True, the problem is the market. Every time I give advice to people playing CoD or Halo (enter name here) I share with them information that I spent time gathering (and I don't even play those games anymore). Information that I, with the help of a few (namely one) friends, figured out to better understand the game. Like how halo for console has 2 forms of auto-aim for weapons that do instant headshot kills, or to use other weapons to understand their strengths and weaknesses (not complex stuff here). Many (I dare say most) people just do not want to bother trying to be good and almost (I dare say do) expect to be good/horrible right away.

People get killed, many times a lot, and we all know how frustrating that can be. They then either think they have no chance because they suck so much, or they go the other way and think the game is broken because they are not doing well. It seems only the rare human being (or atleast I hope most of them are human) thinks that perhaps learning how things happen in the game would increase the end result, fun. Not trying to flatter, but given the amount of comprehensive help/info videos I've seen, most of the minority might well be playing PS2.

Side note: you can add tactics and strategy to a RTS, but it is kinda hard to limit yourself and deploy said strategy. I like the total war games, but my pc is not up to snuff so I will have shogun 2 and rome 2 to play (AI needed some smarts with empire, but was very good with barbarian invasion if I remember correctly)

I liked hearts of iron, but the game (for me atleast) had this horrible memory leak. It would slow down and then crash. Then I tried to get the patch, patch said it could not instal. Attempted to repair with disk and that did not work. Then I go to uninstal and it just about does nothing for an hour, so I still have a few Mb of files that refuse to be removed.... great game, just needs to do what I tell it to (work and die, that is all I ask).

*Edit* Ahh, above poster has a good point that I forgot about. The reward/punisment is a powerful tool and should not be underestimated.

Just like a CoD player to only read the title and ignore the actual content of the post, which incidentally had nothing to do with vehicle vs. infantry balance.

Read the entire thread and this is whats funny.

Soe is actively enticing cod players into ps2 to farm them of their money then over time when the initial development cost is met the devs can start making ps2 more like ps1 with non braindead gameplay.

Until then get your killstreak on and enjoy the fotm weapons.

First I gotta just say, not all bad players are bad because CoD or WoW ruined them. Some are used to other types of games, but not use to shooters (or in my case, out of practice). I think what the title and much of the content of this thread implies or states is that:

A- CoD makes players lazy and lacks the challenge to encourage improvement.
B- Lazy unchallenged players play poorly
C- Poor playing is "ruining" the game

Who f'in cares if someone is bad at a f'in video game. If your game is ruined because someone else isn't a good player...god I don't even know what that says about you...

Good read, I had a bit of a chuckle at

“The training wheels have come off, I’m gonna fall!”
    :p

I don't think CoD itself is the problem, it's the sheer number of games that copy it! Same deal with WoW really.

BF3 and PS2 copy CoD too much, far too much, but BF3 has been very successful and PS2 relatively so, and both also have slight innovation, I think developers have given too much credit to the bits they copied from CoD and not enough to their own innovations, so it's either a big step in the wrong direction, or the right direction, depending on whether they choose to believe the innovations of their game are what made is succeed, or their copycat tactics...

Hope for the former and perhaps games like Planetside will come out again...

Success like that is only good for the company. Not for the gamers. Also it's already been done. Any game that tries to copy WoW or CoD's dumbed down mechanics will be seen as clones and criticized for it. It especially doesn't do anything good for mmos to copy WoW because why would anyone that wants to play a game like WoW want to play a copy that has less content? Hint: They won't. That's why there's only 1 successful WoW clone that hasn't been dumbed down to a failed F2P version of its previous self and still never got near the same subscribers as WoW. New games need new mechanics. Dumbing down to overly easy crap like WoW and CoD will only see a large amount of early that quickly bleed out because the game quickly gets boring and a extremely little amount of long term players.

Betcha gotta watch you're step in a game called "Call of Doody"
  8. SgtBreastroker

CoD players provide more competitiveness to games. You can't deny that.
  9. Tasogie

Success is not a measure of how much money it makes, because with that pile of crap cod your dealing with a young playerbase who will shell out for anything shiny, an keep shelling out. So the money rolls in.
Take real FPS games like Tribes 1 an 2, Far to fast an difficult for them today an both games would fail dismally today. You only have to looka t the currant (I hesitate to call it tribes), because it is all COD clone, chainguns an shotguns for christs sake lol...

