The Problem: Turrets are very easy to destroy. Because they are stationary. SoE has so far attempted to mitigate the ease (and efficiency) of attacking by introducing timers. Timers are boring. The Solution: Give every turret a short rail so it can at least try to dodge incoming fire. For example the turrets along the walls of amp stations have some room for rails. Doesn't have to be fast. Just enough to dodge long range fire. This should increase the time it takes to capture a defended base. The boring timers can then be removed/reduced. (You can also increase the ease of defending by adding more sequential objectives, but that's for a different thread.)
I sort of think they just need to be beffier, or let an engineer upgrade them a la the combat engineer of planetside 1.
Another possibility this brings is for people to purchase turrets (just like vehicles) at turret terminals, which can then slide around the bases. (Some longer rails would be suitable for this though. Allowing you to slide all the way around the base for example.) You could then introduce turret types or turret weapons which can be unlocked like vehicle weapons. When you spawn a turret, it's your turret. This would make defence a bit more interesting.
Well, that would help. But I fear it would just make destroying turrets more boring. They'd still just get sniped by engineer turrets, tanks or high altitude liberators.
Awww and here i thought the post was for letting turrets set up on a rail rather than shoot into it.....
Rails sound neat but I don't think it's needed. What's necesary is for turrets not to stick out as if they were designed not to be defensible. Walls should be a bit more fortified in general to. Engineers tending to turret repair should be relatively safe from outside fire. Walls should be a serious hurdle for attackers to overcome, the turrets should fall only to overwhelming fire or when the engineer(s) supporting them are taken out as infantry advances to take the walls. Right now the walls and turrets are just a minor nuisance.
Engineer turrets can't be placed behind rails or windows or low walls because they will just shoot directly into them instead of over them.
The fix I've always wanted - Have overhead cover for the Ground turrets so that air can't get to them easily, only enemy ground. The turret can't aim very high and gets no benefit from seeing the sky, so why expose them? Same for AA turrets, set them back further so that ground can't fire on them easily, only enemy air. Why we expose turrets to threats that they can't effectively fight doesn't make for a very realistic setup. And if we could shield them from unnecessary risk, they'll be a viable solution for longer durations of the fight. No big changes to the fundamental game, just some well placed shielding... problem solved.
Increase the Armor Increase the speed of the projectile Increase the damage of the projectile It would be nice if players could upgrade the turrets and or the projectile as well. or give them a secondary fly by wire rocket.
I can imagine the cries of engies and tank gunners now. "TURRET ADADADAD SPAM OP!" I think it would be more useful to have turrets be able to back into the tower, rather then move left and right.
