What ever you do DO NOT USE THE STEAM BACK UP FEATURE ON ANY SOE GAME. Apparantly backing up any SoE game using steam will compleatly destroy the game and require a full download. Good job SoE!!

    SoE meeting board:

    Dev1: "Hey I have a great idea! "

Dev2: "Oh awesome what is it? "

Dev1: "When someone chooses to back up their game files... Stay with me... we DELETE them instead? "

Dev2: "Great idea! Now we just need to make a 10GB patch to make it happen! o_O "

I've replicated this problem 3 times on 2 different computers on 2 different networks. Australian internet comes with a download limit. We cant afford to download your massive 3GB patches every week because you want to change the colour of the repair tool. We also cant afford to download entire games again because you didnt test your game on the Steam platform. For a multimillion dollar company this IS A JOKE.

that's what you get for using steam

    lol having the same issue
    sony are not smart people
  4. Raveo

No. Every other game backs up fine. Steam is not the problem here. Its SoE.

I'd say it's due to the updates being delivered by the launcher and not Steam. If you'd verify the game files in Steam, it'd go all bonkers about the files being different-- thanks to multiple gigabytes of patches that have changed most of them. I'd guess that backup also checks the integrity of the files, it'd make little sense to back up corrupt files after all.

Which in the end is much simpler for the devs when they don't have to push updates to non-Steam and Steam customers separately.

There's a sticky right here in this exact subforum telling you NOT to use Steam to verify your game. This is because Steam DOES NOT PATCH THE GAME. The game uses SOE's launcher to handle this. So of course the backup/verify tools will screw up your files - they aren't aware that the files are SUPPOSED to be different from what Steam has in their system.

And why doesn't the game use Steam for patches? Because Valve are ridiculously slow at proofing and seeding patches for game. You can wait up to several days in some cases. This does not work in an MMO enviroment.

TLDR: OP can't be bothered to read.

*ignores entire post - repeats flawed argument*

Again - this is an issue on Steam's end of things, not SOE. If you have to continue whining over this non-issue go there. You can backup the game just fine by copying the game folder.

Other MMOs on steam do it fine. Are you a moderator???
  9. Mansen

    No they do not.
  10. Raveo

Yes they do. I own Eve Online. It backs up fine.
I own LOTRO. It backs up fine
I own Forsaken World. It backs up fine
I own Vindictus. It backs up fine....

Do you see where im going with this???

I own Planetside 2. It deletes its self and forces me to redownload.
I own DCUO. It deletes its self and forces me to redownload.

    stop being stupid.

Sorry. Should have said "Small download limit." Anywhere between 50GB and 100GB is pretty standard for Australia. Once you go over that you are reduced to a download speed of 256KB/S
  13. Mansen

And again - not they do not delete themselves. This is entirely Steam's way of handling any content that isn't in their checksums. Your mentioned MMO's are only "fine" if the last changes they have sent to Steam have actually been authorized and seeded - otherwise the same thing will happen.

Is PS2 behind in terms of their Steam checksum? Yes
    Is this a problem? No
Can I backup the game and verify it without using Steam's tools? Most certainly yes.

I use steam because I like having all my game links in one place. However I'd never try, nor recommend, managing the actual game via steam. It doesn't seem like a good idea for any mmo as they regularly receive patches and updates.
  15. Yian

And by which logic is this SOE's problem and not Steam's? Have you asked either one of them, or are you simply jumping into conclusions?
  16. Dubious

another reason NOT to use Steam
Just the name is enough to avoid it..
  17. Mansen

Well it IS SOE's fault for not providing any new updates to the Steam system. But it is entirely Steam's fault for not providing a fast and reliable method for delivering new updates via Steam. It's no wonder that most MMOs on Steam don't rely on the system when Steam can take up to three days to deliver a patch (Sent in on friday, not authorized and seeded till Monday).
  18. Yian

But even then, Steam could simply update their client and remove integrity verifications when backing up something like this. If their integrity checks are known to be bogus anyways after a single update, simply throw out an error or a message to the user that the validity of the backed up files can't be confirmed, and it'd just back it up blindly.
  19. Mansen

True enough - they could add an override for games where the developers specifically request not to have the tools available.

Get better internet :p i can download all i want all day and all night. and if i **** it up, i can redownload it. the only cost is time i need to spend playing some other game.

Just coz you use STEAM to play an SOE game, does not mean STEAM supports it.

If you play SOE game, you use SOE laucher...

Steam only give you a server to download the game from, and install it ot begin with.

Dont blame SOE, for somthing STEAM is doing wrong. Just coz some other games are working, does not mean they ALL do.