None of em would know a MA, or a HO run if their lives depended on it, but because its got shinys they will blissfully pay out an keep farming. Not to mention it was slowed down dramatically for todays audience.

If you can beat last level of quake arena on nightmare setting, only then will i believe your good at FPS. That's how i did my training way back when. Then play some Mohaa realism mod and become good with German kar rifle.

Games are just to easy these days. How many you kiddo's could beat Contra no cheats?

@OP awesome read, of course you can't agree with all the points, but he does make pretty good ones.

One thing the article didn't talk about is the much smaller group of "hardcore realism fps players". These guys are a MUCH smaller playerbase (found in BF series, ARMA, COD series, and now Planetside series), that generally HATE people who don't play the game like a military simulator.

I'm only bringing this demographic of players up because they are quite "vocal" in the PS2 community (just post a k/d ratio screenshot, you'll know what a I mean). For all the oldies out there (Pre-steam CS/Half Life/Firearms/DoD, Unreal torunament) will all agree that games back then were HEAVILY focused on k/d. CoD is no different, it just sorta dumb down the level of skill required to learn and play it. Which IMO is not a BAD thing.

Lets be honest, if you are new to shooters, or a player coming from console shooters, try playing competitive in CS:GO and you would get destroyed by even the "worst players". That is a big turn off to new players. I hate CoD as much as every other true PC FPS player, but I can still respect CoD for its friendliness to new generation gamers.

    CoD is to FPS as:
    McDonalds is to actual food
Reality TV is to actual programming
Pop music is to real music

In short: popular does not mean something is good and quite often it means the exact opposite.
The problem lies in the fact that popular means that it will be profitable.

Let me first say, lets not bash CoD in general. I personally liked it up through MW1. This is because the devs left modding and mapping open to the public and it turned out some really great mods that are a TON of fun and I still play this day. That said, MW1's skill level was fairly dumbed down and the series got further watered down with every proceeding sequel.

I personally remember playing Halo 2 a lot when it came out and then trying to go play CS with friends who played that almost exclusively. MAN did I SUCK and it took me MONTHS just to get ok. Took me almost a year after that to even get good.

CoD is made to advertise to little kids (ironically since it's rated "M", great going terrible parents) with little to no actual ability and only play console games. The reality is that good FPS gamers live in the older games where you just had the gun in your hand and no mines, RC vehicles, NPC air support, TTK's were 2-3 seconds (unless you got only headshots), and took years to master.

I still end up playing a zombie mod for the stand alone Quake mod Urban Terror because it's a great game that takes a LOT of skill to play well (thanks to no stamina limit and wall jumping).

P.S. Remember the time when the ONLY ADS you had was the scope for a sniper rifle? AH the good old days.

Anything the makers of killing floor says is probably going to get my respect....

I have a hundred hours of nothing but hipfiring the scar, single shots, in full auto on the fire selector.....
    I love it.
It doesn't get booring learning to headshot crowds of enemies one at a time in a way ohh so almost impossible (Albiet, I have retired from HOE lately..... Due to PUG quality declining.)

There are no CODs here. They don't like Tactical First Person Shooter.
  16. Spartan 117

Amen man. Killing Floor may not have nice graphics or gameplay but one thing it does have that no other game does is a real f*cking challenge. You play on hardcore/living hell mode 1 mistake & your whole team is dead. Hell, anytime a flesh pounder comes on screen your chances of survival drop to about 10% unless you have one hell of a marksman or the entire ground is littered with C4.
  17. WalrusJones

No kidding, my last game: 800 Kills, couldn't carry my team.

The fact that the game is so hardcore that a single man cannot carry an entire team shows it has SERIOUS balls.
  18. Pruto

The funny thing is these groups are usually worse at the game than the general population. The only big exception is Arma of course, where there are some really serious and interesting groups shepherded by actual vets. The rest are just fodder, strict squad tactics and directions won't save you from the troll LA that drops down and pump shotguns half you squad if none of your people have good aim.

I can tell you now trying to be like CoD ****** over the RO franchise hard. Old players didn't understand WTF was going on with all the arcade changes and unrealistic use of mass produced assault rifles (ww2 was not not about running and gunning with assault rifles), and new players didn't like playing a game that was even half realistic.
