having internet - If you'd take five seconds (alright five hours in your case apparantly) to actually digest the text written, you might notice we were discussing bandwidth issues for a portion of customers (and in general). Fast, unmetered internet is not a human right, it is not possible in some geographical regions due to ISP restrictions (politics and business interests) and SOE are (or should be) painfully aware of this and act as follows.

They've already shown poor professionalism in this regard with the infamous "Download the entire game from scratch" announcement back when we went from Beta to Launch - and now once more with the big upcoming "performance boost at the cost of a complete redownload" patch. In spite of the fact that all of the meshes and textures have not changed much if at all since beta - which means we - the clients are re-downloading content we already have.

Please be certain that we are absolutely aware of the download limitations that many of our customers face. It's for this reason that we have done our best to post stickies about the subject and deter people from creating situations where they end up having these large downloads again. The Steam launcher does not automatically cause this, it's user generated.

On that same note we have had numerous discussions with Steam regarding the topic on behalf of our customers and they are looking into it, but naturally we can't force them to do anything as it's their application and they control it.

To be clear here, the flaw is that their application doesn't check the right data/asset sets when running a backup or validate. So it references older data, thinks your new/current data is wrong, which then causes it to be deleted and re-downloaded.

Steam absolutely has our latest data assets at all times, it's part of our standard deployment. Our launcher and theirs share the same data sets, it's purely a flaw in the Steam application that's causing these issues.

We have additional discussions planned with them, but naturally with the holiday approaching, folks on both sides of the house have people in/out for vacation increasing the time it takes to hopefully get a resolution in place.

While I understand that some of you may feel we don't care because there's no instant gratification in getting things fixed, but I assure you we most certainly do care and we are working through issues as diligently and as quickly as we can, even though we have limited control on this particular topic.

When it comes to backing up content, I do it outside of the backup utility anyway. I suggest others do the same. Grab the corresponding NCF or ACF (usually listed as the app number), then grab the PS2 folder under common.

    Oooo... That's interesting.
  5. Freyar

So Steam's content servers have the updates? If that's the case why does the PS2 launcher do the updates? (Why have the launcher at all then?)
  6. Lethal_Sting

Perhaps SOE didn't want to set aside a team to specifically make a steam-version of the game?

That's why it's important to read the stickied threads in support forums.
http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/...avoid-the-steam-validate-files-feature.51921/ is written by the dev team. It's an issue with steam cross checking the files against a list. They will sort it out.

It's a problem with Steam's file validation. You'd think it'd be a quick fix but it still hasn't been fixed on Steam's end. Read the above link. They specifically say, don't use that for now.

The same technology is used in the backup process and you'll lose about 2.something gb of data from assets folder. For now just backup your entire game folder using windows explorer \Steam\SteamApps\Common\Planetside 2\ to a hard drive to transfer it to someone else's pc. Don't use the Steam backup feature.

Keep in mind though it copies across a file within your folder that houses your username and password!!!!! So be very careful!!! I copied my folder to my partner's pc and it automatically logged in under my details when she started the game. Had to log me out of that pc and re-log her account in. Lol

People still use steam? You people actually agreed to the new steam terms of service? idonteven

Seems strange how EVERY game with a launcher behaves this way though. This doesn't seem like a Steam issue, more an issue with people putting up MMOs and failing to get a push for their patches. With the new file system, SOE supposedly has access to push any update immediately without ValvE's involvement.

    Yes, people still use Steam.

This is "an example" one of the many reasons (Concerning choices and types of policies) (While this itself not being one) , their stock went from 50.00$ US a share to under 10.00$ US a share in less then 5 years. (Which for anyone who does marketing you know a drop like that signals the death of a company generally, OR a severe line of **** ups which have lead the company to be distrusted and hated by abused or dissatisfied customers, which leads to public knowledge that the company is **** and thus ruins and sinks their profits.)

NOTE: Planetside 2 is a step in the right direction for Sony, It is a redeeming chance for them, to show the customers they CAN do it right. And honestly they are doing a decent job fixing **** (Unlike with SWG). But don't expect them to change over night. It will take time to eradicate and fix bad policies and business practices.

Copy paste the planetside 2 folder out from steam somewhere else. All steam does is run the launchpad.exe

The launchpad does the actual file detection etc. There is no need to have it in steam and if anything steam running is just another process using some resources up even if its not much. I guess you lose the overlay for steam friends though.

I had a friend that did this the other day and he wasn't sure why 4GB was needed to redownload. Its unfortunate but SOE do know about it as its a stick in the technical support section.
  13. Fosul

The best way to deal with this and still use Steam is to just download the game from the website and link it to Steam via Add Non-Steam Game. Problem solved. You can still use Steam to play the game and not worry about validating files or insane downloads.
  14. Jestunhi

Wouldn't that mean you are reverting the client back to it's pre-patch launch day condition and backing that up, then manually re-patching?

Why backup the initial launch day client? A simple copy & paste in windows explorer will allow you to backup the current files without then having to re-download the patches.
  15. Stray Cat

Hooray for me! After months of putting up with the redeploy-freeze bug introduced in GU5, I totally ruined Planetside 2 by trying to back it up with the Steam Client, which brought me running to this thread for help. But it's about goddamned time I stopped playing this game. Good riddance.
  16. Stray Cat

Till I cave and end up downloading it again.

Friend installed the game via Steam. He learned about the game from Steam.
He ran into these issues described and ended up downloading it again from Steam.

Let him know that the non steam default install is in c:\users\public\sony online entertainment\installed games\planetside2 - He copied his folder out from the Steam install location to that location (not required)

He runs the game directly without Steam by opening the launchpad.exe
    Hasn't had an issue since.
